Music and Human have always existed side by side. In our history, primitive forms of
flute can be found. Music, which is among man’s initial cultural expressions,
appeared before agriculture or writing and is present in all societies in the world in
various formats and social functions, to follow a religious ritual or simply to break a
lonely worker’s silence.
We will recall in a simple way some of the recording technologies developed in the
last century, and how they have influenced the creation of new musical forms. We
will also see how the most recent advances and the development have modified
creative possibilities, and how industry’s mass-produced music affects diversity.
Until very recent time, hearing music required the presence of performing musicians.
Throughout history, expansion wars, commercial routes, and religious impositions
opened paths for cultural exchanges of all kinds, including musical.
The way people experiences music started to change after the radio and the record
were invented, since they made it possible to distribute and listen to pre-recorded
sounds. Finally, the world filled with digitization and its rapid development.
Sri Lankan Music Industry is known for the traditional music and its rich values.
Change is inevitable and it’s applicable to music as well. Sri Lanka could not restrict
the music to those traditional movements. Therefore, it started to change by taking
different approaches throughout history. Today, Sri Lankan music is defined as a
mixture of all those approaches. First came the Gramophone Era where. It was used
by high class people since it has been introduced by British. Next came the Sri
Lankan Broadcasting Corporation and took the limelight of Sri Lankan music arena. It
was formerly known as Radio Ceylon. It has been the home for most of the well-
known musicians. It made a new trend in country’s music culture with its unique
programs. Cassettes became the next big step in this music evolution. Sri Lankan
band music became immensely famous with the installation of cassettes. Later came
the Compact Discs, Video Compact Discs and Digital Video Discs. They were
embraced by the millennial. Music being stored in these storage devices is still can be
seen in the market. Present day, Youtube runs the music industry. Every music
creation coms out with a music video now. At least a lyric video is there when it
comes to Youtube. Music is rather commercialized than giving true art to the world
with this platform.
