Age: 19 years old Gender: Female Nationality: American INTERVIEW QUESTIONS Question 1: How do you feel about your second language in terms of your perspective to people or cultures? Answer: How I feel about my second language. It’s like I don’t hate it and I don’t love it. Umm, in terms of people, it’s okay, like it’s easier to communicate when you have a second language, when you understand both languages, and it like gives you a deeper meaning, like a deeper understanding as well. Question 2: Why did you have Filipino as a second language? Answer: Well, cuz also I’m, well, obviously I’m Filipino but umm, let’s see, it’s easier to talk with my family who live here or yung mga family ko na don’t speak English well so, I tend to use tagalog with them so, it’s easier to like communicate with other people who have the same language, there’s no, because there’s always a language barrier when you don’t understand a second language, you know what I mean? Question 3: How important to you is that second language and why? Answer: It’s I guess, I mean, I guess it’s important because also as I said before, it’s easier to communicate, it decreases the language barrier that you have with that other person, and like, since you, when you have two different languages, you are able to understand things in two different ways. Like for example, if I watch a teleserye, or a movie in English, I am able to understand it like oh! If you translate to this way you can understand in this word, or you go to this one, or you could, Filipino movies too, if they say it, I understand it, but there’s also moments where I randomly just aren’t able to, unable to like translate it in English in my head but here in tagalog. Question 4: How did you learn that second language? Answer: I learned it through at home, teleserye, and like I also studied here for one year before now so, I was able, cuz when I was here at first, I didn’t understand it completely, it was more I could just like, I understood it, but I could never speak it, but then, when I learned it, I was able to converse with the people here and it was like kinda like there’s living words, knowing a few words, like oh! Using context clues for example like umm yung kumain ka na? Like I understand it like oh! That means time to eat, like just learning from like social cues from my parents and through environment wise. Question 5: What do you love or like about that second language? Answer: Umm, what I like about? I mean there’s nothing to love so like, I mean it’s a mutual feeling. Umm, being able to like understand like it’s like also like the way. Ano yun? What do I like about this language? Just communicating in it, being able to communicate with other people in that language and umm, the fact that I can use it anywhere and you know.
