Important Hydraulic Structures

Hydraulic structure
-is a structure submerged or partially submerged in any body of water, which
disrupts the natural flow of water.

1. Dam
-is a hydraulic structure contructed across a river or a natural stream to
collect water or for storage of water which can evenly distributed between
locations.

Purpose of Dam
-Flood Mitigation
-Irrigation
-Water Supply
-Navigation
-Fishery and wild life Preservation
-Hydro-electric Power Generation
-Recreation

2. Weirs
- is a barrier across a river designed to alter its flow characteristics.

Purpose of Weir
-Measure the discharge to prevent flooding
-To provide steady and smooth flow of water

3. Barrage
-is a type of low-head, diversion dam which consists of a number of large
gates that can be opened or closed to control the amount of water.

Purpose of Barrage
-Diverting into canals for irrigating fields
-Electricity production at lower level

4. Bridge
-is a structure built to span physical obstacles such as a body of water, valley,
or road, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle.

Purpose of Bridge
-Pedestrian footbridge
-Water and Vehicular Transportation
5. Culvert
-is a structure that allows water to flow under road, railroad, trail or similar
obstruction.

Purposes of Culvert
-To convey water from one area to another
-To form a bridge-like structure to carry traffic

6. Sluice Gate
-is a mechanism used to cut off or obstruct the passage of a fluid. 3 main
parts: gate, frame and power mechanism.

Purpose of Sluice Gate

-Irrigation channels
-Sewage Treatment Stations
-Drinking Water Treatment Stations
Sewers and reservoirs

7. Aqueduct
-is watercourse constructed to convey water. It is used for any system of
pipes, ditches, canals, tunnels and other structures.

Purpose of Aqueduct
-Supply drinking water
-Irrigation of croplands
-Help drought prone areas with water supplies
-Control flood
Types of Culverts
1. Pipe Single or Mutiple
2. Pipe Arch Single or Multiple
3. Box Culvert Single or Multiple
4. Bridge Culvert
5. Arch Culvert

Classification as per function and use

1. Storage dam -to store excess flood water which can be utilized later when
demand exceeds the flow in river. Purposes: irrigation, water supply, hydro-
power generation and others.
2. Detention dam -to control flood. It stores water temporarily and release it
gradually at a safe rate when the flood recedes.
3. Diversion dam -to divert the river water into canal, conduits etc.

Classification as per hydraulic design

1. Overflow dam -to allow the overflow of surplus discharge above the top of it.
2. Non-overflow dam -the water is not allowed to overtop the dam. The top of
the dam is fixed at a higher elevation than the expected maximum flood level.

Classification as per structural design

1. Gravity Dam -solid concrete or masonry dam that all external forces are
resisted by its own weight or gravity forces.
2. Arch Dam -curved masonry of concrete dam has convex portion facing
upstream.
3. Buttress Dam -consists of sloping membrane or deck on upstream which is
supported by number of buttress or piers.
4. Embankment Dam -constructed of locally available soils, gravels and sands,
which resist all external forces by its shear strength. It is more suitable up to
moderate height. Ex. Earth Dam and Rock-fill Dam.
