The benedictine values/virtues are anchored in the holy rule of St. Benedict.

With that comes

the benedictine core values of silence, prayer, obedience, stewardship, listening, humility, peace, work,
community, and hospitality. In silence, we tend to contemplate as we let God enter our lives. With
prayer we are able to communicate with God, benedictines also have their individual prayer reading
known as lectio divina. Obedience, listening, stewardship, and peace, go together as all of these are
essential in being hospitable, as we work, in order for us to have a peaceful community.

In terms of benedictine education, they came up with ten benedictine hallmarks, which is also
based on the holy rule of St. Benedict, these are: love of Christ and neighbor, prayer, stability,
conversatio, obedience, discipline, humility, stewardship, hospitality, and community.

As stated—the ten Benedictine hallmarks for education and Benedictine core values have
similarities, which are: prayer, obedience, stewardship, humility, community, and hospitality. However
the remaining hallmarks are also essential in having a Benedictine life, these are: love of Christ and
neighbor, wherein it is essential to build a better community life. Having stability and discipline is also
needed as it is a commitment in seeking God. As well as conversation which means the way of formation
and transformation. To sum it up, all of these benedictine values/virtues revolves around ora et labora
which means prayer and work, as these are the most Important component in order for us to have a
better spiritual life, as well as life in general.

INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION

My chosen value is ora et labora (prayer and work) as it encompasses all of the other
benedictine values/virtues.

Importance of the chosen benedictine value/virtue in the context of:

1) Family
Ora et labora is needed in the family as there is a saying “a family that prays together, stays
together” and we ought to believe that, that is true. However praying together needs to be
supported by working together as well, by having a quality time with each members of the
household.

2) School
As we encounter trials and hardships in academics, we should not only lead on to our loved
ones, but to God, as well. Although we have a bad habit that we only let God do the rest, we
should also take part/act in order for us to achieve our goals in life.

3) Church
It is obvious that we should pray as we attend in our church, as well as we need to put our
prayers, our formation and transformation into action, as having those said only in prayer is
quite meaningless.
4) Society
It is good to think if we have a prayerful community, as what others say “prayer is a strong
weapon”, imagine having a community that prays, then the society will became a better place to
live with. A prayer accompanied by an action is more powerful, than having prayer alone.

5) Government
Imagine having leaders that are prayerful, religious, and spiritual. Then they will be always
guided in their actions, as well as they will act in accordance with the will of God.

6) Environment
We should always pray for our environment, especially for our mother nature. However, this
will be held meaningless if we don’t act in aiding the environment, ourselves.

I am always moved by “bahala na ang Diyos”, “nagdasal naman na ‘ko”, and “pag pray mo na
lang ako”. Yes, all of these helped spiritually as I know that there is always a God by my side, and
psychologically as I believe that there is a superior being watching us—always ready to help us, which
gives me courage, whenever I face any problems in life. However, I also found out that having those are
not that enough, in order for me to pull-off my plans, as well as in solving my problems—I also need to
act on it, if I truly wanted that thing. Like in achieving my goals on becoming a successful lawyer, first on
a minor scale, wherein I must not only let God move me in changing for the better, but I must also help,
myself, by means of striving hard—by studying.
