EE 370 Electronic Instrument Assignment 3

1. A wire used in a small galvanometer is 0.1 mm in diameter, arranged as shown in figure 1. It is made of
phosphor bronze for which the modulus of rigidity is 40 GN/m 2. Calculate the torsional constant and
maximum allowable torque if the stress is limited to 100MN/ m 2. The moment of inertia for a round
wire is ( / 32)d 4 , where d is the diameter of wire.
2. Design an Aryton shunt to provide an ammeter with the ranges of 1A, 5A and 10A for a meter
movement having internal resistance 50  and full scale deflection current 1 mA.
3. A series type ohmmeter design to operate with a 6V battery. The meter movement has an internal
resistance of 2000  and requires a current of 100 A for full scale deflection. The value of R 1 is 49
K  . (a) Assuming the battery voltage has fallen to 5.9 V, calculate the value of R 2 required to zero the
meter. (b) Under the condition mentioned in part (a), an unknown resistor is connected to the meter
causing a 60 percent meter deflection. Calculate the value of unknown resistance.
4. Let us consider a shunt type ohmmeter which uses a 10mA basic d’Arsonval movement with an
internal resistance 5  . The battery voltage is 3V. It is desired to modify the circuit by adding an
appropriate resistor Rsh across the movement, so that the instrument will indicate 0.5  at the midpoint
scale. Calculate the value of shunt resistor, R sh; (b) Value of the current limiting resistor R1.
5. Find the steady state deflection of moving coil galvanometer in degrees and in mm on a scale placed
1m away when a current of 1 mA is passed through its coil. Also calculate the resistance required for
critical damping if the galvanometer has a relative damping of 0.1 on open circuit. The data of the
galvanometer is : Dimension of the coil = 25x20mm, number of turns=100, flux density = 0.1 Wb/m 2,
inertia constant = 0.1x10-6Kg-m2 and control constant =25x10-6 Nm/rad.
6. A d’Arsonval galvanometer has the following data: Flux density=8x10 -3 Wb/m2, number of turn =300,
length of coil=15mm, width of coil =30mm, spring constant =2.5x10 -9Nm/rad, moment of inertia
10x10-9 kg-m2, damping constant =2x10-9Nm/rad-s-1, resistance of the coil =80  . Calculate (a) the
deflection of the galvanometer for a current of 1 A , (b) current sensitivity in mm/ A if the scale is
kept 1m away from the mirror. Also find (c) natural frequency of oscillations (d) frequency of damped
oscillation, (e) first maximum deflection and (f) external resistance required for critical damping.
7. The torsional constant of a galvanometer is 5x10 -6 Nm/rad. Calculate the energy stored in the
suspension when it has been twisted through 0.4 rad. The moment of inertia of the coil is 0.2x10 -6 Kg-
m2. Calculate the angular velocity which the coil will have when it passes through its equilibrium point.
Neglect the damping due to air.
8. The inductance of the moving iron is given by L  ( 200  40  4 2   3 ) H . Where  is the
deflection in radian from zero position. The spring constant is 12x10 -6Nm/rad. Estimate the deflection
for a current of 5A.
9. Calculate the reading that would be observed on (a) a moving coil ammeter (b) moving iron ammeter
when it is measuring the current as shown in figure 2.
10. Write a brief article on Ballistic galvanometer.
