The tank is filled with SF6 gas at 1.5 bar.
3.2 Reception
Unloading & unpacking the circuit breakers requires a lot of care.
Immediately after receipt the breaker must be unpacked & inspected for any damages, which might have
occurred during transit. If required the insurance company must be informed without delay.
The breaker must also be checked for completeness in accordance with the packing list!
The manufacturer must be informed in case of deviations.
Note: The equipment should be carefully examined immediately when received to ensure that no
damage has occurred in transit. If the equipment has been damaged, both the transport contractor
and the local Schneider Electric representative should be advised as soon as possible.
It is mandatory to protect the VOX against grinding works or any cleaning with chloride product.
The circuit breaker VOX must be lifted as shown in section 0. This work requires a rope or a sling. No steel ropes
are to be used for lifting purposes as it might lead to damage of the equipment.
That circuit breaker VOX must be lifted with flexible straps but never with chains, in order to keep the tank free
from corrosion.
The circuit breaker VOX might be damaged if another lifting process is applied. In such case, the conditions of
guarantee do not apply.

3.4 Unpacking
When the equipment is unpacked, do not forget to
■ Remove plastic protection of aluminium surfaces of the LV cabinet.
■ Remove metal straps holding the bushings together.
■ Remove any remaining packing material.
WARNING: The VOX tank is a sealed for life unit containing a small volume of Sulphur Hexafluoride
(SF6) at low pressure. In normal circumstances, operators will never come into contact with the SF6
however the following information should be noted:
SF6 is a dense (about five times denser than air) colourless and odourless gas. It is inert under normal
atmospheric conditions. Exercise caution when using, especially where the gas can remain in trenches and the
possibility of asphyxiation exists. It is, therefore, IMPORTANT to ensure that adequate ventilation is provided
and also to check with any Statutory Regulations of the appropriate authority before use.
Under normal switching conditions no 'arc product gases' will be emitted from the unit, but in the unlikely event of
a fault causing rupture of the pressure relief device and subsequent escape of 'arc product gases' then as a
precautionary measure, all personnel must be evacuated from the immediate area. Sufficient time should be
given to allow the gases to disperse, particularly in enclosed areas, which should be thoroughly ventilated before
the return of personnel.
If it is impracticable to allow such time to elapse, then the correct breathing apparatus and protective clothing
must be worn. Unlike pure SF6 gas, 'arc product gases' may be harmful and do have a pungent odour and if this
is detected, then unprotected personnel should not return to the working area until it is safe to do so.
It would be preferable for a similar notice to be posted in an appropriate position on the substation premises.
5.1 Description
The VOX breakers are designed for outdoor application for a system voltage not exceeding 40.5 kV. They are
equipped with a spiral spring operated mechanism capable of a three-pole O-CO operation. The circuit breakers
are supplied fully assembled and equipped with their mechanism. All the adjustments are made during final
inspection.
All tests as defined in IEC 62271-100 (2001), IEC 60694 (2001), IEEE Std C37.04 (1999), IEEE C37.06 (1997),
IEEE C37.09 (1999) have been carried out.
Operation of the circuit breaker satisfies the requirements of the IEC standards as described in the IEC 62271-
100 and IEC 60694 standards. The normal service conditions for operation of the breakers are described in
Section 8.

5.2 Construction
The Main tank, houses the vacuum interrupters in the sealed SF6 environment. The pressure and the pressure to
volume ratio are low; consequently the container is not regarded as a pressure vessel. As the SF6 is used for
dielectric insulation only, it will not in normal service become contaminated due to arcing. Consequently special
gas handling precautions are not required.
The main tank construction is fully welded: Material is stainless steel. There is in option on the front side a gas
density monitoring signalisation with one level of alarm at 1,3 bars and one level of fault at 1,1 bars.
Avoid any metallic contact with the stainless steel tank to avoid contamination by ferric metals causing
an anaesthetic superficial « red » corrosion
The HV bushings (refer Figure 1) are welded onto the tank. Accommodation for ring type current transformers is
provided on each of the terminal bushings. The secondaries of these current transformers are marshalled in the
LV cabinet. Four legs are attached to the tank, which support the whole assembly when it is not mounted on to
the base frame.

bottles
The low voltage cabinet (refer figure 3 and figure 4) houses the mechanism, the three-phase drive shaft for the
Vacuum Interrupter drive, fuses, control switches, auxiliary switches, the arrangement for the secondary cables
and ancillary equipment.
The sealing arrangement for the transmission of the drive into the tank is through metallic bellows.
This chamber also houses the chimney that deflects the hot gases from the cabinet, which may be produced in
the unlikely event of internal arc fault, to the atmosphere. The release of hot gases is guided such that even if the
operator is working on any of the parts inside at the time of internal arc fault, he remains completely unaffected
by the hot gases.
This cabinet is secured to the tank by six screws. A double gasket is used to ensure weather proofing of all the
equipment while securing the cabinet with the tank. This provides an IP-55 degree of protection.
An inspection window is provided on the door of this cabinet for viewing the status of the breaker and closing
springs. The door is lifted with the help of gas filled struts. These struts also ensure that the door cannot be
lowered accidentally e.g. in high winds etc.
necessary energy to perform a fast O-CO reclosing cycle. It accelerates the main shaft (1) and the cam (3) which
pushes the moving contact of the vacuum interrupter to closing position. This transmission takes place through
bellows which are again welded on to the tank. In rest position, the drive shaft roller levers (6) bear on either the
closing latch (4) or tripping latch (5). The circuit breaker is closed and opened by applying a pulse to the
corresponding coil, or by operating the closing button (7) or tripping button (8). At the end of each closing
operation, the spiral spring may be rewound so that the necessary energy to perform a complete reclosing cycle
is always available. The standard operating mechanism is equipped with a closing coil, trip coil and an auxiliary
contact block for remote indication of circuit breaker operations. The operating mechanism and the drive shaft are
protected with a metal enclosure.

The base frame (refer Figure 6) supports the complete breaker. This is a galvanised structure, which has
predrilled pads for mounting on simple foundation fixings. The structure also provides points for connecting the
earthing of the equipment to substation earthing. Height adjustment is possible with 2.95 in / 75 mm steps. Base
frame is supplied with stainless steel nuts and bolts.

6.1 General
The VOX breaker and the support structure are packed together.
■ The complete breaker with LV cabinet (assembled).
■ The base frame (not assembled).
■ The voltage transformer (optional, not assembled)
The weight of these units depends on the rating of the breaker however generally it is in the range of 1322.7 to
2865.9 lbs. / 600 to 1300 kg for the breaker and 330 to 220.46 lbs. / 150 to 200 kg for the base frame.
Note: Do not tighten the bolts to the full torque. This has to be done once the breaker has been
mounted onto the base frame.
The four fixing bolts M20 (0.7874 in / 20 mm) must be sealed into the concrete pad as per Figure 10. The
levelling of all four legs can be performed either by adjusting the four jacking screws, or by adding spares or
wedges under the feet.

CAUTION: Special care should be taken so that the breaker is not subject to damage. The tank is
filled with SF6 gas at 1.5 bars.
CAUTION: Do not use steel ropes to lift the unit. These may cause damage to the unit. Use slings.
Sling the circuit breaker and LV cabinet assembly into position (refer Figure 11 and Figure 12).
Fit the support legs and bracing angles then place the completed assembly onto the foundations and fit the
foundation fixings. The foundation fixing is variable: respect distance minimum of 136.66 in / 2887 mm and
maximum of 140.24 in / 3562 mm in height between ground and external bushings.
Shims can be placed under the support legs to ensure the breaker is reasonably level in all directions.
Torque mounting bolts (between frame and circuit breaker) to 442.5 pound-force Inch (Ibf.ln) / 50 Newton.Metre
(N.m).
Remove the multicore gland plate situated on the base of the low voltage cabinet. This needs to be drilled
according to the number and the size of the cables. Fix the cable glands onto this plate and pass the cables
through them. Now refit the gland plate and tighten the glands. Connect the multicore cables in accordance with
the diagram of connections. Ensure all the electrical connections are tight.
Note: The tests outlined in this section are those to be made after the equipment has been erected,
but before energization.
7.1 Precautions
The policy to be followed in making the equipment available for commissioning or maintenance shall be that it is
isolated, proved dead and earthed.
Local electricity authority / utility procedures shall also be complied with.
Precautions should be taken to ensure that the isolated equipment cannot be re- energized from any high voltage
or low voltage source of supply.
The circuit breaker closing mechanism is of the motor wound spring type capable of retaining a stored closing
spring charge. Before attempting any work the stored charge must be released, by operating the circuit breaker
manually from 'OFF' to 'ON' to 'OFF' with the motor supply disconnected.
7.2 LV wiring
Connect all the control circuits in accordance with the diagram of connections provided. So to avoid the formation
of condensation, immediately engage the heating in LV cabinet.
Caution: In case of external temperature under -10°C, the heating resistor must be put in service
during 2 hours before any mechanical test on the circuit-breaker.
The secondary connections of the possible current transformers (CT) must be connected in accordance with the
diagram of connections
Warning: before putting VOX circuit breaker under tension, the secondaries of the CTs must all be
connected, or otherwise these must be short-circuited.
Charge the spring either by the spring-charge motor or with the crank (refer Figure 13).
Operate the circuit breaker by means of the manual electric drive (refer section Error! Reference source not
found. Error! Reference source not found.)
Check the operation by carrying out five operating cycles by sending electrical closing / opening instruction (I/O).
Check the status (green/red) of the display of the position indicator during each operation (check the
correspondence).
If necessary, repeat the previous operation by sending instructions from the sub-station
DANGER: Before commencing tests 7.4.1 and 7.4.2 on the secondary insulation carry out the
following:
Disconnect the circuit breaker mechanism spring charging motor and rectifier and any relaying
devices. Short circuit current transformer secondary windings.
DANGER: Before commencing tests 7.4.3 and 7.4.4 on the primary insulation, short-circuit and earth
the current transformer secondary windings. Under no circumstances shall current transformer
secondaries be open circuited with the primary circuit on load.
After testing, all conductors shall be discharged to earth and components re-connected.
Rated power frequency withstand voltage High voltage test on site (80 %)
70 kVrms 56 kVrms
80 kVrms 64 kVrms
95 kVrms 76 kVrms
After high voltage tests have been completed a further megger test should be made to ensure that the initial
resistance has not been altered significantly.
Connect the incoming and outgoing connections to the factory fitted terminals on the VOX HV bushings.
Two types of connection pads can be mounted on VOX. NEMA 4 or EATS 41-16.

8.3 Padlocking
The padlocking arrangements are provided for ensuring additional safety for the operation of the breaker. These
arrangements are:
■ For locking the LV cabinet door
■ The door may be padlocked using 1 to 3 padlocks with shank from 0.1575 to 0.315 in / 4 to 8 mm.
■ For locking the mechanism manual spring release button (and refer to panic trip). (refer Figure 13)
9.1 General
The inspection policy for VOX switchgear is based on IEC 62271-100 and IEC 60694 to which reference should
be made for a general background to this subject. In particular the inspection policy is based on the concept of:
Inspection, Examination and Overhaul as defined in that standard.
Vacuum switchgear is low inspection equipment, the vacuum interrupter being sealed units, which do not require
maintenance during their life. They are capable of many operations before requiring replacement.
The circuit breaker operating mechanism and ancillary components are designed to have a performance similar
to that of the interrupter and will not normally require any adjustments during the design life. The only
readjustments, which may be required, are associated with replacing of trip and release coils.
A slight discoloration of the bushings may be noted after several years without impact on the guaranteed
performances. Use alcohol (isopropanol) and clean cloths to degrease the seal wires (only if necessary).
Contact wear is checked with the circuit breaker CLOSED. Wear is measured on the linkage system behind the
mechanism (refer Figure 14). The measurement does not need any special tools and can be made, for example,
using a set of feeler gauges.
The dimension E is measured between the lower surface of part A and the upper surface of part B.
No action is required when E is greater than 1 mm.
When E decreases to about 1 mm, schedule to change the interrupter and contact the manufacturer or his
representative. When E is approximately 0.5 mm, change the interrupter as soon as possible.
Important X - Radiation from Vacuum Interrupters: Any electrical gap in a hard vacuum when
stressed electrically may generate X- rays. In the case of VOX equipment tests have shown that
the X-ray emission at the test voltage stated is less than that permitted for unclassified workers
in the Ionising Radiation (Sealed Sources) Regulations 1985.
It is pointed out that the permitted level is for continuous exposure whereas the test voltage is
applied for a short time on each occasion. The vacuum circuit breaker does not emit X-radiation
at working voltage.
The quality of the vacuum interrupter can be checked on site by applying a test voltage of 56kV ac or 78kV dc for
two to three seconds across the open contacts of each phase in turn with the other side earthed. Vacuum
interrupters do not exhibit the phenomenon of leakage current at the test voltage. They will either conduct or not
conduct. Leakage current will normally be associated with either the test connections degraded external
insulation. Provided that there is no evidence of breakdown, the interrupter is in a satisfactory condition.
Should a breakdown occur, the circuit breaker should be kept out of service and the matter reported without
delay to Schneider Electric customer services, those details can be found on page 3.
