Assignment ENT 115 – Bipolar Junction Transistor

Answer all questions

(1) Consider the BJT circuit in Figure 1. Assume that the following values remain constant during
the operating conditions,  DC = 100 and VBE = 0.65V,
(a) Calculate:
i. Base, collector and emitter currents [15 Marks]
ii. VCE and VCB [10 Marks]
iii. DC alpha,  DC [ 5 Marks]
(b) Determine whether the transistor is operating under cut-off, linear or saturation condition
if base current is increased to 0.9 mA. Assume VCE(sat) = 0.2V. [30 Marks]
(c) If a 2N3904 transistor is used and the circuit is operating at the temperature of 75 oC .
Referring to the data sheet in Appendix 1 and the circuit operating with the base current
and VCE(sat) as in part (b),
i. Determine the power rating of the transistor at the given operating temperature.

ii. Determine the maximum value to which VCC can be adjusted without exceeding a
rating. Which rating would be exceeded first? [35 Marks]

(2) Consider the common-collector BJT amplifier in Figure 2. Assume that the following
values remain constant during the operating conditions,  DC = 100,  ac = 120 and VBE =
0.7V,
(a) Draw DC and AC equivalent circuit for the circuit. [25 Marks]
(b) Calculate the voltage gain for the amplifier without the load. [30 Marks]
(c) Calculate the total input resistance, Rin(tot) [20 Marks]
(d) Calculate the DC and AC output voltages. [15 Marks]

(e) Calculate the voltage gain for the amplifier with the load. [10 Marks]

(3) Consider the BJT circuit as in Figure 3(a).

(a) Describe the condition when a pnp BJT transistor operates in saturation condition and what
are the terminal currents and voltages conditions during saturation.

(b) The output (collector voltage) of a biased transistor amplifier is shown in Figure 3(b). Is the
transistor biased too close to cut-off point or too close to saturation? Justify your answer.

(c) If RC = 300Ω, RB = 10kΩ, VBB = 3V, VCC = 15V,  DC = 100 and VBE = 0.6V, determine the
values of:
(i) Base voltage, VB [5 Marks]
(ii) Base current, IB [5 Marks]
(iii) Collector current, IC [5 Marks]
(iv) Collector to emitter voltage, VCE [5 Marks]
(v) IC and VCE during cut-off [10 Marks]
(vi) IC and VCE during saturation [10 Marks]

(d) Based on the choice of VCC, RC and RB for the collector feedback bias circuit in Figure 3(a),
evaluate quality of the resultant Q-point. Draw the DC load line graph and use the graph to
justify your answer. [30 Marks]

(4) Consider the Common-Emitter amplifier circuit in Figure 4. Assume that the following values
remain constant during the operating conditions,  DC = 120,  ac = 100 and VBE = 0.7V,
