TIME,t
1. The purpose of this experiment is to measure the acceleration of steel ball under
gravitational effect and the relationship between velocity, v against time, t the fall of
steel ball.
2. When Instantenous Velocity,v against Time,t Graph is plotted, the graph result is
scattered. Therefore trendline is made to take an average result which give a straight
line, whereby it is easier for the measurement to be taken which give a result of a
constant acceleration. The slope calculated is 10.375ms-2 (Manual Slope Calculation).
3. The second graph, Distance,h against Time Squared, t2 give quite a straight line which
make it easier to take a reading. The calculated slope of the graph is 3.12 (Manual
Slope Calculation).
4. The result is slightly different from theoretical value, which is 9.81 ms-2 . Perhaps there
are some errors occurred during the experiment as stated below:
Reading error when taking a measurement such as the distance is not accurate
from below the steel ball to the detection sensor. It is also called a parallax error.
During the experiment, we have encountered inaccurate reading from the
experiment digital counter (sensor detection). As for example, when taking a
reading time of fall for 0.1 meter, t1 reading is 0.180, t2 is 0.181 but t3 reading is
0.313, and the digital counter sometimes give false reading in other distance. This
is probably because of the malfunction of experiment digital counter due to the
age of device or interruption to sensor accuracy.
Environment error such as vibration during steel ball drop, magnetic field, humidity
or the interference of some object to the sensor can also affect the reading value.
Calculation error might be the problem affecting the reading. The figure below
shows the calculation between Excel Slope Calculation and Manual Slope
Calculation.
Excel
Formula
ESC
MSC
From the figure above it shows that the Ms Excel Slope Calculation(ESC) give more
accurate reading from Manual Slope Calculation (MSC), The ESC give closest reading
to theoretical value which 9.81ms-2 while MSC give slightly bigger value than ESC. It
proves that manual calculation , which is human error also affecting the result value.
From the experiment, we have identified how the gravitation acceleration value is
found. This experiment is successful because the percentage of error for G1 graph (h vs t2) is
5.76% for Manual Slope Calculation and 0.61% for Excel Slope Calculation, and for G2 graph
