CFD

This document provides instructions for Assignment #5 on Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) that is due on March 18, 2020. Students are asked to: 1) Formulate nodal finite difference equations using the energy balance method for three cases of steady state heat transfer: a node at a plane surface with convection, a node at an external corner with convection, and a node at a plane surface with uniform heat flux. 2) Use the energy balance method to obtain equations to solve for the temperature at 6 nodes in a geometry considering boundary conditions. The students are given the boundary temperature values and heat flux values and told to assume uniform grid spacing and a conductivity

Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) – Jan 2020 Semester

Assignment #5 (CFD)

Due date: March 18, 2020 by 5 pm

1. We have derived the nodal finite difference equations for the steady state heat transfer in
the class. Using the same approach (Energy Balance Method) formulate the nodal finite
difference for each case below:

a. Case 1: Node at a plane surface with convection

b. Case 2: Node at an external corner with convection

c. Case 3: Node at a plane surface with uniform heat flux

2. Use Energy Balance Method and consider steady state heat transfer to obtain
the equations to solve the temperature at nodes 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, and 11 and
assume the following boundary conditions also shown in below figure. Node 1-4
surface temperature T= 100⁰C, Node 8, 12, 16 surface temperature, T = 20⁰C,
Node 13-16 surface temperature T= 50⁰C, Node 5 and 9 Q= 5kW/m2 directly
heating the nodes. Assume Δx is 0.25m and Δx and Δy are equal. Conductivity,
k=20 W/m⁰C.

Note: You may solve the 6 unknowns using any computational tools, i.e Excel,
MATLAB, apps, etc.
