1.0 SCOPE
This specification covers the requirements for coatings for threaded fasteners in order to achieve
an overall corrosion resistance and to prevent nuts from freezing to the studs as a result of
corrosion.

2.0 GENERAL
Threaded fasteners shall be protected against corrosion by a duplex coating system comprising of
a metallic substratum and an organic top coating.
The metallic substratum shall be an aluminium layer applied by electrodeposit plating.
The top coating shall be a fluorcarbon based coating. Alternative metallic substrate can only be
applied after approval of Buyer.

3.0 GALVANO ALUMINIUM COATING

3.1 Surface Preparation

The basic metal shall be free of visible defects and contamination, which can be detrimental to the
adhesion, the protective value or the appearance of the plating. Oily substances shall be removed
with a suitable solvent (e.g. xylene toluene, trichlore compound etc.) Kerosene, diesel, turpentine
or other oily substances are not to be used.

3.2 Basic Material

The basic metal shall be subject to aqueous pre-treatment to minimise the occurrence of hydrogen
embrittlement.

3.3 Aluminium Plating

The aluminium plating shall be done by means of electrodeposition of pure aluminium. The
electrodeposited aluminium plating shall have an absolute minimum thickness of 6 microns and a
maximum of 10 microns.
The thickness shall be measure in accordance with DIN 50981 – magnetic thickness methods for
measuring nonferromagnetic coatings on ferromagnetic materials.
Holes, recesses, internal threads and other areas where the thickness cannot accurately be measured
shall be covered such that the basic material is not visible.

Specification 524, Rev. 4 Sheet 3 of 4

4.0 TOP COATING

4.1 Surface Preparation

The substructure surfaces shall be free from defects and contamination (oil, grease, detergent, blast
media etc.). In order to ensure good adhesion and freedom of dry film defects.

4.2 Top Coating

The top coating shall be a tough fluorcarbon based coating with good weathering properties and
low friction coefficient. The operating temperature shall range from –7 to 275 degrees centigrade.
The thickness of the coating shall be 15-25 microns minimum and shall allow smooth running of
fastener threads. The appearance shall be a smooth satin finish. The colour shall be yellow RAL
1033.

4.3 Application
The coating application and curing shall be done according to the paint manufacturer’s
recommendations.

5.0 QUALITY CONTROL

Vendor shall submit and adhere to test procedures in accordance with the following standards.
DIN 50981 - Magnetic thickness methods of measuring nonferromagnetic coatings on
ferromagnetic material.
DIN 50982 - General testing methods for coated metals.
ASTM B117 - Salt spray testing

6.0 PACKAGING
Preservation, packaging and packaging methods shall be such as to preclude damaging during
shipment and handling. Each package shall clearly be marked with contents, shipping address and
purchase order number.
