Dry Friction Exercises

This document contains 7 problems about dry friction exercises: 1) Calculating the friction force on a 50 kg crate given a coefficient of 0.3. 2) Finding the minimum horizontal and downward forces to start motion on a 400 lb block with a coefficient of 0.4. 3) Determining the greatest height a parallel force can be applied to a block on an incline without slipping, given a coefficient of 0.3. 4) Finding the minimum horizontal force to prevent a 50 kg crate from sliding down a plane with a coefficient of 0.25.

Dry Friction Exercises:

1. If, determine the friction developed between the 50-kg crate and the ground. The coefficient
of static friction between the crate and the ground is 0.3.
2. A 400 lb block is resting on a rough horizontal surface for which the coefficient of the friction
is 0.40. Determine the force P required to cause motion to impend if applied to the block (a)
horizontally (b) downward at 30o with the horizontal. (c) What minimum force is required to
start motion?
3. A homogeneous block of weight W rests upon the incline shown in the figure. If the coefficient of
friction is 0.30, determine the greatest height h at which a force P parallel to the incline may be
applied so that the block will slide up the incline without tripping over
4. Determine the minimum horizontal force P required to hold the crate from sliding down the
plane. The crate has a mass of 50 kg and the coefficient of static friction between the crate
and the plane is 0.25.
5. Find the least value of P required to cause the system of blocks shown in Fig. P-5 to have
impending motion to the left. The coefficient of friction under each block is 0.20.
6. The uniform crate shown in the figure below has a mass of 20 kg. If a force P=80 N is
applied to the crate, determine if it remains in equilibrium. The coefficient of static friction is
µS= 0.3
