CLASS – XI PHYSICS GRAVITATION

1. At which place on earth's surface, the value of g is largest. why?

2. When dropped from the same height a body reaches the ground quicker at poles than at the
equator. Why?
3. If spheres of same material and same radius r are touching each other, then show that the
gravitational force between them is directly proportional to r4.
4. If radius of earth is 6400km, what will be the weight of 1 quintal body taken to the height of
1600 km above sea level?
5. Find an expression for the loss in weight of a body when the body is taken to a height h above
the surface of earth and h <<R.
6. A body is taken to a depth of 450m below the earth's surface where it experiences an
acceleration due to gravity given by g'. By what distance should the body be raised above the
earth's surface for it to experience the same value of g .
7. The earth's mass is 80 times that of moon and their diameters are in the ratio 4:1 respectively.
What is the value of g on moon? Given that value if g on earth is 9.8m/s 2.
8. Compare the electrostatic force of attraction b/w an electron and a proton with the gravitation
force of attraction between them, when held at the same distance d .
9. Six point masses of mass m each are at the vertices of a regular hexagon of side l. Calculate the
force on any of the masses.
10.
A satellite is to be placed in equatorial geostationary orbit around earth for communication. (a)
Calculate height of such a satellite. (b) Find out the minimum number of satellites that are needed
to cover entire earth so that at least one satellites is visible from any point on the equator .
( M = 6 × 1024 kg, R = 6400 km, T = 24h, G = 6.67 × 10–11Nm2KG-2)
