ISM Code
part of two onboard courses
Safety officer On March 6th 1987, the Herald of Free Enterprise capsized and grounded, resulting in what is
Safety officer (old version) considered to be Britain’s largest maritime tragedy since the Titanic. This terrible accident and the
Safety, health and investigation that followed are seen as the driving force behind the ISM Code, which seeks to improve
environment ship management to reduce the number of accidents caused by human error.
It is estimated that a very high proportion of maritime accidents, about 80 to 90 percent, are attributable
to human error.
The aim of this module is to identify the main objectives of the ISM Code and outline the procedures
required to comply with SOLAS regulations, including the reporting requirements within a vessel’s
Safety Management System.
This module is also part of Seagull’s Safety, Health and Environment onboard training course and the
Safety Officer onboard training course.
