Last July 22 2019, the president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Roa Duterte, delivered his fourth state of the
nation address. Even though I was not able to watch the whole event live, online articles and online
videos helped me understand what our president had said during the event. For what I have read, he was
able to tell the Filipinos the accomplishments he has done and also the incoming plans he has for the
betterment of our country. As a student, the issues addressed in the speech that are very relevant
nowadays really did contribute to the promised ‘transparency’ and helped me understand more deeply the
problems and happenings that our country is facing right now. It helped me, and I hope all other students,
in reflecting as to how and what I can do, as a student, to help address those issues. “I have identified the
enemy who bumped us into this quagmire we are in. I have met the enemy face to face, and sadly the
enemy is us. We are our own tormentors, addressing the Filipino people. We are our own demons”
because of that statement, I have realized that I shouldn’t always be blaming Duterte for the slow
development in the country. No matter how passionate and determined a leader is in creating a huge
change, nothing will happen if the people won’t cooperate. He tells the Land Transportation office, Social
Security System, Bureu of Internal Revenue, Land Registration Authority, and Pag-IBIG to improve their
services as data from the complaint center under his office show they were subject of many complaints.
He wants processing of permits to last only 3 days. It’s great to make the service better or more organized
and to avoid the hassle. He successfully addressed the most prevalent issues nowadays in the Philippines.
First is the corruption, I am more than happy that the president is doing his best and all he can to fight
government thieves. I truly believe that our economy would flourish if not for the selfish government
officials who take advantage of their power. Second are the issues with our overseas Filipino Workers or
OFW. He pledged to protect the rights of our new heros and I think that is what they deserve for their
contribution to our economy and also for being brave to leave their homes just to earn for their family.
Lastly, I am delighted to what he have done about our gem, Boracay. I just hope for the consistency and
for people to cooperate in maintaining the beauty of Boracay. I also am rooting for the rehabilitation of
Manila Bay. I have faith in the system, that the government will bring back the forgotten beauty of
Manila's sunset paradise. "Believe me, I will end my term fighting," that line somewhat ignited a light
through the darkness our country is facing right now. For me, he managed to feed people a little hope that
everything will be alright in his hands.
