Movie Review
- I’m not into this kind of movie, however, having two celebrated actors of
Philippine cinema in an indie film is quite a feat, and it should not be missed.
I’m expecting a heavy drama, but it was not, it surprisingly light and funny. The
use of purgatory or “The Middle” to achieve the depth story is very creative.
Undoubtedly the acting of Eddie Garcia and Gina Parreno is impeccable. I
enjoyed watching this film, though it has a simple story of fantasy, it was filled
with truthful lessons of reality.
- The turning point in the movie is when the two main character traces their
accounts back when they were alive through the television. It clears up many
questions and regrets that they have in their relationship. This part also brought
the characters closer to each other again.
3. How would you describe the main characters? What are their goals? What
problems do they face?
- There are two main characters in the film. Lisang, the female protagonist played
by Gina Parreno had a bad temper and intentionally creates havoc in “the
Middle” to delay her way to heaven. Manolo, the male protagonist played by
Eddie Garcia has a calm personality but blames Lisang for their obvious
breakup. They are both are old people that reminiscing their regrets and broken
promises for each other. They are both looking for a ways to have a proper
closure and answer to their “what ifs”.
- For me, the theme of the movie is ‘second chances”. In the movie, Lisang is
trying to fulfil her promise to wait for Manolo again which she failed to do back
when they are alive. Also, the two character share the same memory of their
postponed love story and they are up to rekindled their relationship for the
second time around.
5. What is the view of reality? Is there any place for God or other spiritual dimension
to life?
- Yes, there is a place for God or other spiritual dimension to life. We believed
that through God and spiritual dimension, we can connect with our deceased
love ones, and they back to us. As the film progresses, it shows Manolo visiting
his daughter who are still in the process of moving on for his sudden death.
6. What does the film say about the nature of human beings?
- The film discusses that human being are naturally flawed, we often do mistakes
and bad decisions in life but there’s always a chance to keep up and make
things right again.
7. How is the image of God within human beings seen in this film?
- For me, a righteous image of God is seen on this film. He is righteous in saving
sinners, as well as merciful and compassionate.
8. What do human beings need more in life? What do humans need in order to
flourish?
- For me, what human beings need more in life is peace of mind. The inner calm
and peace is very important because if we have this in ourselves we can give
and share more to others, we can love unconditionally, we worry less, we
accept easily, you can be true to yourself, and you always see things positively.
- We are not perfect, we all do at some point make mistakes and bad decisions
in life. But we are always given a chance to redeem ourselves and make
everything’s right.
- It’s never too late. We can accomplish anything no matter what our age is as
long as we have a willpower and willingness. Just like Manolo and Lisang who
find their way to make things happen even in the afterlife.
