    and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm.

    Directions: Answer the following questions below on the lines provided.

    SOAPSTONES:

    1. Who is the speaker of the poem? What does the writing say about the
    speaker?

    2. What is the occasion of the poem? What is the time and place of the piece?

    3. Who is the audience for this poem? Who did the writer have in mind and why?

    4. What is the purpose of this piece? What are we supposed to think about?

    5. Who or what is the subject of the poem?

    6. What is the tone of the poem? What is the attitude of the author toward the
    subject? What are the feelings expressed by the author about the subject?

    7. What is the author’s style? What types of language and specific diction does
    the writer use? What types of literary devices?
