CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT TEST – I FEBRUARY 2020

Programme & Branch : B.Tech. / Mechanical

Semester : IV
Course Code & Name : MEC 2211 Kinematics of Machinery
Duration : 3 Hours Maximum Marks : 50
Assume any missing data suitably
Use of Drawing sheet is permitted

PART-A (5 X 2 = 10 MARKS)
1. Differentiate between structure and machine.
2. Define degrees of freedom. How it is determined?
3. Define the term relative velocity.
4. State Kennedy’s Theorem.
5. Acceleration of link which rotates at constant speed is _________.

PART-B (2 X 12 = 24 MARKS)
6. a. With the help of a neat sketch, describe any three inversions of single slider
crank mechanism. (12)
(OR)
b. Explain the following i) Crank and slotted lever quick return motion (16)
mechanism and ii) Elliptical Trammel.

7. a. In a four bar chain ABCD, AD is fixed and is 120 mm long. The crank AB is
30 mm long and rotates at 100 rpm clockwise, while the link CD = 60 mm
oscillates about D. BC and AD are of equal length. Find the angular velocity
and angular acceleration of link CD when angle BAD = 60o. (12)
( OR)
b. In a slider crank mechanism, the length of the cranks and the connecting rod
are 200 mm and 800 mm respectively. Find the velocity of the slider and the
angular velocity of the connecting rod if the crank rotates at 40 rad/s. Take
crank angle as 30O. (12 )

PART-C (1 X 16 = 16 MARKS)

8. a. The mechanism shown in the figure has the dimensions of various links as
follows: AB = DE = 150 mm; EF = 375 mm. The crank AB makes an angle of
45O with the horizontal and rotates about A in the clockwise direction at a
uniform speed of 120 mm. The lever DC oscillates about the fixed point D,
which is connected to AB by the coupler BC. The block F moves in the
horizontal guides, being driven by the link EF. Determine i) velocity of the
block F and ii) angular velocity of the link DC.

(16)
(OR)

b. PQRS is a four bar mechanism with link PS fixed. The lengths of the links
are PQ = 62.5 mm, QR = 175 mm, RS = 112.5 mm and PS = 200 mm.
The crank PQ rotates at 15 rad/sec clockwise. Draw the velocity and
acceleration diagram when angle QPS = 45o and Q and R lie on the same side
of PS. Find the angular velocity and angular acceleration of links QR and RS. (16)
