The Relationship of Level of Self-Esteem and The Social Interaction of Students and Teachers in Class

This document discusses a study that examined the relationship between students' self-esteem levels and their social interaction with teachers in class. The study used a survey to measure the self-esteem levels and perceptions of teacher interactions for 105 high school students. It found that most students had normal self-esteem levels, with a minority experiencing low or high self-esteem. It also found that 43% reported positive interactions with teachers, while 22% reported negative interactions. Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between higher self-esteem and positive social interactions with teachers in class.

The Relationship of Level of Self-Esteem and the

Social Interaction of Students
and Teachers in Class

High level of self-esteem of students plays an important role in academic

achievement, social interaction and personal responsibility. Self-esteem is your overall

opinion of yourself – how you feel about your abilities and limitations. When you have

healthy self-esteem, you feel good about yourself and see yourself as deserving the

respect of others. When you have low self-esteem, you put little value on your opinions

and ideas. And teachers with positive interaction with their students build a classroom

environment where they help to learn and meet students developmental in emotional

and educational needs. Teaching is a profession that demands large amount of time

dedicating personal interaction. Leinhart et. al and Weinstein et. al hypothesized that

certain teacher-student interaction pattern(typically associated with high achieving

students) were likely to produce students with task intrinsic motivation, while other

interaction pattern (frequently associated with low achieving students) would lead to the

less functional behaviour of students working for teacher approval. Firestone, Lean

(2019) characterized low self-esteem by a lack of confidence and thinking severely

towards self. Often people with low self-esteem feel unlovable, awkward or

incompetent. While High self-esteem people are more interested with their own

business and don’t meddle with others’ affairs. People with high self-esteem believe and

aim themselves to succeed (Lifehack). The purpose of this scientific report is to classify
the relationship of level of self-esteem of students with their interaction with teachers;

and to identify if there is a positive or negative relationship between students and

teachers during class.

This scientific report used descriptive research design to find out the relationship

of level of self-esteem of students and how they interact with teachers during class.

According to Kon and Owen (2019) Descriptive research design is a study of status and

is widely used in education, nutrition, epidemiology and the behavioral sciences. The

respondents of this study was the senior high school students of Lumil National High

School where 142 is the total population of Senior High School students, specifically the

grade 12 and the 105 is the sample population. The data was gathered during the free

time of students and a close-ended questionnaire was given to them. After finishing

gathering data, the researcher used Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and Spearman rho

as a statistical treatment to find out if there is a significant relationship between level of

self-esteem of students and their social interaction with teachers during class.

According to the gathered data, out of 105 Grade 12 Senior High School

students 22 were experiencing a problematic/low self-esteem, 81 were under normal

level of self-esteem and 2 experience high level of self-esteem.43% of the Grade 12

students indicates a positive relationship with their teachers, while 22% indicates a

negative relationship of students with their teachers during class. Therefore the

researcher concluded that most of the grade 12 students have a positive relationship

with their teachers. The result in determining the relationship between level of self-

esteem and the social interaction of students with their teachers during class shows a
positive relationship were it means that there is significant relationship between level of

self-esteem and the social interaction of teachers.

After interpreting the data, the researchers find out that there is a significant

relationship between level of self-esteem and social interaction of students with

teachers during class. 43% of students from Grade 12 indicate a positive relationship

with their teachers during class while 22% of students show a negative relationship with

their teachers during class.
