 RAMEER TAWASIL

PERSONAL INFO AND EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT

Tausug-Zamboangeño painter Rameer Amilasan Tawasil was born in Karungdung, Kalinggalan Caluang,
Sulu. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Architecture at the Western Mindanao State University.

The multi-awarded Rameer is best known for using bright, strong, and bold colors in his paintings. The
foundation of his art is "okkil” (in Tausug; “okir” in Maranao), a design form indigenous to the Muslim
groups in Mindanao as seen in their woodcarvings, brassware, and textiles, among others.

AWARDS

A recipient of Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs Award, Rameer also received the Zamboanga Hermosa
Recognition Award, Culture and the Arts Category, awarded by then Zamboanga City Mayor Maria Clara
L. Lobregat in 2003. In 2006 he was given the Peace Citation Award by the Peace Advocates Zamboanga
for his rendition of the "peace dove" logo which has become a peace campaign symbol locally and
globally and has been included in the international collection of peace doves.

ARTWORKS

ISLAM IS ONE OF THE MAJOR INFLUENCES IN HIS ART. His subjects are mostly joyous
occasions and traditional ceremonies of the Tausug and Maranaos. One such painting, entitled “Royal
Wedding,” was chosen to be featured in Singapore. He wanted to portray the Muslim tribes as happy
people, contrary to common perception that they are prone to violence. His artworks depicted
Filipino Muslims in their traditional attire and at work, at play, and in prayers. “By using
contemporary expressions and vibrant cultural traditions of the Filipino Muslim community, he
bridges the values of past to the present and rendered them relevant to the next generation,”

He was a Filipino painter and sculptor. Imao was named National Artist of the Philippines for
Sculpture in 2006. A Tausūg, Imao is the first Moro to receive the recognition.[1] Aside from
being a sculptor, Imao is also a painter, photographer, ceramist, cultural researcher,
documentary film maker, writer, and a patron of Philippine Muslim art and culture.

EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT
Imao graduated from the university OF THE PHILIPPINES with the degree Bachelor of Fine Arts
in Sculpture. In 1960, Abdulmari Imao entered the University of Kansas in the United States as a
Smith Mundt and Fulbright Scholar. From 1962–1963 at the Rhode Island School of Design, Imao
honed his craft as a scholar taking Creative Sculptor in Ceramic Technology. Imao also entered
the Columbia University in New York City.

In 1963, Imao received the New York Museum of Modern Art Grant to Europe and Scandinavia
becoming the first Asian recipient of the grant.[2]
Abdulmari Imao is known for using the okir, sarimanok and the naga as motifs in his artworks
and is credited for popularizing the motifs to the Filipino national consciousness.[3][8] Imao draws
inspiration from Tausūg and Maranao art. Imao's Islamic faith is also a source of inspiration in
his art as evidenced in his sculptures composed of elements of Allah's name through Arabic
calligraphy.

 ALMA QUINTO

Born in Urdaneta, Pangasinan province, the Philippines, Quinto is a visual artist, educator, and cultural
worker, whose works aim to empower downtrodden lives and heal broken dreams. A native of
Pangasinan province in Central Luzon, Philippines, Alma takes inspiration from feminine heroes of her
culture such as Prinsesa Urduja and the ancient babaylan (priestess) whose images we can see in most
of her works.

EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT

Alma graduated with a bachelor's degree in Philippine Studies at the University of the Philippines where
she later took courses in art history and studio arts.

AWARDS AND ARTWORKS

Her works have been exhibited in international institutions, and she has been invited to various
biennales and triennales, including the Kuala Lumpur Biennale 2018, the Yokohama Triennale 2005 and
the Havana Biennale 2004. In 2003, Quinto embarked on a project in collaboration with young girls who
had suffered sexual abuse, titled “Soft Dreams and Bed Stories” (Havana Biennale, Cuba) featuring toy-
like soft sculptures and mattresses.

Born in 1983 in Capiz, Peter James Fantinalgo is a visual artist, who was admitted to the La
Consolacion College-Bacolod’s Fine Arts program in 2001.

ARTWORKS
Peter James Fantinalgo use “multiple layers of mixed organic powder and polymer-based
binder” to make human figures. It is his way of symbolizing “social and cultural effects as
metaphoric representations of a variety of laborious practices and their effects on the human
psyche”. Few of his artworks are Illusion Allusion, "The Realistic Idea of the Real", and Bequest.

 NUNELUCIO ALVARADO

Born in 1950 in the Philippines, Nunelucio Alvarado is active on the South-East Asian art scene
since the beginning of the 1970’s. He presently lives and works in Bacolod, province of Negros
Occidental, Philippines. He is one of the 4 founding members of the “Black Artists in Asia” a very
important politicised art group of the 1980s’.

EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT
He studied Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman in Manila. He studied
Advertising at School of Architecture and Fine Arts in La Consolacion College in Bacolod.

AWARDS AND ARTWORKS


He received numerous prestigious awards such as the Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural
Centre of the Philippines (1992), Grand Prize in the Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards (1997 &
1999). He is well known for his progressive artworks that depict the faces, the plights and
struggles of the Negros-based “sakadas” (labourers hired from outside) and other marginalized
populations. He has developed a unique and unmistakable style that stands out with its strong
colours, emotions and strength.
