The Relationship between Civil Engineering and Environmental Science
The Philippines is in the progressive state in terms of economy development. Civil

Engineers have a major role to play in the development of a nation as they have to make the
necessary infrastructures. They help plan dams and leaves to regulate water flow through the
area. They even coordinate with the placement and the design of landfills and quarries to
minimize environmental impact on surrounding homes and businesses. It aims to solve
environmental issues such as coastal protection, air pollution and waste treatment. For the last
four decades, global warming, ozone layer depletion, acid rain, deforestation, and desertification-
problems perceived as the major threats to the life supporting environment of this earth, thus
making our survival on the planet increasingly unsafe. Environmental sciences is an
interdisciplinary academic field that takes physical, biological and chemical sciences to study the
structure and function of our life-supporting environment and to understand causes and effects
and discover solution to environmental problems. It involves different fields of study such as
study of climate change, natural resources, energy, pollution, and environmental issues. Civil
engineering and environmental sciences have an important interaction with each other, therefore,
we need them both for our country to be in the state of progression but still considering the
environmental concerns.
Civil engineers hold the responsibility of constructing and designing buildings, highways,
bridges, mass transit systems, dams and locks, and municipal water and sewage treatment
systems, which are necessary infrastructures for the development of the society. As a result, civil
engineering is popularly known as “the people serving profession”. Environmental engineers on
the other hand create ways to solve environmental issues. Moreover, their responsibilities are: to
collect, analyze air, water and soil samples as well as to monitor compliance with environmental
laws and regulations. Lastly, their job is to address public meetings on local environmental
challenges. Civil engineering and environmental science are fields that contributes in the
economy. The both can qualify individuals to work in various roles that deal with issues at the

intersection of the man-made and natural worlds. Additionally, the two are concerned with the
natural environment and its relationship with the human world. They focus on data gathered
from the natural environment, particularly on the past and future effects of human activity and its
impact, in order to device and implement solutions to a variety of issues.
Civil Engineering is concerned about sustainability and helping people connect with the
natural world. Specializations in Civil Engineering like Water Resources, Environment,
Structural and Construction, Geotechnical, Transportation, and Sustainability are useful in
studying Environmental Science as a discipline wherein engineering is combined Physics,
Biology, Chemistry, and Earth Science to study the environment and its affiliated problems.
Civil and Environmental Engineers on the other hand could work together through cross-
reference. Environmental engineers could teach civil engineers to create or build infrastructures
that will not only help the economy or the society but become a good thing for the sustainability
of the environment.
Civil Engineers are the ones who are responsible for all the infrastructures that are very
useful as of todays’ generation. It aims to solve environmental issues such as global warming,
ozone layer depletion, acid rain, deforestation and desertification problems, but for the last forty
years surviving in these planet became unsafe. Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary
academic field that talks physical, biological and chemical sciences to study the structure and
function of our life-supporting environment and to understand the causes and effects and
discover solutions to environmental problems. Thus, we conclude that Civil engineers and
Environmental Science is what we need to save not only the environment but also for our
country to progress.
