    Install Windows Server (2008 R2)

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES

    After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:

    1. Install Windows Server OS

    Windows Server 2008 Requirements and Editions

    Components Requirements
    Processor Minimum: 1Ghz (x86 processor) or
    1.4 Ghz (x64 processor)
    Note; An Itanium 2 processor is
    required for Windows Server 2008
    for Itanium-Based Systems
    Memory Minimum: 512MB RAM
    Recommended: 2GB RAM
    Available Disk Space Minimum 10GB
    Recommended: 40GB or higher
    Note computers with more than
    16GB of RAM will require more disk
    space for paging, hibernation, and
    dump files.
    Others DVD-ROM drive
    SUPER VGA (800x600) or higher
    resolution for monitors.

    The bare metal Installation

    What do we mean by “bare metal”?


    Two types of Server 2008 installations:

    a. Bare Metal - No existing operating system on the HDD


    b. Upgrade - Installing over Server 2008 R2 (or another operating system) is
    installer on the HDD

    Bare Metal is the simplest installation possible (recommended by Microsoft as the
    preferred method)

    STEP IN INSTALLING WINDOWS SERVER R2 (BARE METAL/CLEAN INSTALL)

    1. After booting up from your install disk, you will arrive at a language and
    preferences screen. Once you have chosen those options, you get to the
    Operating System Selection page. Depending on your license and the purpose
    of your server, there are a variety of options to choose from. For our purpose
    today, we are going to choose the Standard (Full Installation) version.

    3. Since we’re doing a base install and not an upgrade, so we choose the Custom
    (advanced) option.

    5. We’ve got a blank 500 GB disk, so we’re just going to install it there. If you
    want to create a partition out of the available drive space or reformat a drive,
    then choose Drive options (advanced).

    6. Windows will take a little while with your install and reboot a few times.

    7. Once the install is finished, we’re prompted to change our password before
    logging in.

    8. Windows requires that you have a strong password, seven characters long
    with at least three of the four following: uppercase letter, lowercase letter,

    numeral, or symbol. You’ll want to make sure you write it down somewhere
    for now, because if you forget it later, the entire install will have to be re-done.
