5.0 METHOD OF EXAMINATION
5.1 Color contrast solvent removable penetrant system with non-aqueous
wet developer shall be used. Test materials i.e. penetrant, cleaning
agents and developer shall be from the same approved manufacturer.
The names of approved manufacturers are as per QP-002-1.
5.2 The batch certificates furnished by manufacturer of chemicals shall be
verified to ensure that Sulphur and Halogen contains are less than 1%
by weight.
6.0 SURFACE PREPARATION
Prior to liquid penetrant examination, the area of interest and the
adjacent surface area up to-at least 25 mm (1”) on the object shall be
cleaned thoroughly. In general satisfactory result may be obtained
when the surface of the part is in as weld, as rolled, as forged or as
cast condition, Surface preparation by grinding/machining may be
resorted to where surface irregularities could hide indications due to
discontinuities. The surface shall be dry and free of all dirt, grease,
lint, scale, welding flux, weld spatter, paint, oil and other extraneous
matter. Typical cleaning agent to be used shall be as mentioned in QP-
002-1.
7.0 DRYING AFTER SURFACE PRECLEANING
‘After application of cleaner and prior to application of penetrant, the
area to be examined shall be left for a minimum period of 2 minutes as
established for the evaporation of cleaning solution.
8.0 EXAMINATION
8.1 The temperature of the penetrant materials and the surface area of the
test part shall be be not less than 5°C and not greater than 52°C.PROCEDURE

Penetrant Application
The penetrant shall be applied by means of spraying using aerosol can.
On application of penetrant, the dwell time i.e. the minimum
penetration time shall be 10 minutes for welds, castings, rolled plates
and forgings.
Excess Penetrant Removal
On completion of dwell time excess penetrant from surface shall be
removed by wiping with lint free cloth until most traces of penetrant
have been removed. The remaining traces shall be removed by lightly
wiping the surface with lint free cloth moistened with solvent. To
minimize removal of the penetrant from the discontinuities, care shall
be taken to avoid use of excess solvent.
FLUSHING THE SURFACE WITH SOLVENT, FOLLOWING THE
APPLICATION OF PENETRANT AND PRIOR TO DEVELOPING IS
PROHIBITED.
Drying After Excess Penetrant Removal
‘The surface may be dried by normal evaporation or wiping with dry lint
free cloth, Maximum drying time shall be 5 minutes
Application Of Developer
Wet non-aqueous developer shall be used. After the removal of the
excessive penetrant and drying of the surface, the developer shall be
applied as soon as possible by spraying. Maximum time limit for
application of developer after removal of complete excess penetrant
shall be 5 minutes. The developer shall be applied in thin and uniform
layer. The drying of the developer shall be done by natural evaporation.
Developing time for final interpretation begins immediately as soon as
the wet developer coating is dry.PROCEDURE .

8.6 Visible Light Intensity
The intensity of visible light at the surface of the part / work piece
shall be minimum 100 foot-candles (1000 Lx) to ensure adequate
sensitivity during examination and evaluation of indications. The light
source, technique used, and light level verification shall be
demonstrated one time, documented, and maintained on file.
Light meter shall be calibrated at least once a year or whenever the
meter has been repaired. If the meter has not been in use for one year or
more, calibration shall be done before being used.
9.0 INTERPRETATION
9.1 Final interpretation shall be done not earlier than 10 min and
not later than 30 minutes after developer coating is dry. If the
surface to be examined is large enough to preclude complete
examination within prescribed and established time, the examination
shall be performed in increments.
9.2 With the developer forming a reasonable uniform white coating, surface
discontinuities are indicated by bleed out of the penetrant, which is a
deep red color that stains the developer. Indications with light pink
color may indicate excessive cleaning. Inadequate cleaning may leave
an excessive background making interpretation difficult.
10.0 EVALUATION
10.1Discontinuities at the surface will be indicated by bleed out of the
penetrant; however, localized surface irregularities due to machining
marks or other surface conditions may produce false indications.
Broad areas of pigmentation, which could mask indications of
discontinuities, are unacceptable and such areas shall be cleaned and
re-examined,
10.2An indication of imperfection may be larger than the imperfection that
causes it, however the size of the indication is the basis of acceptance
evaluation.PROCEDURE

10.3 Only indications with major dimensions greater than 1.5mm shall be
considered relevant.
10.4 Linear indications are those indications in which length is more than
three times the width.
10.5A rounded indication is one of circular or elliptical shape with the
Jength equal to or less than three times the width.
10.6Any questionable or doubtful indications shall be re-examined to
confitm whether or not they are relevant.
11.0 ACCEPTANCE STANDARD
(As per ASME Section VIII Division-1, Appendix-8)
All surface examined shall be free of:
* Relevant linear indication.
* Relevant rounded indication greater than 5.0mm.
* Four or more relevant rounded indications in a line separated by
1,5 mm or less (edge to edge).
When PT is carried out as per section IX , then acceptance criteria
of section IX will be applicable.
12.0 REPORTING
Interpretation and evaluation shall be reported as per QP-002-III.
Rejectable indications shall be recorded. As a minimum, the type of
indications (linear or rounded), location and extent (length or diameter
or aligned) shall be recorded.
13.0 REPAIR REQUIREMENTS
13.1 Any indication, which is believed to be non-relevant, shall be regarded
as an imperfection unless it is shown by re-examination by the same
method or by the use of other nondestructive methods or by surface
conditioning, that no unacceptable imperfection is present.
13.2Un-acceptable imperfections shall be repaired and re-examination
made to assure complete removal. When an imperfection is repaired byPROCEDURE

chipping or grinding and subsequent repair by welding is not required,
the excavated area shall be merged with the surrounding surface so as
to avoid sharp notches, crevices or corners.
13.3Where welding is required after removal of an imperfection, the area
shall be cleaned and examined by suitable methods to ensure the
removal of the imperfection and welding performed in accordance with
qualified welding procedure.
13.4After repairs, the repaired areas shall be blended into the surrounding
surface so as to avoid sharp notches, crevices or corners and re-
examined by the liquid penetrant method and by all other methods of
examination that were originally required for the affected area, except
that, when the depth of repair is less than the radiographic sensitivity
required, radiography may be omitted.
14.0 POST EXAMINATION CLEANING
The examination surface shall be wiped clean using cloth/cotton with
solvent rinse.
15.0 SAFETY
As the penetrant materials are inflammable, care shall be taken to
ensure that they are not brought near open flames. Examination shall
be done in ventilated area.
