    “MINDANAO”

    The latest picture from Brillante Mendoza juggles the story of a mother caring for a child dying of
    aggressive brain cancer with that of the child’s father, a soldier in active civil combat fighting against
    rebel forces. The two strands are linked by an animated rendering of the child’s favorite story; the
    myth of the brothers Rajah and Sulayman, who fight against the dragons Ginto and Pula. It’s a film
    which appears to be using both the dying kids and the dragon myth to emphasise a point about the
    malignancy of conflict within Filipino society. But the approach is a blunt weapon wielded blindly,
    which fails to connect with its target.

    “CULLION”
    Directed by Alvin Yapan and written by Ricky Lee, “Culion” is set in the 1940s and follows the story of
    three leper patients Anna (Iza Calzado), Doris (Jasmine Curtis-Smith), and Ditas (Meryll Soriano).

    “Anna never loses hope that soon a cure will be found, even when her baby is taken away from her.
    Doris believes in the myth that a beautiful diwata will soon heal the place. Ditas keeps attempting to
    kill herself, helpless against the onslaught of memories from the outside world.

    “Together the three friends try to negotiate a life of stigma that seesaws between hope and despair,
    redefining their roles as women, mother, friend, and human being. In the end they prove that neither
    disease nor death can erase their humanity and their capacity to endure,” the film’s synopsis reads.

    Culion used to be a leprosarium starting in 1906 under the American regime. Although leprosy on the
    island had been contained in the 1980s, it was only in 2006 when it was declared a leprosy-free area
    by the World Health Organization.

    STAR WARS 9

    The surviving Resistance faces the First Order once more as Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron's
    journey continues. With the power and knowledge of generations behind them, the final battle
    commences.
