Floating and Sinking Property of Materials

This document discusses the properties of sinking and floating for different materials. It explains that objects sink if they are heavy for their size, as the water does not push up on them enough to float. Objects float if they are light for their size, as the water is able to push up on the object enough for it to stay at the surface. Examples are given of objects that typically sink like rocks and metal, and objects that typically float like cork, wood, and balloons. The document concludes that buoyancy is the tendency for an object to float in liquid.

Floating and Sinking Property of Materials

Sink – means to go below the surface of the water.
Sinking happens when the whole object is below the
surface of water.
Example: rocks, steel or metal, coins, wrench, nail,
crayon, lock, scissors and glass.
Float – means to stay above the surface of the water.
Floating happens when an object is on the water.
Examples: cork, leaf, feather, ice cube, rubber ducky,
beach ball, life buoy, empty bottle, inflated balloon and
most wooden objects like stick, logs and pencil.
* Objects float if they are light for size. The water pushes
up the objects. Things that float are buoyant.
* Objects sink if they are heavy for their size.
Buoyancy – is the tendency of an object to float in liquid.
