Plastic & concrete do not bond properly. Hence the very purpose of providing
spacer is hampered.
Studies have shown corroded bar at the plastic spacer inter-junctions.
To unquote Indian Cement Review (ICR) Concrete/ July 2016 “Polypropylene
and PVC cover blocks are also available but these are foreign body materials to
concrete, fails to essentially form a permanent bond with concrete. Thermal
coefficient of expansion is different with concrete. Concrete cover blocks have
better bonding with surrounding concrete as it is made from the same material”.
PVC spacers must not be used as they cannot form a bond with the hardened
concrete and provoke a water infiltration along the contact surface of spacer and
concrete. (Extract from German Association of Gas and Hydraulic Engineers
regulations).
PVC Concrete spacers cannot sustain accidents such as fire & eventually will lead
to failure of structure.
Concrete cover blocks prevent rebars from corrosion, protect them from fire to
certain length of time and help to provide proper transfer of stresses from concrete
to steel rebars, by helping provide proper cover to rebars. Concrete cover blocks
are made from high strength, Fibre Reinforced Concrete in a factory with strict
quality control.
The problem with PVC cover blocks is that they get deformed in shape and may
not give clear cover as desired. To prevent such issue concrete covers must be
used, provided the strength of concrete used to make cover block should be higher
than the structural member.
