Chapter-1
1.1 IKRC Competition Objective
IKRC challenges teams of university undergraduate and graduate students to
conceive, design, fabricate, develop and compete with karts that are solely developed
by student teams.
To give teams the maximum design flexibility and the freedom to express their
creativity and imaginations. There are very few restrictions on the overall vehicle
design. The challenge to teams is to develop a vehicle that can successfully compete
in all the events described in the IKRC Rules. The competitions themselves give
teams the chance to demonstrate and prove both their creativity and their engineering
skills in comparison to teams from other universities in India.
Vehicle Design Objectives for the purpose of the IKRC competition, teams are to
assume that they work for a design firm that is designing, fabricating, testing and
demonstrating a prototype vehicle for the non-professional, weekend, competition
market.
The vehicle should have high performance in terms of acceleration, braking and
handling and be sufficiently durable to successfully complete in all the events
described in the IKRC Rules.
Each design will be judged and evaluated against other competing designs to
determine the best overall car.
1.3.3 Age:
Team members must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
Note: once the team registered in the event no changes will be allowed to make in
the team list including facility advisor.
1.5.6 Withdrawals:
Registered teams that find that they will not be able to attend the competition are
requested to officially withdraw by notifying the following no later than one Months
before the event.
CHAPTER-2
2.1 General Technical Requirement
General Technical requirements covers the basic design requirement of the Karts.
2.7 Firewall
Firewall must act as a shield which protects the driver from the heat produced by the
engine. It should be made in such a manner that driver’s body parts are not affected
by the engine heat at any time during all conditions. There should be no opening
from driver area to engine compartment via firewall. Only small openings can be
provided for the passage of wiring, accelerator cable, clutch cable, brake lining and
these openings must be properly covered using cromets. There should be minimum
2-inch clearance between the firewall and the engine. Only metallic firewalls are
permitted. Firewall should have minimum wall thickness of 0.7 mm in case of mild
steel and a wall thickness of 4 mm in case of aluminium.
2.9 Bumper
Bumpers must be installed in the front and rear of the vehicle such that it will cover
the tyres and protect the driver from any collision. Bumpers must be rigidly attached
to the chassis. Bumpers must be made of steel tubes of minimum dia of 25.4 mm
and wall thickness 1.5 mm. Front and rear bumpers should be provided with tow
hooks.
2.10.1 Starter
Vehicles must be equipped with onboard starters so that the driver can start the
vehicle in seated position without any external assistance. Cranking the engine using
external assistance is not allowed.
2.15 Suspension
No suspension
Repeated actuation of the switch must not restore power to these components, and it
must be designed so that the driver cannot reset it.
Note: If equipped, the engine drive sprocket cover may be used as part of the scatter
shield system.
2.21 Tyres:
Go-karting tyres must be used by team. Any other tyres other than the go-karting
tyres are prohibited. Acceptable tire size for front is 10x4.5-5(all dimensions in
inches) and for rear is 11x7.1-5.
2.24.2 Balaclava
A balaclava which covers the driver's head, hair and neck, made from acceptable
fire-resistant material or a full helmet skirt of acceptable fire-resistant material. The
balaclava requirement applies to drivers of either gender, with any hair length.
2.24.4 Suit
A fire-resistant suit, made from a minimum of one layer that covers the body from
the neck down to the ankles and wrists. The suit must be certified to one of the
following standards and be labeled as such:
SFI 3-2A/5 or FIA Standard 1986 or FIA Standard 8856-2000 .
2.24.5 Underclothing:
It is strongly recommended that all competitors wear fire resistant underwear (long
pants and long sleeve t-shirt) under their approved driving suit. This fire-resistant
underwear should be made from acceptable fire-resistant material and should cover
the driver's body completely from the neck down to ankles and wrists.
Note: If you do not wear fire resistant underwear it is strongly recommended that
you wear cotton underwear (t-shirts and long underpants) under your approved
driving suit.
2.24.6 Socks
Fire resistant socks made from acceptable fire-resistant material, that cover the bare
skin between the driver's suit and boots or shoes.
2.24.7 Shoes
Fire resistant shoes made from acceptable fire-resistant material. The shoes must be
certified to the standard and labeled as such:
- SFI
- FIA 8856-2000
2.24.8 Gloves
SFI 3.3 rated gloves must be used. Gloves of all leather construction or fire-resistant
gloves constructed using leather palms with no insulating fire resisting material
underneath are not acceptable.
2.25 Fasteners:
The bolts and nuts used in the kart must have the metric grade 8.8. The bolts and
Lock nuts grade less than 8.8 should not be used in any part of the kart. Only locknuts
must be used. Only metal locknuts must be used near heat radiating parts.
There must be a minimum of two (2) full threads projecting from any lock nut.
The bolt grade used minimum of 8.8.
CHAPTER -3
Static event regulation
3.1 Design presentation:
The design report must consist of all the design of the vehicle. The design of the
vehicle should satisfy the rules and regulations given in the rule book. The vehicle
must be manufactured based on the design. Considering manufacturing difficulties,
the vehicle can 15% deviation from the design. The design report will be verified
with the vehicle. For deviation will be penalized respectively. Further deviation can
be justified with proper documentation. The team must bring the design report
during the design presentation.
NOTE: All the team must submit this report before the event which will be generally
2 -1 month before the event. The submission date will be announced in the official
website.
3.2 Innovation:
The team must develop their own innovation related to the vehicle. The innovation
developed must be in working condition during the event. The technical inspectors
will come to the respective pit to examine the innovation. The team must bring the
innovation report during the innovation round.
Ensure teams develop the concept of their entry with all of these aspects correctly
considered, from the outset.
Ensure that all three static events are approached with a single common concept and
presented to each set of static judges in the same manner.
Ensure that participants gain experience in producing a business case and balancing
potentially conflicting attributes.
NOTE: All the team must submit this report before the event which will be generally
2 -1 month before the event. The submission date will be announced in the official
website. The team must bring the final report during the final event.
Chapter-4
4. Dynamic Events Regulation:
4.1BrakeTest:
All teams must clear brake test in order to participate in other dynamic events. When
brake is applied the kart must stop within the stopping zone in a straight line. The
wheels which is equipped with brake mechanism must lock. Teams will be given 3
attempts to clear brake test.
4.2 Acceleration
The acceleration test is to test the maximum speed of the vehicle and to determine
the time taken by the vehicle to cross 100 m stretch. May differ on day of dynamics.
4.3.1 Penalties
When a kart hits a cone, the team will be charged with a penalty of 2 seconds. When
a kart fails to complete the skid pad event, points will not be awarded and will be
marked as DNF.
4.4 Autocross
Autocross event is to evaluate the vehicle's maneuverability and handling qualities
