CANINES

 Functions:
 Cut food morsels
 Protect posterior teeth against the damaging horizontal forces-> canine
protected occlusion
 Large roots-> support as abutments for fixed bridges prostheses or removable
partial dentures
 Long thick roots help anchor them in the alveolar process of the jaw bone
 Incisal ridge is divided into 2 slopes by a cusp resembling a pentagon shape
 Mesial slope is shorter than distal slope
 Mesial segment of incisal edge is shorter and less inclined compared to distal
segment
 Don’t have mamelons but may have a notch on either cusp slope
 Labial surface-> prominently convex with a vertical labial ridge
 The measurement of the crown and root is greater labiolingually (longer) than
mesiodistally (wider)
MAXILLARY CANINE

 The facial side of the crown is made up of three labial lobes

 Cingulum on lingual surface is the fourth lobe
 Middle lobe forms the prominent labial ridge
 Shallow depressions lie mesial and distal to labial ridge
 Mesial and distal cusp ridges form an angle that approaches the right angle- 105
degrees
 There is a lingual ridge running cervicoincisally from the cusp to cingulum, and a
mesial and a distal shallow lingual fossa, lying on either side of the lingual ridge
 Proximal aspect-> crown is wedge shaped and bulky due to prominent labial and
lingual ridges
 The apical third of the root is narrow mesiodistally and apex is sharp
 Bends distally
 Root is noticeably broad faciolingually in its cervical and middle thirds
 Incisal aspect-> mesial half of labial outline is quite convex, whereas the distal half of
labial outline is somewhat concave

MANDIBULAR CANINE

 Labial surface:
 Smooth and convex
 Labial ridge not as pronounced as on maxillary canines
 Crown is long and narrow compared to maxillary C
 Mesial and distal cusp ridges form more obtuse angle than maxillary C
 Apical end of root:
 Straighter than curving towards mesial or distal sides
 Root curvature can’t be used to distinguish L and R unlike MaxCI
 Roots are shorter than the roots of upper canines
 Labiolingual dimension of crown:
 Noticeable larger than mesiodistally
 Oblong faciolingual outline is characteristic for mandibular canines
 Incisal part of crown has a slight distolingual twist
 Maxillary canines demonstrate wear on lingual side and mandibular canines on
facial side of incisal edge
