Newspaper, publication usually issued on a daily or weekly basis, the main function of which is to
report news. Many newspapers also furnish special information to readers, such as weather reports,
television schedules, and listings of stock prices. They provide commentary on politics, economics,
and arts and culture, and sometimes include entertainment features, such as comics and crossword
puzzles. In nearly all cases and in varying degrees, newspapers depend on commercial advertising
for their income. It is one of the reliable sources of news and information. Its goals are to inform
the public of the latest happenings in almost everywhere and develop public opinion. And it must
maintain its sense of fairness, accuracy, and truthfulness in narrating the stories at all times.
News section- the essence of the newspaper. It is found in the first pages of the newspaper. The
front page is intended for significant news stories from local community, national and international
scenes. News stories should have a lead that answers questions who, what, where, when, why, and
how.
Photojournalism- form of journalism that tells new stories through images. It should maintain its
sense of timeliness, objectivity, and narrativity.
Opinion section- contains editorial stories which report or tackle issues that concern the public or
communities in an objective and unbiased manner. Also includes a letter to the editor and editorial
cartoons
.
Sport section- features local, national, and international news and information on sport events.
Entertainment section- offers featured articles that emphasize the various aspects of culture. It
includes film, music, arts, fashion, and food. Also contain comic strips, columns on advice, and
horoscope
.
Classified or Classified Ads section- contains advertisements on services, job opportunities and
bidding.
With the birth of new media, the newspapers is still to be the medium of the mass because of its
availability and affordability. Thus, many people are still reading and relying on newspapers in
terms of news and information, entertainment, and education.
