TYPES OF ADMISSION ESSAYS

There are various types of essays that you need to write depending on the need of the
university and the course you are applying in. These essays are generally a part of the
university application process. The length of the admission essays varies from 300 words to
long documents of 1200 words each. But, this is not a standard rule that you have to follow
and the word limit can vary as per the needs of the university.

There are classified into 4 different essay categories defined by the word limit allotted to

LONG ANSWER QUESTIONS/ ESSAYS (Are more than 500

words and shorter than 800 words)

As the name suggests, you need to write some really long answers in this type of essay
writing. The words that you can answer in generally varies from 500 words to 800 words.
These types of essays are generally themed but you can also be asked to write this essay in
the form of an answer to the question for your Statement of Purpose. This essay type is in
most commonly used by the management schools around the world where you can be asked
to submit up to 2 essays answering 2 different questions.

To write this essays, you can be asked to write answers for -

◆ Given an opportunity to become another person, who would you be and

why?

◆ You are going up an elevator and get to meet the Mayor of your city, what
would you discuss with him/her?

◆ If you win $100,000 in a lottery, would you still go to work? Why?

◆ What qualities do you hold that we cannot find in any other candidate and

The above is just an example of what the university officials might ask you to write about.
Depending on the course you are applying in, you can also be asked to provide your

The purpose of this type of essay is to know your career progression, your strengths, your
weaknesses or anything that can help the university assess your skills.

The important point to remember here is that these questions are aimed to check your

◆ Be honest while writing the essay. Students copy the content from various blogs and
then twist it a bit suiting their needs.

◆ Try to write the essay in a narrative style as much as you can. Try to avoid any kind of
negative talk in the essay. This means that you do not have to write any rude, sexist,
communist, racist or personal remark in the essay.

◆ For essays where you have to write your views in response to an incident, divide the
words allotted in a 40-60 ratio. This means that use 40% of the word limit to only
explain the incident while remaining words are used to explain your viewpoint.

The one philosophy that I follow in my life is that life is a book and each day is a new page
which we can write on. The one thing that the human mind is most apt in doing is focusing
yourself as part of something bigger. I am not a lone wolf because I believe what we can
achieve being as one cannot be achieved alone. And I am a person who can mould herself
into any situation I am placed in. Please do not mistake this as me being manipulative. No, I
am like water, taking the shape of where I am placed.

Being born in a well-off family, I always got from my parents what I demanded. One can say
that it spoiled me, a lot. But that all changed 3 years ago when my father incurred heavy
losses in business. The loss was so severe that we had to liquidate a lot of our assets and had
to live like those who worked as caretakers at our place. My father and mother were trying
their best to still fulfil my demands but I was not a kid any longer, right? I knew and
understood what was happening. I realised that life is unpredictable and what we have right
now can be lost the next second. My mother had to sell off a lot of household items so that
we could buy some items of necessity. My phone was sold to some other person, something
I thought I could not survive without. But gradually I learnt that being adaptable is the key
and I started doing that. I adopted a new philosophy - when life gives you lemons, make
lemonade from them. Displaying an adaptable persona, I was able to focus on my academics
more than I used to. This adaptable quality was what dragged me through those dark days
and through the college.

When I entered college, I found a new life. I learnt a lot of things and being adaptive to the
situation, I quickly gained the good eyes of everyone. I have a thing of talking to people and
giving them advice, this skill was not left unnoticed by the college professors. After a brief
discussion, I applied for an internship in a nearby hospital for grief counselling. A lot of
college girls face molestation, eve-teasing and harassment in and around the college
environment and after my training, I was appointed as the student counsellor, a person
whom these girls could talk to. I was able to convince management to take action against a

FULL LENGTH ESSAYS (Are of 800 words or more)

The name says full length and that is quite obvious to know that these essays are of a long
length that can vary anywhere from 800 words to 1200 words. But this does not mean that
1200 words are the internationally accepted rule for writing these types of essays.
Depending on the need of the university, the length of these essays can go over 1200 words
as well. These essays are also most commonly referred to as Statement of Purpose.

In this essay type, you can either be asked a very specific question to answer as your
Statement of Purpose or maybe even given a question that is vague. Handling a Statement
of Purpose is slightly different than writing long question essays. Some key pointers that will
help you write the Statement of Purpose are -

◆ Your Statement of Purpose is not an autobiography or the story of a thriller movie.

When writing, do not waste your time in writing unnecessary information while waiting
for the reader to arrive at the main purpose of the document. Most of the students
start narrating their life story, their goals, their dreams, what do you want to do in life,
etc. Stating your ‘purpose’ right at the start saves a lot of time for everyone.

◆ Try to use quotes from spiritual leaders, political leaders, a celebrity, etc. But do not
excessively use them as they tend to use words as well. Using quotes, phrases and
proverbs add authority to your essay by giving it an artistic touch. But it is not
mandatory to use them. It is purely your own choice because it might happen that one
person likes reading quotes but the other just see it as a waste of words. There is no
universal law stating you have to use a quote at the beginning of the essay. You can also
use them to give a strong conclusion to the essay.

◆ Do not write like a robot. Plan strategically like you are going to war. Divide your entire
essay into smaller sections into paragraphs. Though some say to write equal
paragraphs, doing that is not possible always. This is a simple technique you can use to
write the Statement of Purpose but it is highly effective. Generally, Statement of
Purposes has 5 paragraphs that are of 200 to 250 words in length.

◆ Give special attention to grammar and punctuation. Take care that you are not making
any mistake like writing “great” as “gr8”. This is

strictly not acceptable in a Statement of Purpose. If need be, use your high school
English language grammar book to get the details.

◆ Writing big words and fancy vocabulary does not define your essay. If you are applying
to a technical course, then you are free to use technical terms that show your
knowledge. For example, you are applying for a master’s in thermodynamics, then you
can use terms like Rankine Cycle, Entropy, Carnot Cycle, Kinetic Theory of Gases, etc.
When you are using these terms, make sure that you use proper punctuation and use
italics to distinguish them in the essay.

◆ Choose a chronology to write your Statement of Purpose and stick to it through the
entire essay. Jumping from one topic to another is not a wise decision. For example, if
you started your journey from school and then discussed college, do not suddenly jump
back to school. The systematic flow of ideas allows a better understanding to the
readers.

◆ Division of the essay into smaller and shorter paragraphs allows it to be more cohesive
and becomes easy to read. The readers tend to get lost while reading long paragraphs.

◆ Talk about the turning points of your life. It doesn’t necessarily be success stories. You
can also use failures to define your story where you learnt something that you did not
before. But make sure that these stories are your real life incidents and that you are not
copying a motivational story from Billionaires Club on Facebook or some other
platform.

◆ Many students believe that talking about failures is not good and leaves them in a
negative eye but the truth is completely opposite of this. There are not many who know
and admit their mistakes. So, almost every other Statement of Purpose is filled with
self-boasting success stories. Amidst that, when your Statement of Purpose will talk
about failure and how you learnt from that and changes, the admission officials get
something different to read. Also, sharing your failures means you are being vulnerable

As long as I can remember, machines have been my friends. The science and mechanics
behind the operation of large whirring structures always fascinated me. And in my journey,
the science fiction movies acted as a catalyst. My mother often tells me of my stories of my
childhood, of how I would start opening anything I fancied with a screwdriver. I must have
lost them a significant monetary loss during those days. Fueled by the same desire to learn
machines and make them work, my undergraduate study was focussed on understanding
this at a deeper level. And continuing down the same path, I have realised that cars are my
love. I want to learn everything I can about these metallic beasts and play my part in giving
the world what it wants, eco-friendly supercars. This is the reason I am applying for the
Master of Engineering (International Automotive Engineering) at RMIT University.

As a research-driven and technology-based university, I believe that I will get the

environment I want in order to develop myself for the coming future. To become a pioneer
in the automobile industry of the future, engineers need to use contemporary engineering
methods and computational methods. This is what a reputable institute like RMIT can offer
to the students.

My bachelor’s course brought a lot of aspects of the mechanical world that I did not know
existed. I felt a foundation has been laid and started exploring the opportunities that came
with it. Studying mechanical engineering in my undergraduate study brought me face to face
with various areas like Design, Thermodynamics, Newtonian Mechanics, Automobile,
Computer Aided Design, Motion, etc. Over the course of 4 years, I learnt all these

design of the vehicle which adhered to the modification rules of the government. From here,
my passion started to grow stronger towards automotive.

During the final year of my undergraduate study, I joined SAE India, an affiliate of SAE
International, along with 25 other students from my institute. We registered for Supra SAE
(annual national championship organised by SAE India) for the 5th edition organised in the
year 2017. With the efforts of all the team members, we were able to secure the first place
in the virtual round in Rajasthan zone. After that, SAE India approved our design and allowed
us to manufacture our own formula student car. We worked with the previous years'
designs, studied the report of the universities and colleges who displayed exemplary
performance in previous years to see what we could learn from them. Not only that, but I
also tried to be a team member rather than being a senior, giving equal opportunity to
everyone for their inputs. We used to work for up to 18 hours in a single day building and
testing the prototype. One thing that most of the teams lack in is securing funding. Our
estimated cost of the final design was almost INR 1,59,000. With the help of the networks I
was able to secure over the years, our team received total funding of INR 1,25,000 and the

rest amount was contributed by the team members. But, our team was unable to secure the
minimum number of points through the initial testing rounds to be eligible for the ground
race. But I cherish the experience every single day and have the learnings still with me.

The Master of Engineering (International Automotive Engineering) at RMIT University is my

preferred academic study because of its balance between the automotive design and
manufacturing settings. Being a public research university, RMIT focuses on meeting the
needs of the global automotive industry. Hence, to develop myself for the leading role in
automotive engineering design, I believe, RMIT can give to me the required contemporary
engineering methods and computational and experimental tools competency. The course is
designed which allows me to specialise in either advanced automotive design and
development or automotive manufacturing, both of which are essential to the automotive
world of tomorrow. Not only that, I have learnt that RMIT University teaches the students
some advanced computer-aided engineering software such as LS-DYNA and Abaqus. With
my previous knowledge and this new-found skills, I will gain hands-on experience in several
state-of-the-art experimental facilities like Vehicle Wind Tunnel, Green Engines Research
Laboratory and Vehicle NVH Laboratory, all essential for a budding automotive professional
like me.

I need a program which focuses on the sustainable design and manufacturing practices
based on the entire life cycle (from 'cradle to grave') of vehicles. What I have learnt about
RMIT, I will be aware of the design for disposal and recycling, disassembly, life cycle
assessment, alternative fuels and powertrains and light structures. Hence, the Master of
Engineering (International Automotive Engineering) at RMIT University is the ideal place
where I would develop into the leader of tomorrow.

I am looking forward to my life-changing years at RMIT University. With the right blend of
expert guidance that I will get at the University and my self-motivation, I am confident of
achieving my life’s goal.
