A Quiet Place: A Short Analysis of The Hero's Journey
Watch the movie, 'A Quiet Place,' (2018) and break the movie down according to the
Hero's journey template. Don't just write bullet point. Explain who the protagonist(s) is
and what is the significance of every moment in the hero's journey in the larger narrative
for them.
A Quiet Place features a family of four, who serve as the protagonists, and the monsters who
serve as antagonists. Analysing the movie based on the hero's journey seems to highlight the
mother: Evelyn, and the daughter: Regan as the main characters whose separate journeys we
Regan can be considered the highlight as it is her who serves as the starting and ending of the
story. In her case, it can be said that she enters the strange land/ the ‘unknown’, before her call to
adventure. Or this can serve as both. This is referring to the fact that it is Regan’s actions which
ultimately causes the death of her younger brother to whom she unknowingly gave a toy that
For Regan, both her parents served as mentors as both of them equipped her for her journey.
However, it seemed like her dad kept rejecting her while she didn’t get along with her mom that
well. This served as one of the trials that she survived. This was also something that added to her
character development as the tables had turned by the time the movie ended. Evelyn and Lee
kept pushing Marcus to take the role of the protector thereby neglecting Regans training.
However, it is Lee’s creation that ultimately helps Regan thus he can be argued to serve as the
helper.
Regans trials included her disagreement with her father, after which she abandoned her mother
and appeared to run away. This was something that added more to her guilt as her absence put
her mother in danger. Her second trial also included her role when Marcus fell into the silo,
The death of her father can serve as the realisation and transformation part for her character. The
two children attract the monsters attention and in the effort to save them, Lee gives up his life.
However, before he dies he tells regan he loves her. As this is the last thing he says, it probably
removes the doubt Regan has about her dad's perception of her role in Beau’s death.
The realisation Regan has saves them all, as she understands that the broken cochlear implant her
dad designed for her can work against the monsters. This also serves as her atonement for her
role in her brothers and her father's death. She devises a way to fight the monsters and steps into
Regans screen time is more than the screen time given to any of the other individuals. She also
serves as the ultimate saviour. While she never leaves the special world, it can be said that to her
this world was all she knew. So she’s already in the known land. As the start of her journey was
considered to be the metaphorical from the time her brother died and she became riddled with
guilt, the end can be taken to be her relieving herself from the guilt. She also goes through the
most character developments: going from someone who resents her disability to someone who
uses it as a tool to save her family, going from helpless to the protector and stepping into the role
For Evelyn, it can be assumed that her hero’s journey started before the movie was set. Her
special world was the existing world in the movie, with Lee acting as her helper and her mentor.
While Evelyn does not go through as many transformations as Regan does, she is the person with
the second most screen time, and also the person who went through the most.
The two events that heightened the intensity of the movie regarding Evelyn was when she gave
birth, and later when she was discovered by the monsters in the basement. The labour scene was
set right in the middle of the movie was the defining part of the movie, as it completed the circle
of life context: a new life in exchange for the one lost, and also laid down the stakes for everyone
to see. This event followed the woods scene where the elderly man died, and right after that the
baby was born. The second trial the Evelyn faced was when she was cornered in the basement.
All of her scenes depicted her as her own saviour, if not the ultimate one.
Evelyn's realisation and atonement weren’t as significant as Regan’s. Perhaps it was Lee’s death
that forced her to accept that she had to get out of the ‘present world’. Her atonement can be
considered her stance as the monsters approach as she gets ready to fight and allows her daughter
