    TESDA has a new tech-voc curriculum for k-12


    The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) said it has completed the
    development of a new set of curricula for students under the K-12 system to teach technical
    vocational education and training (TVET) courses. Secretary Joel Villanueva, director general of
    TESDA, also announced that more than a hundred teachers and supervisors of Technology and
    Livelihood Education (TLE) have completed the compulsory training and are now ready to teach
    the new curriculum. "We want to make sure that things are in place for the successful
    implementation of the K to 12 education," Villanueva said at the signing of the K to 12 law in
    Malacanang on May 15. "TVET will play a central role in the new education model that prepares
    students for tertiary education, middle-skills development, employment and entrepreneurship,"
    He said. The K to12 law, which is the Aquino administration's signature education program, adds
    two years of high school to the current 10-year curriculum. For high school students, whether in
    vocational skills, music, arts or sports, the two additional years of senior high school are intended
    to serve as a specialization time. High school graduates have the option of seeking jobs with or
    going to college with a basic education diploma. “K to 12 will make our curriculum relevant to
    the learners. It will ensure an integrated and seamless learning for our students,” Villanueva
    added.

    Villanueva said that for incoming Grades 7 and 8, curriculum guides, learning modules and
    teachers' guides for 23 tech-voc courses were developed. Examination of these products is
    currently ongoing for Grades 9 to 10. These are on Automotive Servicing; Mechanical Drafting;
    Computer Hardware Servicing; Horticulture; Shielded Metal Arc Welding; Consumer
    Electronics Servicing; Aqua Culture; Dressmaking /Tailoring; Masonry; Care giving; Household
    Services; Plumbing; Agri Crop Production; Fish Capture; Handicraft; Carpentry; RAC Servicing
    (DomRac); Electrical Installation and Maintenance; Bread and Pastry Production; Tile Setting;
    Animal Production; Food (Fish) Processing; and Beauty Care (Nail Care Services). TESDA
    provided technical assistance for the review of the K to 12 Entrepreneurship module. This has
    also provided instruction in validating curriculum guides and learning modules for 17 TLE
    supervisors and 135 LTE teachers. TESDA, the Higher Education Commission and the
    Education Department have worked very closely to ensure the efficient introduction of the K –
    12 programme. The three organizations have joined forces to equip several schools as role
    models for K to 12 education. To date, the Senior High School Modeling Program has been
    adopted by 30 schools and a further 36 private schools have submitted proposals for their
    implementation plans. "The rise of good schools is no accident. It is a product of deliberate
    policies and long-term investments that acknowledge that quality education is central to a
    nation's economic growth," Villanueva said.
