The Seven Sacraments

What are the Sacraments?
The sacraments are efficient signs of the sanctifying grace.
SIGNS - a sacrament is a "visible sign of an invisible reality"

- "Sacrament" is the Latin translation of the Greek word "mystery"
EFFICIENT - the seven sacraments are efficient signs, because they make effective
the invisible reality they represent.
SANCTIFYING GRACE - the sacraments are efficient signs of the sanctifying grace,
because they transmit the grace of God.
- it is the friendship and communion with God.
First Sunday of Advent - the beginning of the Liturgical Year

- begins one the Sunday after the Christ the King
**FOUR LITURGICAL COLORS OF THE CHURCH**

GREEN - Ordinary Times
WHITE - The feasts of Jesus Christ and of the Virgin Mary
RED - The feasts of the apostles and of the martyrs
VIOLET - Advent, Lent, and Funeral masses
SACRAMENTALS - sacred signs which sanctify the different circumstances of life.
Examples:

+Religious Professions
POPULAR RELIGIOSITY - prayers which help to incarnate the Gospel in the ordinary
life of the people and in the different cultures.

Holy Rosary
Carrying of medals and scapulars
Way of the Cross

**BAPTISM**
MATTHEW 28:19 - Jesus institutes the sacrament of Baptism.
- "Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations: baptise them in
the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit"
**3 KINDS OF BAPTISM**

SACRAMENTAL BAPTISM - acquired by those who receive the sacrament of baptism.
BAPTISM OF BLOOD - received by the martyrs who died for Jesus Christ before being
baptized
BAPTISM OF DESIRE - received by those who followed the will of God, but did not
have the opportunity to know the Church and to be baptized.
**FRUITS OF BAPTISM**
+ The Original Sin is forgiven
+ We become Children of God
+ We become members of the Church
1 Corinthians 6:15 - "Your bodies are members making up the body of Christ"
+ We receive the Character
Character - a spiritual and indelible seal.
The Ordinary Ministers of Baptism

+ Bishop
+ Priest
+ Deacon
The extraordinary minister, in emergency cases, is any person who intends to

baptise according to the intention of the Church
**WHO CAN RECEIVE THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM?**

1. Any person who believes in Christ, knows the Apostolic Creed, the Ten
Commandments, and the Lord's Prayer.
The children, who cannot know all these things, are baptized in the faith of
the Church, and of their parents and Godparents.
2. Adult people, before receiving baptism must undertake the catechumenate.

Catechumenate - a period of preparation for the faith, the commandments, the
sacraments, the liturgy and the community life of the Church.
Note: We can only receive baptism once. (Italicize)

***CONFIRMATION***
JOHN 20:21-22 - "As the Father sent me, o I am sending you. Receive the Holy
Spirit"
PENTECOST - when the Confirmation in the spirit took place for the first time.
ACTS 2:1-4 - The descent of the holy spirit to the apostles and Mary
ACTS 19:6 - the confirmation took place at any time the apostles laid their hands
over the disciples.
Fruits of Confirmation
+ We receive the Holy Spirit
7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit:
+ Wisdom
+ Intellect
+ Counsel
+ Knowledge
+ Piety
+ Fortitude
+ Fear of the Lord
We become soldiers of Christ

We confirm our faith and become witnesses of Christ until death.
THE MINISTER OF CONFIRMATION
Bishop - the minister of confirmation
Priest - can only confirm in special cases delegated by the bishop
WHO CAN RECEIVE CONFIRMATION?

Christian Catholic - can receive the sacrament of Confirmation.
- before receiving confirmation, we must prove that we know the
Apostle's Creed, the Ten Commandments, the Seven Sacraments, and the Our father.
MATTER OF CONFIRMATION
Laying of Hands - it is the matter of the sacrament of confirmation
ACTS 8:15, 17 - Peter and John laid hands on them and they receive the Holy Spirit
SACRED CHRISM - makes us prophets, king, and priests like Jesus Christ.
CHRIST and CHRISTIANS - names that come from the word "Chrism" which means
"Anointed"
Olive Oil and Perfume - makes up the sacred Chrism
Holy Thursday - the bishop consecrates the Sacred Chrism
**HOLY EUCHARIST**
Last Supper - Jesus instituted the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist
MARK 14:22-24 - Take this, this is my body. Then he took a cup and give thanks, he
gave it to his disciples and all drank from it and he said to them: This is my body
and blood of the covenant, which is to be poured out for many.
IMPORTANCE OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST

1. As baptised Christians, we express our togetherness with the Mystical Body of
Jesus Christ which is the Church
2. We assemble on the day of our Lord's Resurrection just like our ancestors did to
their faith.
3. To remember and to renew just as Jesus told us to do.
4. To read our sacred books and learn from them
5. To encourage one another in the Christian Life
6. bTo celebrate His life, death, and resurrection
7. To sahre in the oneness of His body and blood
8. In the parish, we come together to honor God in this highest form of prayer. It
is the apex of Christian worship.
MEANING OF THE HOLY EUCHARIST

Holy Eucharist - also called the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
- also called the Lord's Supper
- also called the Memorial of Jesus' Resurrection
- is a celebration and occassions of joy and freedom from work

"Sanctus"
c. Epiclesis - the church calls on God's power and asks that the gits offered by
men may be consecrated

e. Anamnesis - keeps Chrisit's memorial by recalling his passion, resurrection ,and
ascension
f. Offering - the Church offers the victim to the fFAther in the holy spirit
g. Intercessions - makes clear that the Eucharist is celebrated in community

SACRAMENT OF PENANCE/RECONCILIATION
Jesus - instituted the Sacrament of Penance.
JOHN 20:22-23 - As the father sent me, so I am sending you. Receive the Holy
Spirit, For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins
you retain, they are retained.
1 JOHN 1:8-9 - If we say that we have no sin in us, we are deceiving ourselves and
refusing to admit the truth but if we acknowledge our sins, then God who is
faithful and just will forgive our sins and purify us from everything that is
wrong.
MATTHEW 16;19 - I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, whatever you
bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth
shall be considered loosed in heaven.
Bishop, Priest - the minister of penance.
FRUITS OF PENANCE
1. Penance remits all sins and gives us sanctifying grace.
2. We are reconciled with the Church
WHO CAN RECEIVE THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCE

+ Every Christian Catholic can receive the sacrament of Penance, provided he
regrets his sins and promises not to sin again.

HOLY ORDINATION
Jesus - instituted the sacrament of ORdination during the Last Supper.
Luke 22:1-20 - This is my body which will be given for you. This cup is the new
covenant in my blood. Do this as a memorial of me.
Mark 10:21 - Go and sell everything you own and give the money to the poor and you
wil have a trasure in heaven, then come, follow me.
