DATA ANALYSIS

PLAN

A guide by Young Pharmacists Scholars -2020

Learning objectives
At the end of the presentation, you should be able to know
the following:

1. Meaning of data analysis plan

2. Benefits of data analysis plan

3. How to create a data analysis plan

4. How to use a data analysis plan

1. Definition
● DAP is a document developed by a
researcher in advance to provide
a step-by-step or a guide to a data
analysis.
● It is prepared prior to statistical
analysis.
● It should be agreed by supervisory
team/authors before starting data
analysis
Benefits of DAP

1-It serve as a guide for the selection of statistical

methods

2- Assist you to understand your data

Tip

3- Help you think through the data DAP prevents wrong

application of statistical
analysis that can lead
to wrong interpretation
4- It ensure optimum use of data and of study finding. It
saves you time, energy
and resources

5- To identify an error within the data

How to develop DAP

A DAP should contain the following items:

1- The title of the research
Tip
2- The research question DAP is developed when
the data is ready before
3- The research hypothesis an analysis
However, some

4- Study objectives researchers develop

DAP b4 data collection
How to develop DAP

A DAP should contain the following items:

5- Identification of variables
-dependent variable Tip
Use your questionnaire
-independent variables to identify variables
(dependent and
independent variables)
For example if you are measuring prevalence of
hypertension, the question that asked presence or

absence of hypertension (yes/no) is the dependent

variable
While, other questions eg, gender, age.....are
independent variables
Tip
Please visit the below

How to develop DAP link for detail

information about types
of variables
A DAP should contain the following items: https://www.statisticshowto.

bability-and-statistics/types-
of-variables/

6- Identify the type of your variables

(i.e. numerical, ordinal, nominal) as this will determine the test
to apply.
7- Check the normality distribution of the dependent variable
(if it is a numerical variable).
How to develop DAP

A DAP should contain the following items:

8- Select appropriate statistical methods (eg. ANOVA etc)
based on each study objective Tip
When you finished the
steps above, you can
then go back to your
9- Proofread objectives and select
an appropriate
statistical methods to
answer each objective
based on the type of
the dependent variable
Some researchers also
add reason for choosing a
particular statistical test

Tip
It will demonstrate how
well. you know what
you are doing
Examples

Binary logistic regression

will be applied because
of its suitability in
determining
independent risk factors
of a binary categorical
variable
How to use a DAP
Tip
What do to after developing a DAP?
At this stage, your DAP
is now a document,
before applying it, you
need to do the
following:.
1. Get a feedback from an
expert

First, you can ask a friend

who is good in biostat to take
Tip
a look at it and give you a It is very important for
someone who is an
feedback expert in biostatistics to
review your DAP and
give you feedback
2. Share the draft with your
supervisors/co-authors

Share with your supervisors

and asked for their feedback Tip
and approval It is very important for
your supervisors to
agree before
proceeding to
statistical analysis
3. Proceed with the analysis
Tip
You can always come
back to it if you
encountered any issues
or challenges with the
analysis
Good luck!
We hope you’ll use these tips and apply it in
your research.!

We are always happy to assist and get a

feedback from you on this presentation and
other activities
