Introduction
You will hear it again and again: “The best way to get a good vocabulary is to read a lot.” It is true.
This book is designed to give you supplemental help in acquiring a good vocabulary. The format of
Key Words for High Achievers presents you with a diagnostic test and checks on your retention of the
words in both the diagnostic and the models. All of the words have been taken from vocabulary
expectation lists for honors students and from books on the reading lists for Advanced Placement test in
English Language and Composition and English Literature and Composition. Command of the words
in this book will provide you with the sophisticated vocabulary that advanced readers, writers, and
speakers possess and employ.

Each of the 36 units is whole and independent. Each contains a pre-test, word modeling, a quick
match, and pre-test and quick-match answer keys.

How To Use This Book


1. Pre-test yourself on the 32 words in the unit.
2. Check your answers in the pre-test answer key located at the back of each unit.
3. Study the word modeling, which provides the following:
• correct spelling of the word
Example: anecdote
• pronunciation for the word (broken down phonetically by syllables, with the stressed syllable
capitalized)
Example: AN ek dote
• part of speech identification
Example: noun
• definition of the word
Example: short story; brief narrative
• context for the word (a sentence demonstrating the proper usage of the word)
Example: Public speakers often use an anecdote to illustrate a point.
• other forms of the word (if applicable)
Example: anecdotal (adjective)
4. Re-test yourself with the quick-match review located at the back of each unit.
5. Check your answers in the quick-match answer key.
