The Level of Each Day’s Need

By: Gilda Cordero Fernando

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways…….

I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light…….

Flora our cental character, looks on herself as a mediocre housewife, bumbling her way through
her daily chores, unable to please Manding the love of her life
One night she wanders out into the garden and encounters a nuno sa punso, the legendary dwarf
who lives in a termite hill under a tree. With a broomstick she traps him against the tree and blames him
for making her household a wreck. She demands that he transform her into a beautiful and intellectual
housewife. He agrees to meet the challenge if she will release him. However, the gift he promises her
will be for her husband, for it is he who needs it.
The next morning – the couple’s wedding anniversary – Flora’s children say they heard her walking
and talking in her sleep the night before.
Manding wakes up and sees in the mirror an image of a middle-aged man. As he watches his wife
puttering around in the kitchen, he realizes that she hasn’t changed after fourteen years. From the
window he watches the suburban community going about their Sunday morning activities. He observes
the sameness ordinariness of his neighbours’ lives. None of their marriages are any more exciting than
his. With all her faults, Flora is still his beloved wife.
