Rally Scoring Is The Official Scoring For Badminton! Scoring System

Badminton rules outline scoring and serving for both doubles and singles play. A match is played to 21 points with rally scoring, where each successful return of serve earns a point. In doubles, only one partner on each side can score per rally and servers alternate between right and left service courts depending on the score. In singles, servers also alternate sides depending on the score. All serves must be below the waist without an overhead strike. Players determine initial serve through a coin flip.

Badminton Rules (doubles and singles)

**All games are played to 21 points — win by 2!

**Rally Scoring is the official scoring for badminton!
Scoring System
A match consists of single game of 21 points.
Every time there is a serve – there is a point scored.
The side winning a rally adds a point to its score.
Doubles:
(follow rules for “Scoring System”)
1) Each side has only one “set” – only one partner has a chance to score points.
2) At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the
right service court. When it is odd, the server serves from the left court.
If the serving side wins a rally, the serving side scores a point and the same server
serves again from the alternate service court.
If the receiving side wins a rally, the receiving side scores a point. The receiving side
becomes the new serving side.
The players do not change their respective service courts until they win a point when
their side is serving.
Singles:
(follow rules for “Scoring System”)
1) At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the
right service court. When it is odd, the server serves from the left court.
2) If the receiving side wins a rally, the receiving side scores a point. The receiving side
becomes the new serving side.
3) The players do not change their respective service courts until they win a point when
their side is serving.
Hits/Etiquette:
1) All serves must be below the waist, and the racket head must be below the
wrist — NO OVERHEAD SERVES!!!
2) To determine the serve at the beginning of the game, flip the birdie. Whoever it
points to may choose serve or side. If they choose to serve or not to serve, their
opponent may choose the preferred side and vice versa.
3) Please go over lines before the game begins so that both you and your opponent
are familiar with the differences between serving lines in doubles and singles.
4) Have fun!
