Build your Reflexes.

Chapter One…
(One of them, of course)

Welcome to my dojo! My name is Mr. Lee. Mr. Correct Lee.

They call me that because I always speak English correctly. To speak
like me you need reflexes, and this is what I want to build in you:
reflexes.
Okay, let’s start the first lesson.

The First Lesson – Present Simple and its eternal problems: letter s and does.

The reflexes that you need:

1 – When you see “he”, or “she”, or “it”, you give the verb letter “s” (sometimes “es” or
even “ies”). E.g. He eats. She goes. It flies.
2 – When you see “does”, you take letter “s” (“es” or “ies”) from the verb. E.g. He does
not eat. She does not go. It does not fly. Does he eat? Does she go? Does it fly?
Question: Where does letter “s” go when “does” appear?
Answer: It goes to… “do” itself, and that is why “do” becomes “does”! Yes, it becomes
“does” because “s” is very good friends with “e”.

Exercise 193. Add letters “s”, “es” or “ies” whenever it is necessary and make sentences
in Present Simple. REMEMBER: do not add those letters if the subject is “I”, “you”,
“we” or “they”. See the models.
Models: Ken – teach Math ___Ken teaches Math___ ; Jane and Rudolph – dance every day.
___Jane and Rudolph dance every day.___
1. Bill – always forget his pens at home. _________________________________________
_____________________ 2. Nigel – take karate lessons. ___________________________
________________ 3. Mr. Mikimoto – give karate lessons. _________________________
________________________ 4. Grandpa – watch news every morning. _______________
_________________________________ 5. My sister and I – play chess in the evening.
__________________________________________________________ 6. You – do
grammar exercises every day. __________________________________________________
7. She – do physical exercises before she – have breakfast. ___________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
8. We – walk in the park when the spring – come. __________________________________
________________________ 9. Mom – fry fish twice a month. ______________________
______________________________ 10. That boxer – box many times a year. __________
___________________________________________ 11. I – ride my bicycle in summer.
___________________________________________________ 12. The shark – catch fish
and – eat them. ______________________________________________________________
13. Many people – go swimming in summer. ______________________________________
_____________________ 14. Roxane – cry every time she – fall down. _______________
__________________________________________________________________________
15. Bill – run very fast when his neighbor’s dogs – start chasing him. __________________
__________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________ 16. Tim and Kim – sleep 12 hours a day!
__________________________________________________________________________

1
I have an idea: let’s try a different reflex. My master, Never Wrong Lee, gave me
this fortune cookie. Read it, please, and then try to practice your reflexes.

For he, for she, for it, I guess,

In questions we use do-E-S,
But for I, we, they and for you
We don’t use “does”, but we use do.

So, you got that, didn’t you? In questions, we start the

question with does, which is do + e and s, but only for he,
she and it. For I, we, you and they we use do. Good luck!

Exercise 194. Turn all the sentences in Exercise 1 into questions. See the models below.
Models: (Ken teaches Math.) ___Does Ken teach Math?______
(Jane and Rudolph dance every day.) ___Do Jan and Rudolph dance every day?__

_______________________________ 19. Ricky studies guitar two hours a day. ________
____________________________________________ 20. Hellen likes to do grammar
exercises. __________________________________________________________________

IMPORTANT! Mr. Have does not want to sound haves or havies, and that is why he
invited his friend, Mr. Has, to make sentences with he, she and it, but only for
affirmative, because in questions and negative sentences do and have rule!

Exercise 196. Fill in the blank with have or has.

1. Jim ___________ two penguins, and his penguins ___________ black feathers.
2. My sister and I ______________ many toys to play with, and our parents ___________
many toys to… buy for us!

Exercise 197. Filling good? (Did you get it? Filling, from “fill in the blanks” instead of
feeling... Whatever!) Anyway, turn the sentences in Exercise 4 into negative sentences.
The first one is done for you.
The first one: ___Jim does not have two penguins, and the penguins do not have black
feathers.___

Exercise 198. Fill in the blanks with the right form of the verbs and then make
questions for every word or group of words for which you can possibly ask questions
(using what, where, when, why, how many etc.; I hope that you know what to do).
Remember:
- use “do” or “does” after what, where, when, why,
which, how, how, many, how much, whose and whom;
- do not use “do” or “does” after who (and, sometimes,
after whose).
(I am not a karate master, but I know grammar!)

1. Jim’s dinosaur _____________ (run) five kilometers every day.

2. Abigail _____________ (eat) five red apples every day, in the kitchen, because… she

always ______________ (prefer) comedies.
8. Jim ____________ (drink) two glasses of orange juice before he ________ (go) to school.

Let me help you with the questions for the first sentence. First, I write the word or the
words for which the question is intended, and then I write the question. Watch me do this!
1. Jim’s dinosaur – Who (or What) runs five kilometers every day? Jim’s – Whose dinosaur
runs five kilometers every day? runs – What does Jim’s dinosaur do? five – How many
kilometers does Jim’s dinosaur run? every day – How often does Jim’s dinosaur run?
Now, use your notebook and write down as many question as you can.

Exercise 199. If nothing works, then take 20 verbs and do as you see in the table below!
I write every day. Do I write every day? I do not (don’t) write every day.
You write every day. Do you write every day? You do not (don’t) write every day.

pass (the ball), to box, to sleep, to eat, to drink, to jump, to walk, to talk, to run, to stay, to
speak, to sing, to dance.
Now VS Every Day
or
Present Continuous (Progressive) VS Present Simple

Hello! How you are? I is fine, thank you. I train you have two new reflexes:
you see “now”, you be good student and use Present Continuous. You see the
adverbs below, you be good student and use Present Simple.
The adverbs below: every day/week/month/Christmas etc., once, twice, three
times a day/week/month etc., always, often, usually, sometimes, seldom (rarely),
never etc. (Me like “etc.” very many!) And, now, oss!

Exercise 201. Use your reflexes and fill in the blanks with “now” or “every day”,
depending on when the action takes place. You should use less than five seconds for
each sentence! Can you finish the exercise in 60 seconds? Try!
1. My classmates run and play football in the classroom ___________________

Exercise 202. Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verb, but be careful: in
many cases, the adverbs are missing! If you want to make sure that you are doing a
great job, read what the owl has to say to you.
REMEMBER! When the action is moving, it is Present Continuous:
Look, it is raining! I see Jack: he is playing on the slide.
When the action is not moving and we simply talk
about it, it is Present Simple: Cows eat grass. They do not eat meat.
The Earth goes round the sun. We love broccoli! (Really?!)

__________________ (to sing) inside her house, but today she _____________________ (to
sing) in front of her house, because their parents can’t take this any longer…

Exercise 203. Another useful reflex is to know when to use “do”/“does” and when to use
“to be” (am, are, is) to start a question. Anyway, never use “do” or “does” with V-ing. It
is just not nice! So, make questions for the underlined words or group of words. See the
model below the text, if you still need it. By the way, you’ll need a notebook.
Vanessa and Cindy are playing badminton in the backyard. They play badminton in
the backyard every day, because they love playing badminton. They have a very funny dog.
Their dog is having breakfast, now, in the kitchen. Ken, their brother, is eating one red apple
on the swing. He is not playing on the swing, now, but he usually plays on the swing three
hours a day. Yes, he loves playing on the swing! Their father is washing his blue car in the
front yard. He washes the blue car every day, but he washes the red car only twice a month.
Their mother is reading a book in the living room. She reads three books every month
because she is a teacher of literature.
Vanessa and Cindy: Who is playing badminton in the backyard? (Yes, we use the singular
form of the verb – is – even if we know that there are more children who are playing.)

6
They: Who plays badminton in the backyard? (If the question starts with “who”, we do not
need “do” or “does”.)
badminton: What do they play in the backyard, every day?
Exercise 204. Make sentences using the given words. See the model below.
Model: Mark – play chess – now. __Mark is playing chess, now.___

15) Some people – think – that the Earth is round. What a joke! _________
_____________________________________________________________

Exercise 205. Turn the sentences in Exercise 18 into questions. You can do this orally,
unless somebody tells you to write them down. In your notebook, I mean. See the
model.
Model to be seen: __Is mark playing chess, now?__
__Does that cat always steal food?__

Exercise 206. Give negative answers to the questions that you made in Exercise 19, and
then say something different. Orally or whatever. This time, you need to see the model!
The model which you need to see:
__No, Mark is not playing chess, now. He is playing cards.___
__No, that cat does not always steal food. Sometimes, it steals cars…___

Exercise 207. Let’s have some fun! There are 17 mistakes in the text below. All kinds of
mistakes, not only grammar mistakes. Find all of them. (Yeah, good luck with that!)

Emily it’s a very good girl. She always help his mother in the kitchen and she does her

bad every day. Four example, write know she is washes the dishes. She likes to washing the

dishes because she likes water. It is strange, doesn’t it? Hers brother don’t like to help in the

kitchen, but he like swimming in oceans. For example, at this moment he is swimming in the

7
Atlantic Ocean, in Hawaii. He sometimes like swimming in rivers, but most off the time you

can find he in the oceans and the seas of the world.

always negative not.
Last night, right after I ___________ (to turn) off the lights, I ____________ (to hear)
