CHARISM
Introduction
1
The church is a congregation of people. ‘You are a chosen race, a royal
priesthood, a dedicated nation and a people claimed by God as his own” (1
Peter 2:9). Christ the son of the God established this church through the
mystical truth of his sufferings, death, resurrection and ascension. He purifies
and sanctifies it, to forever. In order to attain that sanctity some of its
members appear from time to time as the need arises, with their charisma and
objectives, being fully separated from among the world, they live a witnessing
life fully dedicated to God. In this manner, various religious bodies come into
being and decorate our Mother, the church, even today.
In 1947, Pop Pius xii in his encyclical “Provida Mater Ecclesia”
approved and recognized secular religious organizations. He pronounced that
it is one of the various means of achieving fullness of holiness. Secular
Institutes, though they are not religious orders, they openly accept the
evangelical counsels truly and wholly. Through accepting the Evangelical
counsels, those that lead family life as well as those that priestly life receive.
Living amidst the world, being clad in the dress as of the people in the
world and doing the work of those in the world, they build up the kingdom of
God while living within the world like the leaven in the dough – 2 (Marai Aruvi
1986) by their commitment they are able to do and complete the constructive
work of the church which could not have been achieved by the religious
orders, through in infiltrating into the society in various angles. Even before
the encyclical of Pope Pius XII there had been such religious bodies starting
from 1920 s. Inspired by the Holy Sprit the members of their bodies live in the
mission countries and the communist countries adapting themselves to the
social and political situations prevalent there. According to statistics prepared
by the commission for religious and secular institutions in 1984, there had
been more than 129 secular institutes in 28 countries at that time.
Referring to secular institutes the late Pope Paul VI has said that the
real nature of secularism in these institutes is deeply rooted in the Divine
Mystery “Christ became Man”. The Holy Father further explained that the
members of these institutes render to the whole Church. This divine mystery
by living it through their special call and life, help in building the Kingdom of
2
God and hold the total human development as their Gospel proclamation
(1972.02.02).
Thus, the whole church accepts the fact that the church secular
religious institutes have and important role to play in fulfilling the needs of the
church as suited to the present day.
On this basis, by the inspiration of the Holy Sprit, Rev. Father Louis
Marie Parent, OMI established two different institutes in the diocese of
Quebec, Canada one for the women in 1952 and the other for men in 1958
with the approval of Bishop Henri Routhier, OMI. These institutes began to
spread in various countries according to the plan of the founder. God so willed
that a right time came for Sri Lanka too for the dawning of this institute.
The church in Jaffna was replete with faith in God. They lived their life
of faith under the guidance of the Bishops and the Priests. It is no
exaggeration to say that it was the Catholic Schools that sustain the life of
faith of the people and children of Jaffna. After the taking over by the
Government of all the schools in 1960s, the catholic students were scattered.
The state of Christian Life and the catechetical studies were very much
questionable. In this situation the responsibility of the parents was very much
required. The laity contribution in all sectoral services of the church was felt as
the need of the hour. The concept that the church to grow in sanctity by over
coming her challenges not only religious institutes but also the secular
institutes should come into existence gathered momentum.
The late Rt. Rev. Dr. Emiliauspillai, the then Bishop of Jaffna, bearing
this concept in mind was very much desirous of a new dawn for the church in
Jaffna.
3
The Holy Father Pope John XXIII being desirous of bringing this new
dawn to birth through out the world, convened the famous General Chapter
called Vatican II and invited all the Bishops to participate in that chapter. The
then Bishop of Jaffna too complied with this. It was there that the Providence
of God so arranged the meeting between the Bishop Emil of Jaffna and Rev.
Fr. Louis Marie Parent OMI the founder of the Voluntas Dei Institute.
Rev. Fr. S.N. Gunaseelan was the Rector of St. Martins Seminary,
Jaffna. Master Rajaratnam and Master Stanislous who were I the age group
of 17-20 years and studying under the loving guidance of Fr. Gunaseelan
were identified and selected for priestly studies while Master Emmanual and
Master Guy de Fontgalland were selected to be celebrate men and Miss
Magdalene Sinnappu and Miss Daisy Gnanapragasam were selected to be
missionary oblates of Mary Immaculate.
These selected persons were dispatched to Canada the birth place of
Voluntas Dei Institute on 25 th July 1963. Rev. Fr. Michael Joseph took them to
4
Canada where he worked as a lecturere at the seminary of the Voluntas Dei
Institute. About two years later he returned to Sri Lanka.
Master Patric Gnanapragasam and Master Anton Peiris were
accommodated in the second batch for priestly studies in 1965. Later on the
latter left the Institute on his own.
Mention has to be made at this point about a very special man in the
diocese of Jaffna who is still actively involved in various activities with a youth
heart and an Apostolic Zeal. I those days he worked as secretary to Bishop
Emil and was well trained by the Bishop. As he was one who correctly
perceived the spiritual yearning and the fore-sightedness of the Bishop, he
became well aware of Rev. Fr. Louis Marie Parent Omi and his two secular
institutes newly established in Canada. He offered his side support to the
Bishop in hosting Fr. Parent in Sri Lanka and maintained close relationship
with him. He won the special love of Fr. Parent and took un tiresome efforts in
making necessary arrangements to send the trainers to Canada. He was the
one who prepared me too for my first vows in the Institute of Voluntas Dei by
preaching a homily and he is the one who is assisting us with a deep sense of
concern towards the growth and promotion of the Institute of Voluntas Dei
even today. He is none other than the great Rev. Fr. JPE Selvaraja whom we
owe our love and respect.
5
managing parishes and Institutions. At this time the Rosarian Brothers were
staying at St. Johns’ parish. They made the exposition of the Blessed
Sacrament and established a perpetual adoration to it. The interest and the
participation of the laity in these adorations too grew day by day. Bishop
appointed Rev. Fr. Rajaratnam who was to establish the secular institute of
Voluntas Dei in Jaffna In days to come as the Parish Priest of this church. It
could be held that this provision was a driving force for him to draw the
necessary strength and grace from the Eucharistic Lord to get strengthened in
his future activities.
6
deserved our love and respect, and who referred me to the Bishop and
initiated my association with this Institute. I am thankful to God that my
contact with this pleasant personality.
Once Rev. Fr. Spampatti Omi, the then Priest for Chettikulam with
whose guidance I took my first step in my parish work, came to see me. He
was an European priest belonging the oblates of Mary Immaculate. He was
an ardent missionary with a deep spiritual zeal. He was very pleased at being
associated with the members of IVD as it was the above flip chart he made a
comment in Tamil which meant "Observing these 3 fives is cumbersome even
to the angels".
In our day to day life we see the great impact made by what is called
the Absence of criticism and absence of complaint. Just as a coin has two
sides so does each of the human being has two types of temperaments or
characteristics. We offer to see the negative side of every thing and take no
notice of the positive aspects in it or even try to conceal the goodness in it. It
is the bounden duty of every one of us to accept our neighbor as they are. We
should perceive whatever goodness hidden in them and appreciate them and
encourage them to cultivate that goodness found in them. We must forget the
fact that the resultant fruits of first two fives are the 3 rd fives. They are called
the "Spiritual Activities". We the members are called to image in least five acts
of charity even day of our life on account and in memory of the Love of Jesus.
Mr. Emmanuel was working at St. Josephs catholic Press while I was involved
in the catechetical work in conjunction with Rev. Fr. Balasundaram Omi who
was the Director of the of the Catechetical centre that came into being during
that period. I also used undertake special work at the Holy Shrine of Madhu
by order of the Bishop during festivals.
Rev. Father Louis Parent Omi, the founder of the IVD, visited Sri Lanka
in 1966 for the second time and met with the Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal
Thomas Cooray. At this time Rev. Bro George Perera was dispatched to
Canada to pursue his theological studies and to get the formation of voluntas
Dei. Bro George Perera belonged to Colombo Archdiocese where he and
secured a B.A degree at the Peradeniya University. In addition he was a
freelance writer. On returning to Colombo after being ordained a Voluntas Dei
priest in he worked in some parishes of the Archdiocese where he wanted to
7
establish the Voluntas Dei Institute but to no avail. Fr. Parent who was then in
Colombo and arrived in Jaffna also for the second time. At the request of the
Bishop of Jaffna, Rev. Fr. Francis Xavier gathered some selected youth and
organized seminars for them at which Fr. Parent gave them spiritual idea that
sprang from his own experience.
During those days he celebrated the Holy Eucharist at St. Anne's
Church, Pandiyanthalvu where we stayed. At that Eucharistic celebration he
initiated my candidacy and gave his permission to rise to my aspirancy he
also had conversations with us and shared his thoughts.
His Lordship L.R. Anthony was appointed the Auxiliary Bishop of Jaffna
in 1968. As he went to round numerous parishes to administer the Holy
Sacrament of confirmation people stated calling him "confirmation people
stated calling him "Confirmation Bishop". Rev. Fr. Christy Selvaratnam
becomes the Parish Priest of Kilinochchi. I also there to work with him. In the
mean time, Rev. Fr. Ratneiah got an appointment as the Assistants Parish
Priest and came there. So I got an opportunity to work alongside with him as
well. He taught me the way of living as an aspirant Voluntas Dei. To help me
grow in the IVDspiritualy, I was introduced to some priests by the Bishop
himself. There were Rev. Michael Josaph, Rev. Fr. John Francis Omi and Rev.
Fr. Christy Selvaratnam Omi. I always think of them with gratitude.
CHERUBIM ILLAM
The Catechist who returned from India after completing their training
there were doing catechetical work in parishes and schools. The Cherubim
Illam at NO. 110, Main Street, Jaffna had been acquired by Bishop
Emilianuspillai. It was turned out as the Mother House for the catechists
Messrs Emmanuel, Pathinather, Jesuthasan, Pancras, Saundaram,
Selvarasa, Anthonipillai Ariyathas, Jesuthasan (musician), Jacob Saram,
Wilfred, Arokianadar, Arulananthan, Jeyaseelan, saminathan, Ferdinand and
Rajendram had been staying in this house. It was from here that used to go
for their catechetical mission. Their periodical get-together also took place
here. As the Bishop had appointed me as an administrative care taker of this
8
house in order to assist them in the spiritual and other matters connected
therewith, I was transferred from Kilinochchi to No 110, Cherubim Illam.
It was while I was working at the Cherubim. That I who was the Parish
Priest Chundikuly St. John Church met Rev. Fr. Rajaratnam and joined him. I
learned from him about ho who live the Evangelical counsels of Obedience,
poverty and chastity in accordance with the constitutions of the Institute
Volantus Dei.
The year 1970 was very significant to the Institute in as much as the
official launching of the IVD in Sri Lanka. It was for this official launching that
the Founder Rev. Fr. Parent arrived in Jaffna for the third time. The Institute of
Volantus Dei was officially by Fr. Parent at St. John's Church in the presence
of his Lordship Bishop Emilianuspillai and Rev. Fr. Rajaratnam was installed
as its Regional Director. He, together with Rev. Fr. Ratniah and me formed a
team. I proposed my first vows on 8 th September, the Bishop of our Divine
Mother, the same year and at the same church. The Bishop of Jaffna Rt. Rev.
Dr. Emilianuspillai Omi accepted my vows.
9
Founder's wish and the importance of getting together made the above
arrangements. The meetings were held at the Parish House of St. James
Church. It was the convening of these meetings which in fact was the driving
force the formation of the Institution of Voluntas Dei. Growth of the Institute
and the progress of projects were discussed at these team meetings; and it
was a great opportunity given to the members to meet each other and foster
the loving relationship.
Though I was staying at Gurunagar, I used to go to the Jaffna
Cathedral when Rev. Fr. Joy Chrysostom was Parish Priest there to render
my service in areas such as preparing the candidates for adult Baptism,
preparing the parties for marriage betrothals and teaching catechism. In
addition my service extended to Thirunagar which is called “Thiddy”.
The Rev. Father celibate men of the IVD spent most of their time in
parish work and catechetical work in the beginning. As such they were unable
to devote sufficient time in getting more vocations to their Institute and to
implement their work programme. At the same time this quiet fitting to say that
the work performed and the life lived by the volunteers largely attracted the
people in their work place. Being attracted by the life style of Rev. Fr.
Rajaratnam and Mr. Mariceline, the youth of St. James parish got together
and tried to live IVDs’ spiritual exercise of the 5-5-5. These training steps were
very helpful for them in their ordinary secular life some even get into group
and made their commitments too.
In these days a grand vocational Exhibition was held in Jaffna at
Diocesan level. Members belonging to different orders did very good
exhibition of their organization by erecting special stalls. The Institute of
Voluntas Dei too participated at this exhibition in full swing. It exhibited the
origin of the Institute, its membership, the spirituality of 5-5-5 and its mission
quite splendidly. Small brochures about the Institute were also issued. This
exhibition was very useful in making a number of people living in the Dioceses
of Jaffna and Mannar to come to understand about the Institute of Voluntas
Dei.
10
Thereafter, this exhibition was held at Mirusuvil parish too. In addition,
competition on catechism and Voluntas Dei Institute were also held for
students and prizes were awarded to the winners. The participation and
cooperation of the parishioners gave us a real encouragement.
We cannot forget the tremendous role played by the Holy Family
particularly sister Daniela (superior) Sister Calista and Sister Alice and their
novices. Both in the parish work and other needs thy helped and encouraged
us. The numbers of the then Girls choir also deserved our gratitude.

St. Josephs’ Church at Achchuvely, hi sown village on 12 July 1973 by His
Lordship Bishop Deogupillai. Though a vast arena of service was laid bare
open before us at Kilinochchi we i.e the IVD priests and I were very much
concerned in living and fostering the Voluntas spiritually with a team spirit and
brotherhood.
The Rev. Sisters of the Holy Family were staying behind St. Theresa’s
Maha Vidyalayam at Karadipokku junction, Kilinochchi. An orphanage and a
nursery school were functioning under their care. During the period under
reference Rev. Sr. Innocencia was the mother superior and the Late Rev. Sr.
Noela who was affectionately called “Periya Sister” was in charge of the
nursery. These two and other Rev. Sisters were very helpful to us in our
various activities such as Home visists, Chatechism and choir practice for
Liturgy going the length and breadth of the vast parish of Kilinochchi. I
appreciate their services very much.

situated on A-9 Kandy Road at Muhamalai as a great help to establish the
Mother House for the Institute of Voluntas Dei in exchange of the land that
belonged to the Institute at Ariyalai.
At the beginning only the priest and celibate men were the fully fledged
members in the IVD. After the period 1971-1972 married couples too joined
the institute. First it was at Laos that spiritual Teams consisting of married
couples were functioning. Fr. Parent wished that they too should be
associated in the Institute. Thereafter program was made in this direction. But
there were objections to this from other religious organizations which argued
that the laity could only be associates and not as members fully fledged with
equal states. But Rev. Fr. Parent, the Founder, not accepting their argument
and insisting the possibility of working together of the laity, the priests and the
celibate men as full fledged members with equal status, nurtured the Institute
in that orientation. It was on this basis that in the Sri Lankan Province too the
married couples were accepted as associate members.

called “Parent Illam” named after him. The constitution work sent on rapidly
without any obstacles.
Overseer Mr. Gnanapragasam who supervised the building work had a
deep love and concern towards the Voluntas. Being aware of our needs, he
came forward to help spontaneously. We remember with gratitude the
successful completion of the construction work by Mr. Thiruchchelvam and Mr.
Alfred under the supervision of Gnanapragasam. The Mother House was
declared open by Lordship Bishop Diogupillai on 10 th February 1976.
“Dwell not where there’s no dwelling place for God” is a famous
proverb in Tamil. There was a famous shrine dedicated to St. Philomena
nearby. It was also rehabilitated and turned into a shrine dedicated to our
Lady of Health (Annai Veilankanni shrine). It was also blessed by the Bishop
on the same day and was declared open by him. Novena in honour of our
Lady of Health was conducted there on every Saturday at 4.30 p.m. which
was attracted by devotees from all over the places who thronged to get the
blessings of our Divine Mother. The church Feast was celebrated every year
on the 3rd Sunday of September. The first ever such festive mass was offered
by the Bishop himself. On the same occasion some of the Voluntas Dei
members renewed their vows/ commitments.
The Novena in view of the above Feast sponsored by people of
different parishes such as Muhamalai, Mirusuvil, Chavakachcheri, Pointpedro,
PandeterruppuSillalai and Gurunagar with their active participation in the
liturgy. The contribution made by the family of Sebadeu of Gurunagar and that
of Mr. & Mrs. Thavaratnam were commendable. It must also mentioned that
that it was the Thavaratnams who gifted the sacred statues of our Lady of
Veilankanni and other goods to the church.
At this time a small car was bought to meet our needs. It actually
helped us in facilitating our work. Thereafter certain other facilities was added
to Parent Ilam”. The Generator that was at the Pandetterruppu Retreat House
was bought at the recommendation of Bishop Deogupillai, repaired and
installed at Muhamalai House enabling the generation and supply of electricity
to the House, church and church premises. To address the problem of
drinking water a large open well was dug and constructed pipes and water
tanks were also filled where necessary. A water pump was also purchased at
14
an economical price from on eof our family friends in Mannar. This pump is
still in use at our Thiruvady Illam. Mr. Navaratnam of Mirusuvil and Mr.
Thankarasa of Kodikamamm worked day and night tirelessly in the electrical
wiring and pipe fittings. We thank them for constructed near parent Illam along
the main road this fulfilling another basic need of the people around.

school Catechetical classes. A training was also given them in conducting the
Church Liturgy meaningfully.
Special classes were held for them at Parent Illam by some English
Teachers. Question papers for the Kandy Ampitiya National seminary
entrance examinations were caused to be brought and the examination was
held at which Masters Christy Selvarajah, Athiriyampillai and Velichore passed
successfully.
All three of them were sent to South India for further studies. Velichore
received a few months training at the Thindivananm Catechetical centre. He
could not continue his training as he was indisposed. So he returned and left
the IVD. Master Athriapillai pursued a degree course at Madurai Karumathoor
College. Due to bad physical conditions, he too returned home. He chose to
be a celibate member, gradually got promoted information and made a
commitment. For a few years he worked at Muhamalai as a celibate. There
was no one parallel to him in establishing good rapport with the people, and in
decoration of altar and church including the provision of sound and light.
Having discharged his duties in various ways towards the well being of Parent
Illam, he left for Canada at his own will and effort and now living in Montreal
Province as a celibate member.
Master Christy Selvaraj completed his Philosophy at Trichy St. Pauls
seminary in South India, started his Theology back in Sri Lanka at the
Ampitiya National seminary and completed it at St. Francis Xavier seminary
Jaffna. Having been a deacon he worked in the parishes of Muhamalai and
Thalayadi. He was one of the six who were ordained priests on 19 th June
1986 by his Lordship Bishop Deogupillai at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Jaffna. He
worked in various parishes of the Diocese of Jaffna. It could be said that the
first priest begotten by Parent Illam was Rev. Fr. Christy Selvaraj. After
entering into an agreement with his Lordship Bishop Kingsley Swampillai of
Trincomalee –Batticaloa Diocese he was sent to work at the Parish of
Valaichenai. But due to bad health he was called back.
During the period 1992-1998 Rev. Fr. Evon Carpenter was the Director
General of our Institute. He visited Sri Lanka (Colombo) twice during this
period. The then situation of our country and his own physical conditions
posed some obstacles across his visit to Jaffna. Only few members of the IVD
16
had the opportunity to meet him. It is significant to point out that he had been
the Rector of the Voluntas Dei Major seminary in Canada for many years. At
this request in 1998, Rev. Fr. Christy Selvaraj went to Canada, joined Fr.
Rajaratnam and engaged in the spiritual apostolate towards the Diaspora of
the Sri Lankans there. He returned in 2000. Due to recurrent ill health he
retired from service and is now looked after the Institute of Voluntas Dei.

tours. Adding to our movable properties a new Volkswagen car was also
bought. It was very useful in meeting various needs of our house and the
parish.
Director General Rev. Fr. Rene Desy visited Sri Lanka for the second
timein the final week of December 1979. Parent Illam accorded him a grand
welcome. He stayed at Parent Illam, met the IVD Priests and seminarians and
had talks with them. He gave his full support for the development programme
of the Institute. In the first week January, 1980 he returned to Canada.
Rev. Fr. Maria Le Roche, a long time member of the Institute Voluntas
Dei assumed office as the Director General in 1981. He visited Sri Lanka on
19
21.11.1981 and stayed at Parent Illam, met the priests and members and
encouraged them in all their endeavors towards the upkeep of the Institute
and returned to Canada deeply concerned with the progress of the Institute.
By the side of Paren Illam another new building was put up to be eased
as the Institute Secretariat and guest house. The relatives of Rev. Fr.
Rajaratnam voluntarily come forward and provided the financial and material
requirements with the intention that such a building should consist of all
facilities. We are very grateful to them. The construction work of this house
took place during the 1981-84 periods.
During this period Mannar was separated from the Jaffna Diocese and
began to function as a separate Diocese. The married couples from the both
diocese who were to join the Institute of Voluntas Dei were sufficiently briefed
about the Institute and were being prepared through team meetings prior to
joining at different stages of the training.
A barbaric racial riot erupted in the Southern Sri Lanka in 1983. The
whole world expressed concerns in solidarity with the affected people. During
this aweful period several thousands of Tamil people were mercilessly killed.
The remaining Tamils in the south who had lost their properties and
Resources ran for their lives in sorrow and tears moving towards North
seeking refugee. Several affected people who came from the upcountry took
refugee at the Pallai Maha Vidyalayam. Joining hands with the helping
groups, IVD also extended his assistance and fulfilled the urgent needs of the
displaced people.
Some married couples who had already been prepared were admitted
to the Aspirancy ub September this year. They were selected from Mirusuvil,
20
Kilaly and Pallai areas. They were briefed of the Institute, its mission and life
style at Parent Illam.
On 07.10.1984 Rev. Fr. General Maria Le Roche visited IVD Sri Lanka
for the second time. During his stay of about two weeks he met all the priests,
seminarians, celibates and Associate Members and had dialogue with them.
He also delivered comprehensive talks and cheered the members prior to his
departure.

conducted for the school children by the seminaries. The students who take
part get the maximum benefit.
Some poor students were given the opportunity for residential training
in Education, Disispline given the opportunity and hard work. In order to given
some secular experience to the seminarians, some members of the laity are
usually invited. They would give their guidance by providing some ideas that
include some life experience. An experienced elderly English teacher offered
to teach these students English. He was just among the seminarians and very
helpful in all their needs. He was (Late) Mr. Vijayaratnam who worked in a
Government Corporation as an Audit.
Another unforgettable personality was (Late) Mr. Saminathan (Car
Maththaiah). He was staying of Parent Illam and was supervising the coconut
Estates belonging to the Diocese of Jaffna. It was he who stood by the side of
Rev. Fr. Guy de Fontgalland when he died. It will not be an exaggeration to
say that he not only helped IVD in various ways but also took great
satisfaction in this growth.
It is worthy of mention here that Retreats for the Apostolic Carmelite
sisters and the Holy Family Sisters were being conducted by the Voluntas
priests at Parent Illam.
Meetings and get together of the married couples who are associate
members of the IVD used to be held at Parent Illam in a Family atmosphere.
At the end of the day they return home with the full spiritual satisfaction.
In order to prepare ourselves for the Birth of our Lord, a day’s
recollection will be held every year. During the offertory processions at the
Holy Mass small gifts are offered as a sign of sharing. After the communion
members would go other income generating ventures such as vegetable
Garden, Cattle Farm, poultry and near the altar one by one and would take
any one of the gifts placed there. This type of recollections used to take place
at the places of pilgrimage such as Charty and Thampallai. Once a sum of
money was collected instead of gifts as a token of Christmas sharing and was
donated to the orphanage at Mirusuvil which was run by the Holy Family
Sisters.
For the Repose of the departed souls of the IVD members Holy Mass
was offered on a particular day of the year at which all members got together
22
and prayed for the soul remembered. In 2007 this mass was offered at Mother
Therese's Convent in the company of the Elders and the orphans who were
there. It was followed by lunch. The sector Animator Rev. Fr. Anton Mariathas
was the celebrant who offered the Holy Mass in a meaningful manner.
We intact were a happy community and there was never a death for
merriments and enjoyments. Our priests and seminarians are some what
skilled in the art of cooking. Some times we are assisted by our associate
members and supporters as well in this regard until we get the services of a
permanent cook this esercise goes on. I thank these good hearted people.
An exhibition was held at Parent Illam by the Jaffna Cathecatical
Centre on Catechism and Liturgy. A large crowd of people and students from
Vadamaradchy, Thenmaradchy and Pachchilaipalli areas visited and
benefited. A team comprising Rev. Fathers, Rev. Sisters and catechist under
the leadership of Rev. Sanmuganathan and Director of the Catechetical
centre arranged the stalls in a fitting manner and explained everything.
Since Fr. Rajaratnam was also a member of the Central Council he had
to go to Canada every year at a particular time. Also he had to participate at
IVD meetings held in foreign countries. The assistance was sought priests to
help the Voluntas and to conduct liturgical services at Muhamalai Parish.
Significant among those who so helped us were: Rev. Frs. Sahayathas,
Mangalaraj Mariathas OMI. Both the Diocesan and the Oblate priests were
always at our disposal. Even at this very moment they are helpful to us. We
think of each of them with gratitude.
In 1986
Master Dunston and Master Rochmond were sent to the OMI seminary
of Colombothurai to prepare for their G.C.E. (A/L) Examination. With the un
tiresome effirt of Rev. Fr. Jesuthasan OMI, they sat for that examination and
23
passed with flying colors, just with one year preparation. Thereafter they wer
coached by Rev. Fr. Philip of Parent Illam with view to sit for the Entrance
Examination of the Major Seminary. Rochmond left the Institute and went
home. Master Dunstan preserved in his goal and got through the examination.
He entered the Major seminary in 1987 and began his training in pre-
philosophy.
Due to the Ethnic crisis and Military operations the Tamil people were
subjected to untold hardship in 1987. It was the churches and places of
worship that sheltered them and helped them. In this way the shrine of our
lady of Health (Annai vailankanni) which housed the Parent Illam at
Muhamalai too gave them shelter and protected them. When the IPKF came
to that area, it was Rev. Fr. Rajaratnam who created a good relationship
between the IPKF and the refugees by making them (IPKF) understand the
situation thus enabling the people not to be exposed to unwanted problems
and sorrows. He did this not only at Muhamalai but also at the villages of
Pallai and Thalayadi and helped solve the problem of getting the essentials
such as food and medicine as much as possible. The reception hall at Parent
Illam was turned as the Dispensary. We identified patients with headache,
fever, stomachache, diarrhea and malaria, registered them with the IPKF, got
the medicine and tablets form them and treated the patients. Miss. Vasanthi
(Mirusuvil) and Miss Malini (Anaikottai) were very helpful to us in this medical
programme. Miss. Malini was the one who worked as the typist at the
Administrative block of Parent Illam.
At this period the MPCS branch of Muhamalai and their stores were
also housed at Parent Illam. On 22 nd November 1987 The Institute of Voluntas
Dei was promoted to the state of secular Institute with the Pontifical Right
from the earlier state of Diocesan Institute coming under the jurisdiction of the
Bishop. On 22nd of November 1988 the constitution and the Rules of our
Institute obtained the papal approval.

Sri Lanka in 1988
Prior to 1988 the IVD India and the IVD Sri Lanka were merged as one
province Rev. Fr. Rajaratnam was the then Director. After 1988 they were de-
merged and were functioning under the direct administration of the central
council. During the month of January 1988 Director General, Fr. Maria Le
Roche visited Sri Lanka. It was his third visit
Rev. Fr. Philip who was earlier in diocesan priest serving the diocese of
Mannarand who, under the advice of his Lordship Bishop Deogupillai joined
the Institute of Voluntas Dei in 1981 and went through the training stages
starting from aspirancy and qualified himself as a full fledged Voluntas, was
appointed the regional Director for Sri Lanka. It was Fr. Rajaratnam who
personally met His Lordship Thomas Soundaranayagam the then Bishop of
Mannar, explained the situation and pleaded him to release Fr. Philip for the
Institute of Voluntas Dei. Without refusal, the Bishop said his sanction and
thereafter Fr. Philip accepted his appointment. Fr. Rajaratnam, left for Canada
seeking medical treatment. Though it was unfortunate for him not to continue
to serve in our soil, he was always mindful of us. It is no exaggeration to say
that his annual visit to Sri Lanka, meeting his beloved people, holding talks
and establishing friendly relationships, taking part in their joys and sorrows
and giving them his valuable advice are all just the manifestation of his deep
concern for us.
Due to the ethnic conflict that was on at the time of the takeover of
Parent Illam at Muhamalai by Rev. Fr. A. Philip, the whole premises including
the church and the house were filled with the displaced people.
Rev. Brothers Sebastian Croose, Justin Dalima, shayanathan, Anton
Leon Ananthakumar, Dunstan were the Seminarians who were staying at
Parent Illam together with the students namely Richard, Selvaseelan and
Anthony Joseph. Soosaipillai Annamalai, Anne Koduthore (Jega) and muself
were also there as celibate men. Rev. Fr. Christy Selvarajah, Mr. Maricellin
Anthony, Mr. Anton Francis, his wife Theresa Francis were appointed by the
central council as the Regional Councilors. After the term of Mr. & Mrs.
Francis came to an end. Mr. Anthony Anthonyipillai and Mrs.
Sebamalaiyammah Alfred were appointed as councilors in their place.
25
Later Br. Anton Leon and Br. anandakumar left the Instittute of Voluntas
Dei to join the Dioceses of Mannar and Jaffna respectively. Br. Justin Delima
also left also the Institute on his own, got married and is now serving St.
Xavier College, Mannar as an English Teacher.
A three days seminar for the Secular Institutes was held in Bangalore,
India in May 1990. The Sri Lankan Regional Director Rev. Fr. A. Philip also
attended this. As I was in need of an eye treatment, he took me also along
with him and made arrangements for me to stay.
After the seminar was over he took me to the Aravinthan Eye Hospital
at Annanagar. The eye testing continued for three days. Rev. Fr. A. Philip
26
booked a room at a near by hotel and look after my needs. The gesture of
Rev. Fr. A. Philip was a new experience for me. How could I ever forget his
service of this nature? It's memory can never be removed from my heart. I
owe him my gratitude. "One eye" said the eye specialist who examined my
eye test related papers "has lost its vision for which there's no treatment,
thank God, the other eye is saved".
He prescribed some tablets. We bought them and left the hospital.
Thereafter we visited the O.M.M. I. House and the house of the "Institute of
Voluntas Dei in Kerala where we had dialogue and cordial relationship with
those present and returned to Sri Lanka with renewed favour and new
experiences.
27
gratitude we remember the tremendous help given by General Rev. Fr. Maria
Le Roche in purchasing this house.
At a time when the country was in crisis we the Voluntas too had to
undergo several hardships. We had to get accustomed to living in bunkers
due to heavy continued artillery shelling from Elephant pass. Even Liturgical
rights including Holy Mass were held in the bunkers. At the same time
incessant artillery shelling air attacks and gunshots from helicopters too were
directed from the Jaffna Fort arriving at the civilian residences. As a result of
which several people were displaced and took shelter in and around the
church at Muhamalai. In providing their livelihood needs the Voluntas took the
lead and looked them after as best as they could. In doing so they got the
assistance from the HUDEC of Jaffna too. Special mention has to be made
here in respect of our Brothers Soosaipillai Annamalai and Ann Koduthore
(Jega) who actively involved themselves in this exercises. As the main road
via Elephant Pass remained closed during this period, people used the
Kompali Road and Uriyan road to go to Kilinochchi passing the Elephant
Pass. Therefore, our Parent Illam was also used as the go-down to store
cereals that come through Kilinochchi. During this period Rev. Fr. Philip who
underwent hernia surgery was staying at Muhamalai for his was staying at
Muhamalai for his convalescence.
Ceasing of shelling from Fort and the Onslaught on Elephant on
Elephant Pass
A strange sort of peace prevailed followed by the exit of the Army from
the Fort of Jaffna, but at the same time the onslaught on Elephant Pass
began. The displaced people who were staying at Muhamalai went to Jaffna
and resettled in their own places. The seminarians with no idea as to where
to go went towards Jaffna in their bicycle taking along with Rev. Philip also.
Though they had some accommodation at St. Martins Seminary, Jaffna, it
was not sufficient. Therefore our friends Mr. & Mrs. Vethanayagam (Rani
Akka) Mr. & Mrs. Seelan (Santhi Akka) and Mr. & Mrs. Sebastianpillai
accepted our seminarians and allowed us to stay in their houses two by two
in each of them. They treated them as members of their own family. We thank
and appreciate their questure. After some days, with the help of Rev. Fr. S.J.
Emmanual Rector of the Jaffna major seminary, we got the boarding home of
28
the Philosophy students for a period of one month where Voluntas grew in
love and fellowship as one family the guidance of Rev. Fr. Philip. Whereas at
Parent Illam, Muhamalai Soosaipillai, Anne Koduthore, Alagannan (The cook)
and I were staying we were able to manage during the day time. Others who
were with me were involved in their own business being mingled with the
people. But the might house for me were terrifying with the sounds of
shelling. I was very much affected by this horrifying situation at night. I got
tired and confused. All of a sudden there came Rev. Fr. David and Master
Anyon Mariathas from Thalayadi who comforted and encouraged me. Fr.
Edwin too came there at an unexpected time and stayed with us for the night.
We just cannot forget passing the night sleeping outside the house under the
mango tree.
29
Anton Mariathas from Kilali, village in the parish of Mirusuvil held a very close
relationship with the community at Parent Illam. He was then working as an
auditor at the Multi-purpose Cooperative Society Pallai. As he was desirous
of being a celibate man in the Institute of Voluntas Dei Rev. Fr. Philip took him
to Colombo and made arrangements at the Oblate Seminary for him to
pursue his studies in English. In 1992 he began as an aspirant and thereafter,
as he wanted to become a priest, he pursued his priestly studies at the
National Seminary, Ampitiya. Accommodated with the Oblet scholastics, he
received a combinedformation together with the Oblate.
The General Chapter of the IVD was held in 1992 in Canada. the Sri
Lankan Regional Director Rev. Fr. Philip took flight to Canada to take part in
it. There he met our Founder Rev. Fr. Louis Parent. He made use of this visit
in getting to know the various patterns of administrations in various countries.
This was very useful for him and for his mission. Ir was the tenure of Rev. Fr.
Evon Carpenter as the third Director General of the IVD. As mentioned
elsewhere, he visited Sri Lanka twice during his tenure.
As his Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. B. Deogupillai, the Bishop of Jaffna who
deserved our love and respect retired from his Episcopate, His Lordship Rt.
Rev. Dr. Thomas Soundaranayagam the Bishop of Mannar was appointed in
his place on 6th July, 1992. A grand farewell function was accorded to honour
Bishop Deogupillai.
Rt. Rev. Joseph was consecrated as the Bishop of Mannar on 20 th
October the same year. It needs to be mentioned here that some of our
Voluntas priests were ordained by him.
Literary work took place profusely during the period of Rev. Fr. Philip.
Informative classes on the Institute and meditations were conducted during
the Easter week every year during the course of which Rev. Fr. Philip gave
30
training to the Voluntas in a constructive manner. In particular, the constitution
of the Institute was translated into Tamil part by part, typeset and issued to
members. In addition, the Institute's publication called "Thiruvulam" was
published thrice a year. The other literary works in booklet form was
published by Fr. Philip for the promotion of spirituality among the Voluntas
include "5-5-5 an introduction to spirituality", Anmeega Thuligal "Our Father"
The church of Our Lady Good Health (Annai Vailankanni) one of the
famous places of pilgrimage in the diocese of Jaffna was changed into the
parish church of Muhamalai in 1992 by his Lordship Bishop B. Deogupillai.
Rev. Fr. C.J. AnthonyBala was appointed the Parish Priest. On 25 th April 1992
Rev. Fr. Philip and Rev. Fr. Christy Selvaraj joined with the parish who was
the chief celebrant and concelebrated the Holy Mass. At this special Mass the
following Lay people made their first vows as the Associate Members of the
Institute Voluntas Dei.

It is to be noted here that ours is the on the secular Institute in Sri
Lanka comprising priests, celibate men and married couples as its members.
It was this year that the Institute got Rev. Fr. lloyed Shanthikumar as its
gift. Having begun his Aspirancy in the Institute on 11 th July in 1992 Fr.
Shanthikumar was raised to the Probation on the same day. Thereafter he
went to Manilla in the Philippines to pursue his higher studies.
Due to the ongoing ethnic crisis in the country the village closed to
Palaly came under Army occupation. People got displaced. People at
Vasavialn and Oddhapulam too had to vacate their houses. The Rosarian
Sisters at Oddhapulam (Tholagatty) also had to quit their convents. When
they were in the look out for a suitable house for them, we in consultation with
Bishop Tom, accommodated them at Muhamalai Parent Illam. Part of the
32
house was used by the Parish priest and the rest of the place was used by
the Rosarian Sisters. The parlor at Parent Illam was turned out as a chapel
for the use of their inturgical services. The house and the surroundings too
were modified to suit their needs pertaining to prayers and meditation. The
available land around the house served their purpose of income generation
through vegetable garden and poultry keeping. These changes occurred
during the period of 1992 and 1993.
Around the year 1995 the Sri Lankan IVD Region was divided into two
sectors namely Jaffna and Colombo. Rev. Fr. Sebastian Croos also was
33
serving in Mannar Diocese was transferred to Jaffna Voluntas House to take
charge of the responsibilities of the Jaffna sector, while Rev. Fr.
Shanthikumar took over the responsibilities of the Colombo sector. The
regional Director Rev. Fr. Philip, along with various missionary commitments
in the diocese of Mannar, managed the Administrative work of the Institute
Voluntas Dei in an excellent manner.
Rev. Fr. Sebastian Croos, Mr. Mariceline Anthony, Mr. Johnpillai, Mrs.
Ponnamma Johnpillai were appointed as Councilors of IVD along with the
Regional Director and rendered their service. Master Richard Anthony, a
member of our Institute pursued his degree course at the University of Jaffna.
In 1995 Rev. Fr. Sebastian Croos and I were discharging our duties as
administrators at Thiruvadi, Jaffna and Parent Illam, Muhamalai respectively.
During these days we received the news about the demise of the father of Fr.
Sebastian Croos. Fr. Sebastian Croos and Brother Dunstan proceeded to
Mannar for the funeral. Therefore I had to go to Thiruvady in Jaffna. The
shelling and air strikes by the Army was so deafening that I could no longer
stay there. So I took into my custody the documents of the Institute and some
important books and proceeded to Muhamalai in our car with some minor
seminarians. In order to help us Bro. Anthony Joseph came by motorcycle
and escorted before our car. After we had passed Chavakachcheri he had
returned. We reached Muhamalai without any obstructions. I had no sleep
that night. To our surprise suddenly around midnight, we saw Anthony Joseph,
Gabriepillai and Tony Geran at our house at Muhamalai dismounting from
their motor cycles which were laden with essential items such as rice, sugar
and flour. According to them the reason for their sudden nocturnal journey
was the announcement by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam that all people
in the Jaffna peninsular should quit Jaffna and pass the Navatkuli bridge
immediately. They further told us that the whole people ein Jaffna were
coming behind either on foot or bicycles amidst untold hardships leaving
everything and taking with them only certain essentials. So did our "Thiruvadi
students reach Muhamalai.
34
At the Administration Block of Parent
Illam
35
became vacant. We furnished that room with all the facilities. Whenever
necessary the Bishop would offer Mass for the Holy Cross Sisters remaining
at Parent Illam and attend to their spiritual needs. Otherwise, joined with the
Bishop we would celibate the Holy Mass and praise God in the mornings. In
the evenings we would recite the Holy Rosary with the feeling of one family.
Also riding on a bicycle, the Bishops would go to the adjoining villages and
observe the people's way of living. He would also share his experiences with
us. Thu sour daily life with the Bishop, despite the hardships and grief's went
on with joy. The following were the people who were staying at this house
along with the Bishop. Fr. Sebastian Croos, Mr. Maricilline,Godwin Camillus
(Sana), Theepan, Vinoth, Vanitha Akka 9cook) and Selvi Rev. Fr. Edmond
Michael OMI was also staying for a few days. Some priests who call on the
Bishop also would stay here. In short, this house was Bishop's House itself.
Fr. Loret was a young priest. He was serving the displaces people at
Kachchai area jointly with another priest. As he fell ill he was admitted at
Manthihai Hospital I Vadmarachchi. There he succumbed to death due to
insufficient medical facilities. His sudden demise plunged everyone into shock
and grief. His remains were kept at the guest house of Parent Illam for one
day for the general public to pay their last respects. While the Bishop himself
was being oresent, the Priests, Sisters and laity conducted continued prayer
service for the respose of his soul and paid their last respects in tears. the
following day his body was buried with due respect at Champianpattu, his
native village.
36
premises and arranged everything. There we experienced a shortage of food.
The Rosarian sisters and the Bishop's house came to our help and fulfilled our
need for food. the displaced girl by the name of Selvamary (Selvi) who was
with us at Muhamalai also came to Thiruvadi and helped us for few days. She
had been working at the Diocesan Liturgical Centre, Jaffna with Rev. Fr.
Nicholas (Director) I too had been working there during the period 1992
-1994. She had been helped in various ways towards the promotion of IVD.
Particularly she rendered yeomen services in the field of typing and issuing
the IVD publications with the assistance of her co-workers Miss. Maristella
and Mr. Marianayagam. I think of them with love and gratitude. Fr. Sebastian
Croos and I looked after both thiruvady and Muhamalai houses taking turns. I
employed one Mr. Velu for the cooking and other needs at Muhamalai.
Another namely, Master George a youth from Ittavil used to come to help us
casually. Eventually George stayed at Parent Illam and worked as an
assistant playing various roles including being a car driver. Later at the
recommendation of Rev. Fr. Dunstan he was appointed the driver at the
convent of the Sisters of Mother Theresa and still doing his duties their as a
loyal servant. Further he extends his helping hands to us as well as if a
member in IVD family especially in emergency situations, with interest in the
progress and promotion of the Institute. I thank him and appreciate hi
services.
37
There were already many books in the Thiruvady library for the use of
our seminary students. Some of them were damaged. So we launched a huge
work plan of refurbishing our library the components of which included:
selection and classification of books, affixing of Voluntas seal and indexing.
Mrs. Sebamaiyamma Alrfed, Selvamary alias Selvi, Joeline Raaji and Godwin
Camillus were engaged in these exercises. Whild they were sorting out the
books they found a pro LTTE book among them. A question arose as to she is
to carry that book to the Thiruvady House. Selvi and Raaji took upon
themselves this task. While so doing they were checked at the Military
checkpoint situated at the Old Park Road an inquiry was held. Fr. Nicholas
who came that way was these people and tried to release them by talking to
the Army, but to no avail. some other priests also made some effort in this
regard. that too failed. These two were taken to the higher -ups for further
inquiry as a result of which Godwin Cammilus was too arrested, assaulted
and was subjected to pain and agony. Due to the side effects caused by this
he had been rendered sick even today. Rev. Fr. Sebastian Croos, the curator
of the house was also taken by the Army for inquiry. After being kept there for
one full day and night without any interrogation, he was released and was
brought back to Thiruvady the Army. Others were detained. Their parents and
relatives were crying all the time helplessly, going from place to place. Just as
the people of God prayed for the deliverance of St. Peter when he was kept in
the prison9Acts 12:5) so did the Church of Jaffna regions pray together for
their release. Due to the power of prayer and the interaction of the Bishop of
Jaffna they were released before His Lordship Bishop Thomas
Soundaranayagam. Their arrest took place on January 12 th 1997. Even today
I thank God and think of them in my prayer.
38
Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Rayappu Joseph Bishop of Mannar St. Sebastian's
Cathedral, Mannarand was sent to parishes in Mannar to do apostolic work.
Periya Kunchukulam, my own village was too one of his missionary fields.
Today my village people feel very happy and proud of the excellence of his
dedicated service.
Priestly Ordination
On 27th July 1997 Rev. Deacon Dunstan was ordained a priest by the
Bishop of Mannar Rt. Rev. Dr. Rayappu Joseph at St. Lucia's Cathedral,
Kotahena. The next day he celebrated his first Mass at the Church of Mater
Dolorosa, New Chetty Street Colombo. At the same event Mr. Soosaipillai
Annamalai professed his first vows as a lay celibate. Fr. Dunstan began his
Priestly Ministry at St. Sebastian's Cathedral, Mannar as the first Assistant
Parish Priest. Few months after Fr. Dunstan paid a visit to Jaffna. On the first
day in Jaffna he offered Holy Mass at the IVD House, Thiruvady. the next day
he offered Holy Mass for the first time at the Church of Our Lady of Chair,
Sillalai, his ntive place. The voluntas Family joining with the parishioners of
Sillalai joyously sang praises to God.
In General chapter of the IVD was held in Canada in July 1998. Rev.
Fr. Philip and Shanthikumar participated. Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar was selected
as the new IVD Regional Director for Sri Lanka. Rev. Fr. Dunstan, Rev. Bro
Soosaipillai Annamalai, Mr & Mrs. Alfred Sebamalaiyamma were selected as
the new new councilors.
The Sri Lankan region of Voluntas Dei prospered into three sectors,
namely Jaffna Colombo and Mannar. The official paper "thiruvulam" was
computerized and continued its journey. Fr. Sebastian Croos was transferred
from Jaffna and accepted the assignment of being the parish priest of
Pallimunai in the diocese of Mannarplus the IVD Sector Animator for Jaffna.
Fr. Dunston, while being a lecturer both at St. Francis Xavier seminary and
39
Catechetical Centre, Jaffna, was assisting Mr. Maricelline Anthony was
appointed the Sector animator for Jaffna. Fr. Dunstan, while being a Lecturere
both at St. Francis Xavier's Seminary and Catechetical centre, Jaffna, was
assisting Mr. Maricelline Anthony.
Seminars giving insights of the Institute Voluntas Dei were organized at
North Kopay Anakoddai and Delft with the concurrence of the respective
parish priests in 1999. These seminars consisted of the following:
1. Eucharistic Celebration
2. Introduction on the Institute of Voluntas Dei by Fr. Dunstan
3. Meeting and Discussion with selected participants who had the desire to
join the IVD
Sufficient explanations were given to questions raised by the
participants. The associate members Mr. & Mrs. Johnpillai Mr. & Mrs. Stanly
Marianayagam, Mr. & Mrs. Mariathas and Mr. Alfred were attended these
seminars and very helpful to Fr. Dunstan and Mr. Mariceline. As a result of the
seminar held at Anakoddai, a group was formed there. It was known as the
“Mario Group “
On 2nd January, 1999 Mrs. Sebamalaiyamma Alfred passed away after
a brief period of illness. The whole Voluntas Family mourned over her death
as it was a great loss sense fully took part in her funeral rites, paid the
respects and prayed for the repose of her soul. Thereafter, Mr. Johnpillai and
Mrs. Ponnamma Jphnpillai were reappointed Regional connections for the
vacancy created by her death.
The Voluntas suffered another great loss on the 1 st September 1999
caused by the sudden death of our associate member Mr. Sebastianpillai
Jacob of pallai. The Voluntas family took part in the funeral Service and
prayed for the repose of his soul.
40
together with the Oblates. As such he had to get the Oblates formation. But
what the Voluntas needed was a formation for the Secular Institutes. It may be
that due to this fact that he must have been inspired by the Holy Spirit in such
a way that he could get to know of land put up for sale close to the National
Seminary and that he could maintain a good relationship with the owners of
the said land. He immediately brought this matter to the notice of Fr.
Shanthikumar, our Regional Director. Both of them went to Kandy and visited
the site. As it was close to the National Seminary it was found to be suitable
for a house for the IVD. So, a formal application was sent to the Director
General, Rev. Fr. Francois Hamel for his approval which was granted without
any objection. We got the services of a government approved Land surveyor
by whom the Land surveyed and demarcated in 1999. In the exercise of this
land survey I too joined with Bro Mariathas and helped him. At that time I was
able to run up and down that premises. But today, when I think that I am
unable to do so I feel very sad. The extent of this land is about 2 ½ Acres.
This land situated at 534, Eastbound, Meekanuwa, Ampitiya, Kandy was
owned by David chinnappa with whom we negotiated, fixed the price and
purchased that property.
There was another displacement of people in that particular area that
took place at the end of this year planning to move from Thiruvady we were
looking for a house. In response we got a house that belonged to the
SuhaValvu” (Healthy Life) Institute functioning at Chundikuly. It was Rev. Fr.
Damian, OMI who facilitated this arrangement but on condition that we could
stay in that holuseonly till 30 th April, 2000 after which we were to find a house
elsewhere. If it was the will of God, we the Voluntas cannot but accept it.
41
former Regional Director for Sri Lanka and central councilor also had arrived
and took part in the event. Prominent among the participants were the Bishop
of Jaffna, Priests and Nuns and also a large number of lay people. All of them
joined the Voluntas in thanking and praising God for the resources he had
given and the blessings he had showered on the IVD to prosper. Rev. Fr.
Rajaratnam and Mr. Mariceline were honored with “Ponnadai” (Braided
Shawl)
After the Silver jubilee celebrations of Parent Illam were over Our
Regional Director Fr. Shanthikumar brought Rev. Fr. Francoise Hamel the
Director General and Fr. Rajaratnam first to Colombo and thereafter to Kandy
where theh inspected the land purchased for the IVD which consisted a small
house with four rooms and a small verandah. The roof sheeting’s were
damaged. It did not have enough facilities for the students to stay and get
trained it needed some urgent repairs. Bro. Soosaipillai Annamalai who was
then attached to the Bandarawela Catechetical centre in the Diocese of
Badulla was called in. He came and stayed at the Ampitiya Parish church with
Fr. Andren, OMI and completed the monor repairs to this house. It was at time
that Bro. Antony Joseph and Tony Gerai pursued their priestly studies staying
in the OMI Scholastics. These two, together with Bro. Anton Mariathas
extended their helping hand to Bro. Soosaipillai Annamalai in this repair work
as well as in other needs.
This year on 15th April that is on the day of the Tamil Sinhala New Year
Day the Regional Director Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar and Rev. Fr. Philip jointly
blessed this house. For the time being, these two and Bro. Soosaipillai
Annamalai moved into this house. As this house was not quiet sufficient for
the use of Voluntas Seminarians a new building was constructed attached to
this house a section of which was used as the kitchen and the other as the
Dining Room.
Soosaipillai Annamalai is a catechist too. He was trained as catechist
at the Catechetical Centre, Jaffna when he was at Muhamalai. Thereafter he
assited Rev. Fr. Nicholas, the parish priest of the church of Our Lady Refugee,
Jaffna (OLRChurch) in Catechetical work. It is a truth that even today the OLR
Parishioners gratefully think of the services rendered by Bro.Soosaipillai who
42
had won the heart of the people and helped the parish priest as though his
right hand who in-fact was all things to all men. After the displacement in 1995
he was in charge of the Catechetical Centre which had been temporarily
functioning at the holy shrine of Our Lady of Madhu in the diocese of Mannar
and rendered an excellent service among the displaced till 1998.
43
The Regional Director Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar was in charge of the
Tamil Unit of the Colombo Diocese Catechetical Centre. At the same time he
was serving as the Assistant Parish Priest of St. Joseph’s Church, Grand
Pass. A room in the Parish House was allotted to him. This room served as
his residence. It was in this that the IVD priests, the celibate men and the
Brothers used to stay happily with the feeling of one family when ever they
come over to Colombo. Fr. Director also helped every one of them with real
concerns towards them. We cannot also forget Rev. Fr. Julius and Rev. Fr.
Manokumar who served as parish priests during this period. Rev. Frs.
Augustine Fernando and Ananda Fernandopillai of the Colombo Arch diocese
are two great personalities who always give their support to the Voluntas and
are ever extending their helping hand towards us. It is not a lie.
When the war resumed in Muhamalai area in March 2000, March the
minor seminarian and I were at Parent Illam. Mr. Muthiah, principal of R.C.
School, Kilaly and Mster George were also with us. There was continued
artillery shelling here and there. This news reached Fr. Dunstan who was
staying at the health centre in Jaffna through Muttiah Master and George. He
wanted to come to our rescue. At once he joined with some others and set off
to Mirusuvil by car and motorcycle where they left the car and came by
motorcycle to Muhamalai. They picked us up by motorcycle via main road up
to Mirusuvil. From there we wee brought to the Jaffna health centre by car. Fr.
Dunstan went to Parent Illam Muhamalai with Fr. Dunstan the family of
Ratnayake the cook and some displaced people were also there, At this time
Rev. Fr. Augustine was the parish priest at Muhamalai. As the mission house
at pulopallai was comfortable and suited for mission work, he proffered to stay
there. Due to heavy shelling people there were under a difficult situation. Fr.
Dunstan was very helpful to Fr. Augustine in bringing out the people who were
caught up safely. They both did the needful first to bring out the patients, the
aged the pregnant women by speaking to the Army Commander.
Fr. Dunstan stayed at the Muhamalai Guest House and was engaged
in the public work. Once what happened was this: From the place where he
usually takes rest he went to see his cook Ratnayake. Within the time of just
three minute as Artillary shell had fallen just on the spot where he takes rest
and exploded with a thundering sound. Actually he had a narrow escape.
44
Thinking that it was no longer safe to stay at Muhamalai he acted fast. He
took all his things little by little in his motorcycle and kept them at a house at
Kilaly and went to the Health Centre in Jaffna in his motor cycle. From there
he went back to Kilaly in a motor car, loaded his things and arrived at our
Jaffna House. In this transport exercise he had to lose many of his belongings
nevertheless thanks God it was God’s Grace that he could safe his life.
Back to Thiruvady
45
happened. He was also motivated by the desire that the things we had left at
Thiruvady House. Should be redeemed somehow or other. His bullock cart
and our Institute car were there ready for the transport. Mr. Stanley brought a
car driver. When the gunfire sounds had ceased a while our boys went to
Thiruvady with Mr. Stanley and Mr. Navaratnam taking the car and the cart
with us, loaded the car and the cart with our bags and baggages and food
stuff and came back to the Claretian House at Chundikuli via the unusual
narrow lanes.
We stored up the valuable goods in the room already reserved for us at
the Bishop's House, Jaffna and retained with us only the things required for
our daily needs. I sincerely wish to thank our students of that time for the
efforts and interest shown in all these arduous exercises. They are Allen,
Deepan, Theenathayalan, Jemis, Ganesh and Velu - who were very helpful.
These students had gone to Thiruvady one by one and had brought
their suitcases. Before I met them they had made such visits many a time.
During one of such visits, the Army personnel on sentry at the Passyoor
junction which is just close to Thiruvady had some suspicion on
Theenathayalan, one of our students. They detained him inquiry and gave him
thorough beating while he was being checked, they found a holy rosary in his
trouser pocket. One of them must have been a catholic. So they pitied and
comforted him and dismissed him with the instruction not to come there
hereafter. This boy did not tell anyone about this incident. After a lapse of two
days only he narrated his experience showing the marks of injury on his back
caused by the beating. "If not for my Holy Rosary and that Catholic soldier, I'd
have been killed by now", he recalled with pain. We took care of him, gave
him some indigenous treatment and cured the wounds. Due to the tension
that prevailed we could not do any cooking as the necessary utensils were yet
to be brought. "Odiyal Pittu" and soup was the menu at the dining hall.
Normalcy returned thereafter. The father of this student was our cook. Staying
at the Claretian House also looked unsafe. Even the claretion community was
of that opinion. At this time we heard the thundering sound of an Artillery shell
46
exploding near the Jaffna Kachcheri. In the mean time Rev. Fr. Samistan
assist the parish priest at Gurunagar sent message to Fr. Dunstan who was in
Delft at that time and took us all to the Mission House at Gurunagar. The
participant Rev. Fr. himself gave us his support. While we were at Gurunagar,
Fr. Dunstan suspended his preaching at Delft and hurriedly came down to the
Mission House at Gurunagar with Master George.
Even at Gurunagar we could not stay long. An artillery shell fell at the
cemetery Junction behind the Cathedral and exploded killing five on the spot
and injuring many. Therefore people of Gurunagar also quit their houses bag
and baggage. Bidding good bye to the parish priest, we also set off in our car,
motorcycle, and bicycles laden with our goods and reached Aanaikottai via
Navanthurai Road. There we were received by our associate memjbers Mr. &
Mr. Selvaratnam and Mr. & Mrs. Guy de Fontgalland who welcomed and
treated us nicely. They also prepared lunch and served. Thereafter they took
us to a newly bought house called "Annai Illam". It was situated on the Jaffna-
Manippai road. It was bought for the sister of Mrs. Jeya Selvaratnam. They
were living in Germany. We were the first to occupy that house. So we
washed that house got it blessed by the Fathers and began our day to day life
in that house which consisted of three rooms, a big hall, kitchen and a large
parking garage. Though we did not have much facility there, at that desperate
hour that house for us was a paradise. As it was situated in a Hindu
environment, we acquired the friendship of the Hindu people as well.
"Where there is love and fellowship there is God" - so do we sing. As
Annai Illam had them in plenty everyone was full of joy. Twice a week had
Holy Mass celebrated. The associate members from Aanakottai and Jaffna
and the Seminarians all got together as one family and participated in that
Mass. At a time of crisis such as this where we had encountered general
losses, the love and affection shown by the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Anthonipillai
and the good Sgepherd Sisters were a real encouragement to us. Above all it
is no exaggeration the love and concern of our Regional director Rev. Fr.
47
Shanthikumar and his advice were the real source of our strength for us to
cope up that situation.
We got ourselves engaged in the endeavor of redeeming our goods,
books and furniture from Thiruvady Illam at Colubuthurai. For that matter
someone had to speak to the Army in Sinhala and make them understand the
situation.
During those days there were Good Shepherd Sisters at Aanaikottai
who helped us in various. One of those Rev. Sister Punitharani helped Fr.
Dunstan in this respect. She spoke to the Military commander of thiruvady
area and got permission to go to Thiruvady Illam. Because that area was
inaccessible to the public. Fr. Dunstan and Sister Punitharani arranged a
vehicle from Pandianthalvu, went there, loaded the vehicle with the remaining
furniture, books and other things with the help of some Army Soldiers and
brought them to the Annai Illam at Aanaikottai admist great difficulties.
The regional Director Fr. Shanthikumar paid a visit to the Annai Illam at
Aanaikottai. Few days later, the public were allowed to go to Columbuthurai
so we as a group consisting of the Regional Director, Fr. Dunstan, Mr.
Navaratnam and myself went to the Thiruvady Illam. It was verypainful to the
mind to see that some items such as doors, brass hinges and Brass window
bars were stolen. So immediately we got into action. We ourselves removed
the remaining doors, windows, wire mesh and gates, loaded into the same
vehicle we hired earlier, brought them and secured them at Annai Illam.
Events connected to the Voluntas commitment for this year place at the
Church of Our Lady of Refugee aanaikottai on 15.08.2000. Five families today
began their Aspirancy with willingness to join the Institute. A three days retreat
took place in order to prepare the members for this sacred event. The retreat
was preached by Rev. Fr. Louis Ponnaiah OMI who instilled an awareness in
the minds of the members using the experiences of the day to day life. It is
important to note here that during this same year several families from
Colombo and Mannar sectors began their Aspirancy. At the vocational
48
Exhibition conducted by the Jaffna Liturgical Centre at the Jaffna catechetical
Centre the IVD also took part and put up some exhibits. Some of our
associate members attended this and explained about the Institute, its vision
and its mission.
Institute Voluntas Dei also held membership in the Jaffna Diocese
Commission for priest and Religions and gave its contribution. Mr. Maricellin,
Mrs. Joicy Navaratnam and Fr. Anthony Joseph attended the commission
from time to time and took part in its programme. Rev. Fr. Anthonipillai, Parish
Priest of Aanaikottai had to retire from his parish work in pursuit of his higher
studies. Therefore Fr. Dunstan who carried out this responsibility in an
excellent mannar and won the love and appreciation of the people displaced
from Passayoor, Gurunagar and Columbuthurai. For this he had had to meet
the owners of five plots of land and get their permission. Having properly
completed everything, he got the people staying at the Aanaikottai OLR
Church premises settled in these temporary houses.
Dry rations were obtained from the above organization and distributed
to the poor. Our house "Annai Illam" too was congested and without much
facilities. Study hall, chapel and toilets were among the primary needs. A 60' x
25' temporary shed was put up in the front yard of Annai Illam. That shed
being divided into two, the front portion was used as the chapel and the rear
portion was used as the study hall. A toilet and a shed for the parking of
vehicles were put up at separate places. The owner of this house was quite
generous in granting permission for these infrastructures and cooperated with
his various helps.
At the same time we gratefully remember Rev. Fr. C. Jeyakumar, the
HUDEC Director for sanctioning this massive work programme. Not only that,
he also sent their engineer to inspect the site, got the required building
materials (sand, metal, cement, timber, roofing sheet etc) estimated and
supplied. We also got his help in the form of some furniture including table
and chairs for the study hall. All these took place in the year 2001.
49
Mr. Maricilin's Visit to Canada
It was the year 2000 when our Director General Rev. Fr. Francois
Hamel came to attend the Silver Jubilee celebrations of Parent Illam that Mr.
Maricellin (my-self) got a chance to meet him. He took Fr. Dunstan along with
him for help. The chat with him was joyful and fruitful. During the course of
this dialogue Fr. General had appreciated his (Mr. Maricellin's) services and
encouraged him. On that occasion Mr. Maricelline revealed his desire to
personally met Rev. Fr. Louis Marie Parent OMI our beloved Founder through
Fr. Dunstan without any objection, Fr General granted permission. I then
came down to Colombo to make ready my passport and visa. At this juncture I
wish to express my love and gratitude to the then Regional Director Rev. Fr.
Shanthikumar and Rev. Fr. Philip who were with me all the time taking turns to
assist me in completing all travel formalities. In Canada I stayed for one
month with Rev. Fr. Rajaratnam at the mission house of Bonifaces church. It
was on one of those days that I met our founder Rev. Fr. Louis Marie Parent,
OMI along with Fr. Rajaratnam and got his blessings. Also Fr. Rajartnam took
me to the Mother House where I met the director General and other members
of our Institute. I also met in Canada Rev. Fr. Patrick, Mr. Athiriyampillai and
few other friends. In Canada I visited some places of historical importance.
Thereafter I proceeded to England, Switzerland, Italy, France, Germany and
visited places of importance and places of pilgrimage. After about three
months I returned to Sri Lanka in mid August. At the Airport I was received by
our regional Director Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar and Rev. Fr. Dunstan.
The one day recollection was held as usual at Aanaikottai Annai Illam
with view to celebrate meaningfully the Easter and the Christmas festivals at
the respective period. The renewal of commitments and vows was also held
at Annai Illam on 15th August. Prior to these renewals, a three day retreat was
also held as a help towards this. Master Justus Fernando joined the Voluntas
as a new candidate. He studied English for few months under Farther Philip in
Kandy. Thereafter he came down to Annai Illam followed an English course
50
under Mr. Pakkiyanathar and Rev. Jesinthamaria and passed Entrance
Examination held by the Major Seminary. He started his aspirancy and in this
same year he began his pre-philosophy at the Major Seminary.
The Voluntas members took part in all the events that took place this
year and benefitted. The feast of the Voluntas too was celebrated in high
spirits. Friends and well wishers too join the Voluntas family in this
celebration. The Silver Jubilee of The Priestly Ordination of Rev. Fr. Philip
celebrated in Jaffna in low profile. Some classes on the topic "Easy way to
learn to English" were organized by Rev. Fr. Philip for the children of the
Associate Members. He also summoned the team leaders and taught them
the method of conducting meetings. It was in this year that the Voluntas got
their telephone connections after having taken much effort. A get-together of
the Voluntas priests, Major Seminarians and celibate men was organized at
the Catechetical Centre, Trincomalee by the Regional Director Rev. Fr.
Shanthikumar with the aim of studying about the Institute and discussing
extensively about the IVD Regional constitution Members rendered their co-
operation and took part in these events with great zeal and joy. Daily
Eucharistic celebrations and prayer services were held in a meaningful
manner. All these arrangements were excellently planned by Rev. Fr.
Shanthikumar.
Through the efforts made by The Regional Director Rev. Fr. Loid
Shanthikumar and Rev. Fr. Dunstan the IVD got a house named "Jopathy"
situated at henmulla kochchikade in 2001. Rev. Sr. Bonaventure (Bonny) HFC
and Rev. Sr. Celline, H.C was also very helpful in procuring this house which
belongs to Mr. Alfred Fernandopillai. This house served has the Minor
Seminary for the IVD. Facilities were provided in this house for the students to
stay and study.
Rev. Bros. anton Mariathas, Tony Gerai and Anthony Joseph who were
boarded at the OMI Scholastic-ate Ampitiya, Kandy were brought back to the
IVD house in 2001. From then onwards they resumed their priestly studies
with the formation typical of the IVD studies. There was a fountain well in our
51
Ampitiya land. Due to shortage of water in it application was made to Water
Supply and Drainage Board for supply of water. This supply was obtained on
15.03.2003. Thereafter, a barbed wire fence was constructed along the
boundary of our land with concrete posts in-between. The access road to our
house was also rehabilitated. A get-together was organized for the first time
which attended and enlivened by our Rev. Brothers, Associate members of
the Colombo sector and a former proprietors of this land. On Sundays and
days of obligation our Brothers would go to the parish church to take in the
liturgy. On week days we had our services at our house itself. Rt. Rev. Dr.
vianny Fenando, the Bishop of Kandy came to our house and blessed it. there
is a Buddhist Temple near our house. We maintained a good relationship with
the Rev. There who was in charge of that temple. Also we fostered a cordial
relationship with the Buddhist people living in the surrounding. This provides a
clear evidence for the building up of peace and brotherhood in Christ Jesus
which was the aim of our institute. The Buddhist monk would visit our house
and we too reciprocate in a bid to foster love surpassing the differences of
race, religion and language.
On 01.11.2001 Rev. Fr. Philip and Rev. Bro. Soosaipillai Annamalai
were officially appointed as Director, formation of Seminarians and Director
Administration of this house respectively. Master Chaminda Sanjeewaa new
(Sinhala) student was added to the community. He got through the Entrance
Examination held by the seminary and started his course of Philosophy.
Rev. Fr. Philip's silver Jubilee of Priestly Ordination and his Birthday
were commemorated on 18th August 2001. the members of the Colombo
Sector attended this function and took part in the celebration. During the same
period, Rev. Fr. Rajaratnam who paid a visit to our house, met everyone and
expressed his joy at the progress made by our house. Mr. Athiriyampillai, a
celibate member of our Institute who also arrived here from Montreal, Canada
presented us with large PVC water Tank as a remembrance of his visit.
A ceasefire agreement (CFA) was in the year 2002. As a result of it, the
A9 road was opened. Re. Fr. Dunstan and I travelled through that Road went
52
to Muhamalai obtained necessary permission from the Army and inspected
the church of Our Lady of Good Health and our Parent Illam. Both the church
and our two houses were found to be fully damaged and the furniture and
other things had been stolen. From Jaffna Rev. Fr. Dunstanwent to Canada
for higher studies. In place of him Rev. Fr. Sagayanathan was appointed as
the Jaffna Sector animator by the Regional Director. Fr. Sagayanathan came
to Annai Illam and took charge of his responsibility in November this year. The
members of the Jaffna sector all got together and honoured both Fr. Dunstan
and Fr. Sagayanathan with farewell and welcome respectively.
Residing at Aanaikottai Annai Illam Fr. Sagayanathar re-started the
renovation work of Thiruvady Illam. Fencing was done around the house, the
damaged house was rehabilitated; the required roofing whets and cement
were donated by Hon. T. Maheswaran, member of Parliament, Master
Frankdorf and Master Ferdinand, both from the Diocese of Mannar, were
accepted into the Institute as Voluntas students. They continued their studies
at St. Patrick's College, Jaffna. The annual retreats and the Voluntas feast
were held in due course of time. The Regional Director, Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar
attended and graced same of those events.
We extended our help for two days on Voluntary basis for the
preparation of the opening ceremony of the new building St. Theresa's
Convent. Our Seminarians and some of our associate members rendered
their help willingly and with pleasure I congratulate them.
In 2002 in Kandy
53
members, made a study on the land where our house is situated also visited
places of fame in Kandy and returned with full of joy.
54
Fr. Shanthikumar in training the students. Master Allen Varapragasam who
was studying at the Jaffna Minor Seminary was joined to the Jopathy Illam,
Negombo.
The conflict situation that began in Jaffna peninsula abated after a few
months. People started moving in Thiruvady area, Columbuthurai as well. But
cleverness of thieves was rife. The houses that were uninhabited were
robbed. We permitted two families that lost heir houses in the parish of
Columbuthurai to stay at Thiruvady House on the recommendation of their
Parish Priest on temporary basis. The decision in this regard was jointly taken
by the Regional Director Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar who was with us at that time
and me. We sent for the women heads of the two families who were to stay at
Thiruvady, namely, Mrs. Anushiya and Mrs. Pushpam and entrusted the
Thiruvady House. We gave them back the doors and windows which were
earlier removed and kept at Annai Illam for safe keeping and helped have
them filled at their proper places. It wsas at this time that Rev. Fr.
Sagayanathan who was staying at Annai Illam came with the students and
rehabilitated the house, land and fence. Facilities for the students to stay and
study were completed to some extent. In this year (2003) on Thaipongal day
the house warming was done with the Thaipongal celebration participated by
the associate members of the Jaffna Sector and the seminarians. As the
facilities were insufficient, we used the Annai Illam at Aanaikottai too.
Rev. Deacon Anton Mariathas was ordained a priest on 18 th February.
this year at OLR Church, Jaffna by His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas
Soundaranayagam, the Bishop of Jaffna at the recommendation of the
Regional Director Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar. The activities connected to this
event such as Church decorations, preparation of food, attending to the needs
of the invitees were excellently carried out by the IVD associate members of
the Jaffna Sector under the leadership of the Sector Animator. They also
55
sensibly took part in the liturgy. The large number of participants included the
Jaffna Diocese priests, nuns, friends; well-wishers IVD associate members
form Colombo, Jaffna and friends from Kochchikade, Thoppu and some
diocesan priests from Colombo. I feel very proud of Rev. Fr. Augustin
Fernando who came all the way from Colombo to take part in the event and
wished the new priests. Also it is a happy occurrence that Rev. Fr. Rajaratnam
too came from Canada to participate in this event and to chat renew his
relationship with his beloved friends. I thanked each and everyone of the
participants on this occasion. The parents and the relatives of the new priests
on account of the war situation and were staying in the Jaffna peninsula as
refugees. Therefore he has to offer his First Holy Mass at St. Anthony's
Church Manippay as thanks giving Mass in the company of his mother,
brother, sisters and relatives and friends. The parish priest of Manippay, Rev.
Fr. Benette, few other priests, the Regional Director, Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar,
IVD priests and IVD associate members took part in this event and gave
thanks and praise to God. The IVD Team meetings were duly held on the
specified days. In some instances the Regional Director also attended the
meeting and by sharing his thoughts he encouraged the members. The
members used to get together on 5 th Sunday of any month at a prescribed
place and decide on the work plan for the next three months and implement
same. The retreats and renewals of vows/ commitments for this year were
also duly held at their respective days.
After staying in Jaffna for few days that followed his ordination, Rev. Fr.
Anton Mariathas came to Jopathy Illam together with a student Master
Vijayathas. He took charge of the Minor Seminarians and gave them training
in conjunction with Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar. It was at this time that an idea
dawned that the IVD should buy a land here as it's own. The matter was
consulted with Rev. Fr. Bony OMI, the then Parish Priest. The idea got
materialized through the efforts made by Rev. Fr. Mariathas and by Rev. Fr.
Shanthikumar, the Regional Director.
56
Rev. Fr. Mariathas had been assisting the parish priest of Thoppu for a
few months both before and after his ordination, staying at "Jopathy". The
school going students continued to stay at Jopathy together with the Regional
Director Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar and Brother Godvin Camikllus. Those who
were to prepare for the Entrance Examination of the National Seminary,
Kandy were sent Voluntas house in Kandy.
In April this year the Rev. Fathers and Brothers who were staying here
went to different parishes for Lantern services. It was during this period that
coconut seedlings were planted at suitable points in the garden areas of our
house in Kandy. Rev. Bro. Soosaipilali Annamalai took forward this work
programme. For our one-week Easter programme we selected Kunchukulam -
my own village. The Voluntas priests, brothers and I went there and with the
permission of parish priest Rev. Fr. Desmond Culas, we spent three days
there during the course of which spiritual exercised including Holy Mass,
Liturgical services, Catechism and coir practices were performed. The
parishioners took part in them with enthusiasm and joy and benefited. While
we were there we received the news that Rt. Rev. Dt. Deogupillai the former
Bishop of Jaffna had passed away. So immediately from there we proceeded
to Jaffna, attended his funeral on 24 th April, 2003 and returned to Kandy. On
11th May we joined hands with the incumbent Buddhist monk in the Temple
near by repaired the access road to our area which was full of potholes right
through out.
On 20th July Rev. Fr. Dunstan sent some money from Canada, the
money he earned through his own effort. With that money we removed the
damaged tin sheets from the roof and replaced them with asbestos roofing
sheets. On 19th September two new young men namely Master Thomas and
Master Puemal arrived at our house to pursue their priestly studies. They
were sent by Fr. Gen. Francois Hamed from Laos. They were taught English
first at our Kandy House and thereafter at our Minor Seminary at Thoppu.
After sometime these two together with Masters Alan, Benedict, Anthony and
57
Devin came to Kandy Voluntas Seminary to learn English. Rev. Fr. Philip
conducted the necessary classes for them. As we faced severe water
shortage around this time, all these students had to return to Jopathy House
at Thoppu.
Those who went from Kandy joined the school students who were
already at Thoppu and pursued their studies. A new student, Master Jesuraj,
also came and joined them. At this time, as the leasing agreement of Jopathy
Illam expired we shifted our seminary to another house at Thoppu. Rev. Br.
Antony Joseph who completed his theology in Kandy was ordained a Deacon
in September 2003 by the Bishop of Jaffna along with his co-brothers who
studied with him in Jaffna. He was then sent to Madulseema Parish in the
Badulla Diocese to work as a Deacon with the Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Rohan
(Cleretion Priest) for six months. During this period the Voluntas family
comprising the regional director, Voluntas priest and celibate men went on a
picnic to Madulseema visited him and his work. We also met Rt. Rev. Dr.
Vincent Fernando, the Bishop of Badulla. The parish priest Rev. Fr. Rohan
warmly welcomed and treated us nicely.
58
IVD Minor Seminary at Thoppu and assisted Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar the
Regional Director.
During this part of the time Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar went to the
Philippines at the direction of Rev. Fr. Francois Hamel the Director General
and introduced to the Institute of Voluntas Dei there. I had mentioned earlier
that as the period of leasing of Jopathy Illam expired we got another house at
Thoppu. Certain minor repairs were done to that house. Rev. Fr. Antony
Joseph, Rev. Bro. Godwin Camillus attended to matters regarding formation
from there. The leasing tenure of this house was also for one year. Therefore
we shifted to another house at Thoppu. It was when we were staying at this
house that the construction work for the new house in the land purchased for
the IVD commenced. Also it was then that the three students Consalus,
Vinoth and Jesuraj from Mannar and Jennis and Frank of already had the
Minor Seminary in Jaffna came over to this house at Thoppu and pursued
their educational and spiritual exercises. This house was also leased for a
short term. Therefore having completed the building construction of our own
house to some extent we moved in there by March 2006.
Staying at the new house with Rev. Frs. and Bros. our students carried
on their educational and spiritual exercises while lending a hand to the
building and gardening work. They did their monthly retreat and daily spiritual
exercises. They also did arrangements for the Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament specially for IVD benefactors on April 1 st Friday of the month.
59
One Mr. Devasagayam a retired Police Officer, promising the he would
make a gift of plot of land owned by him at Chavakachcheri, took us to the site
for inspection. That land with an extent of about one Acre had two houses
within its bounds. He also gave us a sum of money to perimeter and repairing
the house. We started working on it. The students at Thiruvady made their
maximum contribution in these items of work. But, unfortunately, the two
families occupying those houses refused to vacate. So, on instructions from
the Regional Director, we gave up that plan with the settlement of account of
the expenses incurred.
60
Changes that took place in 2005
Upon his return Rev. Fr. Dunstan was appointed by the Regional
Director Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar, at the Director of Formation of Seminarians in
Kandy IVD Seminary. Rev. Fr. Philip who held that position earlier retired from
his responsibilities. Rev. Fr. Dunstan who took charge of his new responsibility
with effect from 16.01.2005 also took upon himself the post of Lecturer at the
National Seminary, Ampitiya, Kandy at the Same time. In the IVD members,
identified their needs gave them suitable advice and returned to Sri Lanka.
61
On 26th December, 2004 a great devastating Tsunami that shocked the
whole world was caused due to a severe earthquake that took place deep
down the Indian Ocean in Indonesia, one of the East Asian countries did not
spare our country too. The tidal waves of that Tsunami washed away most of
the villages along the Northern, Eastern and the Southern coastal belts of Sri
Lanka killing thousands of people and destroying their properties. The villages
such as Vettilaikerny and Kaddaikadu that make the home town of our IVD
priest Rev. Fr. Antony Joseph were also subjected to great destruction. A large
number of his close relatives had vanished. The survivors were rendered
homeless and refugees. On this occasion a meeting of the commission for
priests and religious personnel was held presided over by the Bishop of
Jaffna. At this meeting it was decided to help the affected. In that respect we
the Voluntas joining with the Apostolic Carmelite nuns to serve the people of
Pachchilaipalli (Thalayady Parish) supported by the HUDEC we did our job as
best as we could. Our Voluntas Rev. Fr. Sagayanathan was appointed as the
coordinator of this group by His Lordship. Rev. Fr. Anton Mariathas and Rev.
Bro. Godwin Camillus collected some aid the parishioners of their respective
places both in cash and kind, visited the affected people in the Northern
Region in person with the help of some of their parishioners and distributed
what they have collected. Rev. Fr. Antony Joseph also went to Jaffna from
Thoppu, met his relatives and comforted them with necessary help.
During this period Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar the Regional Director and
Rev. Fr. Dunstan had gone to the Philippines with the aim of initiating the
Institute Voluntas Dei there. As the appointed time for this venture had not
dawned, they returned home and went round inspecting the Tsunami affected
areas, met the affected in person sympathized with them and helped them
financially. Bro Soosaipillai Annamalai, Fr. Antony Joseph and I accompanied
them in this visit. It is significant to note here that Rev. Fr. Rajaratnam also
came from Canada, visited the affected places and people, met also the
Bishop of Jaffna and made a contribution of some fund before he returned.
Mr. Paul whom we fondly call "Paul Uncle" and who has been a long
time friend of IVD stayed in our house in Kandy for a period of about three
months. His exemplary way of living taught us some experience. During his
62
stay he also visited Mannar, Colombo and Jaffna. Rev. Fr. Christy Selvaraj
who was indisposed stayed here for some time and received treatment.
Thereafter he was transferred to some other place. During these days a
volley-ball court was put up for our brother to play.
63
the required sum of money was being sent from Canada from time to time. As
a result of this, within a period of about six months the construction part of the
building had all been completed. The facilities of Electricity and Telephone
were installed immediately. Water connections too were provided at the same
time.
Master Allen and Benedict who passed the Entrance held by the
National Seminary, Kandy came here to pursue their Philosophical Studies
from the Minor Seminary, Thoppu. Having accomplished his duties in Canada
Rev. Fr. Dunstan returned to Kandy. He and Bro. S. Annamalai have both
stood forward and did everything to get this construction completed
expeditiously. The REv. Brothers also did all what they could and gave their
fullest cooperation in a manner worthy of appreciation. Major vacation
programmes were prepared for the Brothers. According to this they had to
make a study of the Manual for the stage and to explain it to members in the
sectors of Colombo, Mananar and Jaffna. Rev. Fr. Anton Mariathas guided
them with the necessary arrangements in a manner that all sector animators
and others are benefitted by it. With the completion of these work
programmes the brothers were allowed to go on leave.
The decisions taken at the general workshop of 2004 were translated
into Tamil and distributed among the members. That report was studies
segment level and the outcome of it was reported to the Regional Director.
The Institute's feast, Retreat, renewals of vows/ commitments,
promotions to the next step and get-togethers have all been duly held during
this year.
The get-together and discussion for the priest's brothers and celibate
men took place at Thiruvady presided over by the Regional Director. The team
meetings and the district councilors meeting were also held at Thiruvady
presided over by the Regional Director.
The team meetings and the district councilors meeting were also held
at the respective please and time. The Annual Work Programme prepared and
issued by the Regional Director to the members was very helpful. I appreciate
the administrative efficiency of our Regional Director.
64
A meeting of the counselors of the Central Committee was held in
Canada in 2005. A proposal to upgrade Sri Lanka as a District in Formation
was placed befor the committee. the central committee counselor for East
Asis, Rev. Fr. Dunstan in concurrence with the Regional Director had been
holding meetings in the Sri Lankan Region at sectoral level at which the
Regional Director Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar was also present. These meetings
were presided over by the sector animators. In each meeting Rev. Fr. Dunstan
elaborated about the District-in-Formation, its qualifications, tasks,
responsibilities and duties which were ratified and adopted by the sectors of
Colombo and Mannar. Whereas, in Jaffna sector there was some confusion
which led to certain arguments. Therefore it was given time to review. These
meetings were held in 2005 and 2006. The Director General Rev. Fr. Francois
Hamel accompanied by Rev. Fr. Maruvough arrived from Canada in January
2006. This is their second visit. Also arrived with them was Rev. Fr.
Rajaratnam. A meeting was held at the Minor Seminary; Thoppu presided
over by the Regional Director and attended by the Voluntas priests, Brothers,
celibate men, Regional counselors Mr. Johnpillai and Mrs. Ponnammah
Johnpillai. Fr. General, Fr. Maruvough and Fr. Rajaratnam were also present.
Fr. General and Fr. Rajaratnam put forward their opinions from the depth for
their hearts with deep sentiments. Finally Fr. General put before Regional
counselor the option to be decided by them; whether the region in formation?
Or the District-in-formation? Accordingly the Board of Counselors met and
unanimously decided to take a vote on it. The votes were cast and counted.
More votes were in favour of District-in-formation. A report was submitted to
Fr. General on that basis.
65
Francois Hamel, the Director General declared it open according to the
indigenous cultural style. On this historic occasion the following were present.
His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Vianny Fernando, Bishop of Kandy, Rector of
Kandy National Seminary, Erudite lecturers of the seminary, Heads of
Religious orders, Rev. Fathers, Rev. Sisters, well wishers and construction
workers.
His Lordship Bishop Vianny Fernando blessed the house and declared
open the chapel within according to the rituals. It was followed by a small
prayer service. We felt extremely happy over the presence of our Director
General Rev. Fr. Francots Hamel and Rev. Fr, Maruvough came from Canada
to grace the occasion by their presence. We thank them from the bottom of
our heart.
The architect of this house Mr. Jude needs to be given due credit for
having completed the construction of this house as though working on his own
house. We can never forget his efficiency and commitment. We owe our
gratitude to him and his team.
The IVD Regional director Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar, Voluntas priests,
brothers and minor seminarians from Thoppu jointly hosted the guests and
invitees and treated who are to sit for the Major Seminary Entrance
Examination.
A one week retreat programme was conducted by Rev. Fr. Dunstan at
our old house for the sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Facilities were
provided for groups of people from Mannar and Jaffna who came to Kandy on
picnic to stay at our old house. During the days of their stay they went round
and enjoyed their sight seeing and returned with satisfaction.
A group consisting of about 65 Tamil and Sinhala boys and girls were
brought to our house from the parish of Gampola for confirmation camp. They
stayed here for three days and completed their camp successfully. Rev.
Fathers, Rev. Sisters and the Catechists prepared them.
The Lenten way of the Cross for the Religious Orders this year was
well conducted at this house. Rev. Fathers, Brothers and Sisters took part in it
in a prayerful manner and made it meaningful.
Masters Jesuraj and Thomas from the Thoppu Minor Seminary came
and joined the community here to pursue their Philosophy at the National
66
Seminary in the new Academic year 2006-2007. Rev. Brothers Vinoth and
Shabin who completed their priestly studies this year were ordained Deacons
by his Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Rayappu Joseph, Bishop of Manna tar St. Phillip
Neris Church, Thoppu after which they returned to their motherland, India.
Our beloved priest Rev. Fr. Rajaratnam came from Canada, visited and
went round this house, expressed his appreciation with pleasure and went
back.
Paul uncle, our special visitor from Canada visited this house for a
second time on 12th May 2006 and stayed here for a few months. Rev. Bro
Thompson from India also arrived on the same day with the permission of Fr.
General, Prior to this he pursued his priestly studies as a Voluntas in
Columbia, South America and had it completed. On 6 th March 2007 he was
ordained a Deacon by Rt. Re. Dr. Rayappu Joseph, the Bishop of Mannar at
our chapel in Kandy. A week long retreat preached by Rev. Fr. Anthonipillai of
the Jesuit order was held for our Voluntas priests.
Rev. Fr. Dunstan proceeded to India and Laos in his official capacity.
By way of discharging his duties he met the Voluntas priests in both countries
and returned home.
On 28th April, 2007 His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Louis Maris Ling, the one
and only Voluntas Bishop arrived here from Laos. It was on this day that Rev.
Fr. Deacon Thompson was ordained a priest by our Voluntas Bishop at the
church of Infant Jesus situated at Slave Island. On the following day Rev. Fr.
Thompson offered his first Holy Mass. His Lordship Bishop Ling, Voluntas
priests, brothers, celibate men and associate members joined the new priest
in thanking God for his mighty deeds. Some of Fr. Thompson's closer relatives
who had come from Kerala state in India also took part in these events. Mr.
Paul returned to his country. The new priest, Fr. Thompson stayed in Kandy
for some time and assisted the Regional Director.
Vinoth and Shabin who were ordained Deacons in Sri Lanka returned
to India, their motherland. They were ordained priests at their respective
Diocese in India. Two of our Voluntas priests and two celibate men attended
these events on behalf of the Region of Sri Lanka. A new vehicle was
purchased on 10th November 2006 for the use of our institute on leasing. This
lease is being settled in monthly installment.

After the term of Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar as Regional Director, Sri
Lanka, Rev. Fr. S. J. Dunstan took over as the new director on 1 st November,
2006. He carried out his duties stationed at our Kandy House. Therefore he
shifted his Regional Office from Thoppu to Kandy on 14.09.2007. On
27.09.2007 we also got down to Kandy the Minor seminary students who
were preparing themselves at Thoppu for the Kandy National Seminary
Entrance Examination in order to fulfill certain needs. They were
accommodated at our old house. Rev. Fr. Thompson took charge of them and
guided them.
Rev. Fr. Francois Hamel, the director General and Rev. Fr. Maruvough
were brought to the Jaffna sector by the then Regional Director Rev. Fr.
Shanthikumar. The members of the Jaffna sector got the opportunity to meet
and have dialogue with the General Team by Team, family by family and also
individually.
Mrs. Malar Savirimuttu of Mirusuvil who was ailing for some time
passed away on 29th January 2006. She and her family members loved and
supported the Institute Voluntas Dei since the Voluntas priests took over the
parish of Mirusuvil. Her eldest daughter is Joicy Navaratnam. Mr. and Mrs.
Navartnam were also our Associate members. It is significant to note that all
IVD members including the General, priests and members got together in
their house, paid their last respect to Malar Savarimuttu, the deceased IVD
member and prayed for the repose of her soul. Few days after, Rev. Fr.
Rajaratnam too visited their house and sympathized with them.
It must be said that during this period things did not go well with the
Jaffna sector of the IVD. As the sector Animator Rev. Fr. Antony Joseph had
gone to Colombo due to certain important work, the Regional Director Rev. Fr.
Shanthikumar went there and stayed for few days. Having completed some
work there he too had returned to Colombo.

Again some clsh had erupted on 11 th August with heavy shelling. Nine
students together with Bro. Eustace and Bro. George were with me at
Thiruvady. As a security measure, we obtained permission from Rev. Fr. Alfre,
the Cleretian Provincial (Kiruba) went to the Cleretion House at Chundikuli
and stayed there. We had also brought our belongings by our car. They too
had their food stuff. But our cook had gone to different places with their
families for security purposes. Jobs such as cooking and cleaning the house
were attended to by our students in turns. We also engaged ourselves in
Spiritual Exercises such as Holy Mass and Holy Rosary. In the morning we
would go to Thiruvady, spend the day hours in watering the garden and
cleaning the house. Curfew would be imposed in the evening before which we
had to finish the work, close the house and get back to the place where we
were residing. For a period of about one month we had been roaming about
like this. During our absence some thieves had got into both the houses
through the roof and robbed them of things including bicycle, electrical goods
and poultry birds worth of about Rupees one hundred thousand.
We communicated with the associated members and arranged for the
renewal of commit for this year and the promotion for the next step first at the
Cleretian House and that at St. Martin’s Seminary and completed with one
day recollection. Rev. Frs. Alfred (Kirupa), kirubaharan and Mathi helped us in
these events. At the same time we cannot forget the assistance rendered by
Rev. Fr. Arulraj, peter and Bro. Selva of Cleretian order.
When the situation had improved to some extent in October this year
we went to occupy our Thiruvady House once again. I requested Rev. Fr.
Mangalarasa, Rector of the Major Seminary to help us with daily Mass which
he compiled with real love and concern Accordingly, he and other priests
made it a point to come to Thiruvady taking turns every to offer Holy Mass at
6.15 a.m. amidst various difficulties and fulfilled our needs. Rev. Fathers of the
OMI order namely, S.J. Francis, Patrick Gnanapragasam and Ranjith also
helped us with generous gratitude. This situation continued till May 2007 with
a small break in between.
Rev. Fr. Antony Joseph was appointed as Assistant Parish Priest at St.
Lucia’s cathedral to take charge of the Tamil section. He replaced Rev. Fr.
Anton Mariathas who earlier held that position. It was very much a matter of
69
appreciation that Rev. Fr. Anton Mariathas, while serving at St. Lucias
Cathedral, also efficiently acted as the Animator for Mannar Sector. In the last
week of the month of May Rev. Fr. Anton Mariathas took charge of his new
responsibility at Thiruvady.
I took leave to go to my native village, stayed there meeting my
relatives and thereafter went to Kandy with the help of Bro Soosiapillai
Annamalai I got done some medical tests on me, obtained the required
medicines and stayed for a few days in Kandy. Thereafter, accompanied by
Bro. Tony Geravi, went to Negombo and Colombo met some Voluntas there
and then went to Thiruvady.
Rev. Fr. Anton Mariathas had properly conducted all activities
connected to this year’s Retreat, Renewal of commitment and Renewal of
vows. I too prepared myself and renewed my vows. During the same period,
Rev. Fr. Dunstan had gone to the Mannar Sector, prepared the members for
the renewal of their commitment / vows and promotion to their next steps and
returned to Kandy. So it had been in the Colombo Sector.
Rev. Fr. Anton Mariathas went ot Colombo and from there he went to
the Vanni and met our Associate Members namely, Mrs. Pushparani
Sebastianpillai, Mr. Uthayakumar and Mrs. Theresa Uthayakumar who were
totally cut off from the main IVD Family for a long time undergoing untold
hardships. The presence of Rev. Fr. Anton Mariathas gave them great relief
and comfort.
The renewal of the commitment of Mrs. Pushparani for this year and
the First commitment of Mr. Uthayakumar and Mrs. Theresa Uthayakumar
were properly done by Fr. Anton Mariathas. He then met the brothers and
sisters who were refugees there, gave them necessary help and came back to
Colombo, briefed to the Regional Director, Rev. Fr. Dunstan about his Vanni
visit and returned to Thiruvady.
An uncle of Bro. Tony Gerai fell ill in mid October, 2007 and went out
the Teaching Hospital, Jaffna for treatment. But there he suddenly died. Bro.
Tony came to Jaffna to attend the funeral. We took him to his our village, Point
Pedro and took part in the funeral. For a few days he stayed in the house of
his relatives because his parents and siblings all of them are living abroad. On
30th October he returned to Thoppu from Jaffna. At the invitation of Rev. Fr.
70
Dunstan, the Regional Director, I also came along with him. The next day, on
31st October 2007 Rev. Fr. Christy Selvaraj was brought and was joined with
us.
Bro. Tony Gerai joined St. Martin’s Seminary in his early teens and
studied at St. Patrick’s College. During the Rector-ship of Rev. Fr. Reggie
Rajeswaran at St. Martins he spoke to Rev. Fr. Philip who was the then
Regional Director of the Voluntas and joined the IVD in 1991. During this
particular period, we had been staying at a house at the Kachcheri Nallur
Road. Throgh the loving concern and untiring efforts of Rev. Fr. Philip he got
through the G.C.E. A/L examinations. He began his Philosophy at St. Fracis
Xavier’s Seminary in 1993. During the Mass Displacement in 1995 he
continued his studies at Kilinochchi and Madhu. He then pursued a course on
Psychology for one year at the Institute of Voluntas Dei. On his own he stayed
in a rented room at Mattakkuliya Colombo 15. There he got in touch with the
parents of some children and taught them English. He also maintained a good
relationship with them. It is a model for the Voluntas Life style as to how to live
amidst the people in the Secular context of Today’s world. Further during this
period he had also served as the Colombo Sector Animator. Hving been
invited by Rev. Fr. Dunstan, the Reginal Direcotr as the Administrator of the
House in Thoppu, Kochchidade, Negombo he was running it successfully.
Rev. Fr. Christy Selvaraj a student by the name of Sugith and my-self are
living in this house with him.

the Institute. Prayer cards and prayer books for the students were also printed
in English and issued to them.
A festival in commemoration of the 45 th Anniversary of the Institute
Voluntas Dei was colourfully celebrated at the Elphinston Hall Maradana
during his tenure. Cultural events prepared by the members were among the
special features of this celebration which was grand by this Lordship Rt. Rev.
Dr. Rayappu Joseph, Bishop of Mannar who was also the chief guest. A
souvenir to mark the 45 th Anniversary of the Institute was also released. Rev.
Fr. Shanthikumar celebrated the Silver Jubilee of his Priestly ordination by
offering a Thanks giving mass at the De la Salle House. The IVD members,
their friends and relatives along, with Rev. Frs. And Rev. Sisters attended this
mass and wished the Jubilariam ‘ad multos annes’. The mass was followed by
lunch. In addition to this, the members of the sectors in Colombo, Mannar and
Jaffna invited the Jubilarion to their respective sectors on different days and
felicitated him.
Annual retreat and Seminars for the Voluntas priests, Celibate men and
brothers were arranged at the Baticaloa Bishop’s House by the Regional
Director Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar. It lasted for about one week. The Liturgical
events were conducted on different themes on different days. It was really a
happy occasion that all the above Voluntas got together, took pertain all
events and revived the Institute spirit under the leadership of the Regional
Director.
The last day of the Retreat drew to and end with lot of sweet
memorable events such as Sea Bathing and Lunch hosted by Rev. Fr. Innasi,
the Parish Priest of the Batticaloa Cathedral. Our sincere thanks to his
Lordship and priests.
I had mentioned earlier that a land was purchased at Toppu,
Kochikade, Negombo to be owned by the IVD and a house was also
constructed in it. I was blessed and officially declared open by His Lordship
Rt. Rev. Dr. Marius Pieris the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Colombo
as the Regional Administrative House and Minor Seminary of the Institute
Voluntas Dei on 26th October 2006. Rev. Fr. Shanthikumar was in charge of
the Minor seminary until October 2007. It was here that the students were
prepared for the Entrance Examination conducted by the Kandy National
72
Seminary. These who were thus prepared sit that examination held every
year. Those who pass join our seminary in Kandy and read for philosophy and
Theology.
