INTRODUCTION
NMIM functions as reference standard laboratory that provides trace ability to the SI
unit for mass (weight), length, time, resistance, voltage and density under the National
Measurement Systems Act 2007. SIRIM Industrial Research developmental under
Corporatisation Agreement 1996 involve in industrial research, process improvement and
product development and enhancement. More than 1800 units of Physical Standards and
Chemical Certified Reference Material (CRMs) have been established and maintained at
NMIM.
Gas Group in Chemical Metrology Section was equipped with Gas Chromatograph for
Gas analysis with various type of detectors such as:
i. GC-FID (Gas Chromatography-Flame Ionization Detector)
ii. GC-SCD (Gas Chromatography- Sulfur Chemilumisnescence Detector)
iii. GC-TCD (Gas Chromatography-Thermal conductivity Detector)
iv. GC-ECD (Gas Chromatography-Electron Capture Detector)
v. GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass spectrometry)
vi. GC-PDHID (Gas Chromatography-Pulsed discharged helium ionization Detector).
The laboratory in the university does not have many types of detector, this provide
new approach towards other type of equipment that been used by NMIM as an ideal tool
to analyse gas samples and enabling the end users to determine the amount of different
gaseous in a gas mixture. The student also has been introduced to Gas analyzers that been
use to detect a specific type of gas and its’ concentration.
Figure 1: GC-PDHID (Gas Chromatography-Pulsed discharged helium ionization
Detector).
There are also Calibration lab that calibrate instrument from organization to make
sure that the instrument are in good condition and give an accurate result of measurement.
The student are able to see the evidential breath analyzer that had been send by police to
trace blood alcohol content. NMIM preparing the ethanol standard solution eange of 40
mg/100 mL to 80 mg/100 mL as standard for calibrating and verifying breath alcohol
analyser. The standard solution prepared gravimetrically and confirmed concentration by
GC-FID using non-IDMS exact matching method. Therefore, the student can relate the
important of calibration to ensure the quality of the results.
At the Surface laboratory, the student learned about alternative method for analysis
of precious metal with non destructive technique for application where the integrity of the
sample need to be maintained for example gold. NMIM use Energy Dispersive X-ray
Fluorescence (EDXRF) to provides accurate and high precision quantitative for
determination of total element in the sample. The purity of the gold also can be determine
by its density to provide fair trade when buying a gold and prevent any loss towards both
sides.
In other laboratory, the amount of water content in paddy was calibrate using
Moisture Meter. The preferred moisture content in paddy is in the range of 6-14 (%), if
the moisture content is too high this can cause the paddy cannot withstands more than a
week since there is presence of fungus and deterioration and if the moisture content is too
low the paddy cannot maintain its shape and broken so this can lead to low quality that
can cause the price drop. Fair trade can be made between farmer and buyer by measuring
the moisture content. The quality of the rice depend on the moisture contents of paddy in
the beginning to ensure the quality rice production later that differentiate its price in
marketing.
Next in the pH measurement lab, equipment of High Accurate pH Meter System was
used to identify pH contents. The primary standard solution are taken from Japan. The pH
measurement of drinking water has been measured by NMIM. The student had been told
that consume a right pH of drinking water is important to ensure smooth process of
systems in the body and the pH body of a person can drop when they catch a cold. From
this lab we know that if our body is in acidic condition, consume alkaline water does not
made the pH of the body become neutral.
Lastly the student are introduced to thermophysical, a video about the calibration for
instrument used to identify viscosity, density, resistance thermometry, radiation
thermometry, thermophysical properties and thermocouple thermometry. There exhibition
of various type of thermometer was displayed such as a thermometer that specific for
food to make sure that inside of the food are fully cooked, this is a great approach since
the student are often used to mercury thermometer. Instrument to measure viscosity that
is Capillary Viscometer also displayed, and it has different in sizes as the large instrument
are usually used to determine high viscosity solution such as oil. Important to measure the
viscosity for example a viscosity car paint cannot be too low as the paint did not attach to
the car and drip and if the viscosity is too high it can clog the opening of the paint can.
Recommendation
Interaction with Dr. Mohammad Fauzi Ahmad from Gas Group was beneficial for the
students of Chemistry. The practical approach is essential for our course since the student
have studied several instrument that used in the lab and observing its function in the
reality was effective to be more understandable.
For recommendation, this a great method of study since student get to interact with
the community and observing the reality of the outside world and it is an effective and
interesting way to gain the knowledge from the experts that has a lots of experiences.
