I am Iris, goddess of the rainbow, the messenger of the Olympian gods.

I was often represented as the

handmaiden and personal messenger of Hera. I was a goddess of sea and sky, my father Thaumas the
wondrous was a marine-god. My mother Elektra the amber was a cloud-nymph. The cruel and fearsome
harpies were my sisters. For the coastal-dwelling Greeks, the rainbows are most often seen spanning the
distance between cloud and sea.

I served as a messenger from mount Olympus. I used a path of rainbows to deliver messages. I restore the peace
in nature after strong storms, and supplies water to the clouds. I used pitcher to scoop up water from the
ocean and carry it into the clouds. I travel with the speed of light from one end of the world to the other and
down into the depths of the sea and underworld. I’m one of the few Olympian gods that are allowed to travel
to the underworld. I have no specific myths or temples, but I was normally pictured on vases as a glorious
woman with golden wings, holding a water pitcher and a herald’s rod.

I carry messages from Ida to Olympus, from gods to gods, and from gods to men. I am very trustworthy and
important. Without me, messages may not be received safely securely. If there was a different messenger, he
or she could invade the sender/ receiver’s privacy by reading the message.

For those of you who don’t know Hermes is another immortal messenger. Both of us are able to travel to the
underworld. The differences is that I was a personal messenger for Hera and sometimes Zues, and Hermes is
also somewhat of a thief.

I travel with the speed of light from one end of the world to the other and down into the depths of the sea and
underworld.
