Horse Reports
Reports compiled on 14 October 2019
Half-sister to Juddmonte-owned dual winner, Ski Lift (rated 86). Canasta was purchased for
£50,000 at the Doncaster Breeze Up Sales in April 2018 and has won one race to date.
Report from James: it was good to see her pedigree was enhanced over the
weekend by Quadrilateral. She has been well since her win and will start working
again this weekend.
Race date: Thursday, 3 October
RACE REPORT: Canasta broke well and moved into Race: Grand Theatre Wolverhampton Handicap
second place, just off the rail, going into the first bend (Class 6), 1m1½f
under Jack Mitchell. Canasta travelled well down the Course: Wolverhampton (AWT)
back straight and ranged upsides the front-running Ground: Standard
Celtic Artisan turning into the straight. Canasta, the Weight: 9st 2lb
5/2 favourite, was driven to lead with a furlong and a Jockey: Jack Mitchell
half to run and ran on well to the line to finish 1¾ Finishing position: 1st of 11
lengths ahead of the runner-up, Better Than Ever. Gross prize money won: £2,781.67
After the race, James Fanshawe said he was delighted with the win, and hopes there could be
more to come from Canasta. James says Canasta looks much better physically than she did in
the spring, as she is so much stronger now. James also says Canasta is much more relaxed in
her races, which allowed her to be ridden much more prominently on this occasion; she also
appeared to stay this trip well, despite being ridden with less restraint than normal. James
hopes the handicapper is not too harsh on her, and he can find another winning opportunity
for Canasta this season.
Our View: The fact that Canasta settles better in the early stages of her races seems to be crucial,
as it allowed her jockey to sit more prominently through the race, before putting her stamina to good
use in the home straight. Canasta is clearly improving in confidence and we hope James can find a
similar opportunity for her in due course.

Report from Julie: Judicial is fresh and well. We have decided to target him for a
Listed race at Lingfield in mid-November over six furlongs. It will be a bit of an
experiment, but a nice rest awaits afterwards and he wouldn't run unless we were completely
happy with him. With the All-Weather Championships on Good Friday 2020, this will tell us if
the sprint final might be a viable early-season target for him next year.

Sixth foal out of Listed winner MARLINKA, and is a half-sister to JUDICIAL, MARSHA and
Loretta. DARK ANGEL is the sire of six individual Group 1 winners (including HARRY ANGEL,
BATTAASH and MECCA’S ANGEL), including four champion sprinters.
Report from Darrell Scaife: Lady Angela was lame on Friday morning on her near
[or left] hind. The vet was called and she did various tests, but was unable to
diagnose anything. She has remained on box rest over the weekend and has
improved. She will be checked again by the vet later this week.

RACE REPORT: Maurice Dancer raced keenly in his first-time cheek pieces, but travelled well
into the race. He was asked for an effort a furlong from home and briefly looked as though he
would make an impact, but he faded in the last 150 yards to finish ninth of the thirteen runners,
beaten just over four lengths by the winner, Holloa.
Our view: This was a disappointing effort from Maurice Dancer, who didn't see his race out after
racing keenly. Julie Camacho is hopeful that Maurice Dancer can continue to race for the time-being
as he still appears to be learning as he goes along.

Out of the prolific Shamwari Lodge, Shining Sea is a half-sister to the 12-race winner (including two
Listed races), OH THIS IS US. Shining Sea was bought for 100,000gns at Tattersalls yearling Sales in
October 2017. A tendon injury ended her racing career in July 2019 and she should join the Club’s
breeding programme later this year.
Report from Sir Mark: Shining Sea is doing a lot better and is now fit to travel.
She will hopefully head to EquiPrep shortly.
Report from James: We have been treating her for a dirty scope. Despite this
slight set back, she is well.

KEYHAVEN (2016) is turned out with another filly and they get on well. She has put on plenty
of weight over the last few months, but is still a small filly with limited scope.
MAgiSTRATE (2015) is enjoying the easy life and looks well, as you would imagine. He is
coming up for a year post-injury, so we will have a good look at him next month with the vet
and make a plan for him.
LOPE DE VEgA ex AFFiNiTY colt yearling The Lope De Vega yearling colt arrived from Star

is a charming and relaxed individual and we look forward to getting to know him better over
the next few weeks.

AFFiNiTY (2007) is well, despite the ongoing indifferent weather we are all experiencing at
the moment. It is interesting to note that after we moved the mares this week to a new
paddock, there has been a bit of fresh posturing within the group with a couple of the mares
trying to improve their position in the pecking order. Affinity remains firmly in the middle of
things and this seems to suit everyone.
LOPE DE VEgA ex AFFiNiTY colt yearling left for Equiprep on Thursday, 10 October. He showed
his quality by walking straight on to the horsebox, despite not having been near one before,
merely trusting that we weren't going to do him any harm and being happy to be led into
strange environment by ourselves.
KiND OF HUSH (2012) remains in good form with herself and we are pleased with her overall
looks and demeanour. She was excited to get her move on to fresh pasture, but interestingly,
was pretty quick to get her head down and avail herself of the grass on offer. She, along with
the others, has settled well and they all appear content and happy.
MADiSON (2015) is in great form with herself and could be seen leading the charge of the
mares when they were released into the new field. She is, of course, not as heavy as other
established mares, which gives her an advantage when the fun begins.
MARSEiLLE (2014) is also well and has appreciated moving paddocks and enjoyed exploring
the new boundaries placed in front of her. She continues to please us with her physical
appearance and should hopefully be in good shape when she attends the sales later in the
year.

SiSTiNE (2008) is in great form and is safely in foal. She is looking great! The farrier is happy
with her feet.
gLENEAgLES ex SiSTiNE colt foal (born 15/03/2019) is in good form. He is happy in his new
group and is thriving well. The weather has been very wet, so his group has been coming in for
a few hours to the loose barn for a dry lie down and a feed. He is a lovely forward type, and so
far has a good attitude.
FFESTiNiOg (1995 (RETiRED)) is well. She is getting her winter coat, and is carrying enough
condition for the winter ahead. She had her feet trimmed this week and they are in good shape.
HARMONiCA (2015) is big and well. Whilst Tribute Act has settled down, Harmonica is still a
livewire and gallops around at feed times. She is low in the feeding order and gets one of the
last bowls. She had her feet trimmed this week and stood nicely for the farrier.

DAVID FRANK’S
NOTEBOOk
Sir Michael Stoute has long been recognised as a trainer who can do very well with older horses,
and SEXTANT looks like one who will fit that particular bill next season. Owned by the Queen,
Sextant is a four-year-old gelding by Sea The Stars, out of a 12-winning dam who is a sister to
the Oaks runner-up Flight Of Fancy. The stamina in Sextant's pedigree was evident when he
stayed on to finish second in Ascot's Group 3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes. This was also Sextant's
best performance on soft ground to date, having raced mainly on good or quicker going, and
probably one of his best efforts to date full stop. Though beaten six lengths by the more
experienced Morando, that horse had winning form on soft ground at this level through his
victory in the Ormonde Stakes earlier this year, and was rated 4lb superior to Sextant. Sextant
has steadily improved this year, and could be a better horse in 2020.
Similar comments apply to the Cumberland Lodge-third ViViD DiAMOND, trained by Mark
Johnston. Though no match for the winner and second once headed, as one who has been
running well over further (he won the 1m 6f Listed Chester Stakes at the end of August), he
could be seen to better effect over 1m 6f or more. Also, as a three-year-old, he may reasonably
be expected to develop further over the winter and improve beyond his current official rating
of 106.
CAPE BYRON enhanced his already impressive record at Ascot when landing the Group 3
Bengough Stakes. Trained by Roger Varian, the five-year-old son of Shamardal has now won
three times from three starts at Ascot this season and has improved 10lb to a career-high of
113 over the course of the campaign. Having been progressing in handicaps, he won the
Wokingham at Royal Ascot and then possibly found himself a little outclassed when upped to
Group 1 level for the July Cup. He was then third in a 7f Group 2 at York, and victorious on this
latest start in a Group 3. Given his liking for Ascot, connections' reported interest in running
him back at the Berkshire course for the Champion Sprint is understandable and he would most
probably be of each-way interest.
The Ian Williams-trained zUBAYR made a fair return to action when switched back to hurdles
for a Class 2 handicap hurdle at Fontwell's recent Saturday meeting. Formerly trained by Paul
Nicholls, Zubayr was a smart juvenile hurdler, winning the Grade 2 Adonis Hurdle in 2016. He
didn't quite develop into a genuine Champion Hurdle prospect, but the following season won
the Scottish Champion Hurdle (a Class 2 limited handicap hurdle) and then finished a fair fifth
in the Grade 3 Swinton Hurdle at Haydock. There were some highlights the following season,
which included a Flat success in a Kempton maiden, but after a wind operation failed to elicit
obvious improvement on his next start, he switched to the stable of Ian Williams late last year.
Initially tried on the all-weather over the winter, Zubayr showed consistent form on his three
starts on the level, but was given a break and reappeared over hurdles with a bang, winning a
Class 2 handicap hurdle at Southwell in late June. Though that race wasn't the strongest, it was
Zubayr's first handicap hurdle win and his best effort over hurdles in more than a year. A run at
Glorious Goodwood followed, when he didn't have the clearest of runs, followed by a break
until his latest start at Fontwell. A late mistake cost him some momentum, but Zubayr wasn't
beaten far; he finished fourth, less than four lengths behind an in-form winner for whom this
was a third victory in a row. He has claims in similar races around the 2m 4f distance this season.

STALLION
U P D A T E
Further to the recent good news that all nine of our broodmares were confirmed in foal at the turn of this
month, we take a timely look at how their covering stallions' progeny has been performing on the
racecourse this season.
DANDY MAN'S stallion career has been developing nicely over the last 10 years, achieving higher
top-end prices at the yearling sales year-on-year, which has led to a steady stallion fee increase
over the same period. The former top-class sprinter covered Sistine on 21 April, a nomination which
will hopefully inject a little more speed and precocity into the resulting foal, compared her to
previous coverings. The highlights for Dandy Man's 2019 season include Lady Kaya's second in the
Group 1 1,000 Guineas and Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes runner-up Lord Of The Lodge, plus the Group
3 Fred Darling Stakes winner, Dandhu.
FARHH (covered Affinity 23 May) has enjoyed another fine season. This son of the champion sprinter
Pivotal was a top-class miler, and also won the 1m 2f Champion Stakes, but does have winners over
a range of distances. Though he hasn't had a Group 1 winner in 2019, Farhh's flag-bearer this season
has been the Mark Johnston-trained stayer, Dee Ex Bee, a dual Group 3 winner who has finished a
close runner-up to the mighty Stradivarius on three occasions. Richard Hannon came close to adding
a second 2,000 Guineas success to his record when King Of Change finished second in the Classic,
and another classy miler for Farhh was Willie Haggas' filly Move Swiftly, who won the Group 2 Duke
Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot, on her seasonal debut.
A major feather in the cap for any stallion is to sire a Classic winner, and LOPE DE VEgA (covered
Tribute Act 15 February) achieved that feat when Phoenix Of Spain won the Irish 2,000 Guineas
earlier this year. Lope De Vega's class was underlined when Zabeel Prince won the Group 1 Prix
d'Ispahan, and the progressive and prolific Duke Of Hazzard scored a hat trick in the late summer,
improving from Listed to Group 2 level in the process.
As a reliable producer of winners with some quality, putting MASTERCRAFTSMAN to Marseille
(covered 17 February) will hopefully enable our daughter of Marlinka to get her broodmare career
off to a great start. If 2019 has lacked an absolute top-class winner, such as Alpha Centauri, The
Grey Gatsby or Kingston Hill, Mastercraftsman has nevertheless been successfully represented on
the racecourse. Godolphin's Vintager won Group 3 and 2 races (1m) in France and Germany, while
Martyn Meade's Technician progressed through 2019 to become one of the most exciting staying
prospects for next season, winning the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes and the Group 2 Prix
Chaudenay.
Cheveley Park Stud's MAYSON may not have developed into the most illustrious of sires as yet, but
the former July Cup winner is getting speedy winners; so was a sensible choice for our unproven
mare, Roubles (covered 27 February), who is by the top-class dirt sprinter, Speightstown. Mayson's
leading progeny this season include Oxted, who was placed in a Listed race in the spring and last
month won the Portland Handicap at Doncaster's St Leger meeting.
The German-bred SEA THE MOON is a relatively new stallion, whose first two-year-olds only raced
last year. However, the German Derby winner's first two crops have included Group winners, such
as Jessica Harrington's smart juvenile filly, Alpine Star, winner of the Group 2 Debutante Stakes and
Mick Halford's Hamariyna, who won the Group 3 Irish 1,000 Guineas Trial at Leopardstown. Club
trainer James Fanshawe's Pondus won two novice stakes at the start of the season before
22
progressing to finish second in the Group 3 Rose Of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock. There's no Group
1 winner among Sea The Moon's progeny to race so far, but that should only be a matter of time.
SHOWCASiNg already had a few Group 1 winners to his name by the time his nomination to
Marlinka (covered 12 April) was confirmed, but the flow has continued this season, thanks to the
emergence of the Martyn Meade-trained Advertise as a top-class sprinter, winning the
Commonwealth Cup and Prix Maurice du Gheest. Soldier's Call ran well in defeat at 5f, placing third
and second in the Group 1 King's Stand Stakes and Nunthorpe Stakes, respectively. As a proven sire
of multiple Group 1 winners, hopefully the combination of Showcasing and Marlinka will prove
extremely fruitful!
An established stallion and top-class miler, TAMAYUz (covered Harmonica 20 February) was a
logical choice for our dual-winning miler, Harmonica, in her first covering season. While 2019 hasn't
brought the same breadth of black type winners as last season, Tamayuz enjoyed a red letter day
when Mustashry won the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes in May. Other notables include Desert Skyline
(third in the Ebor) and the Listed-class performers Mankib and Daarik.
One of the better progeny of Coolmore Stud's zOFFANY (covered Madison 27 February 2019) is
Fleeting, who hasn't actually won, but was placed three times at Group 1 level, in the English and
Irish Oaks and also the Ribblesdale at Royal Ascot. Also, Fleeting was recently denied outright victory
in the Group 1 Prix de l'Opera, beaten only by a short neck. Mark Johnston landed the Group 2
German 1,000 Guineas and Redcar's Listed Guisborough Stakes with Main Edition, but one to watch
out for next year could be Jessica Harrington's smart juvenile filly, Albigna; the winner of Group 1
Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp's Arc meeting.
