Excavators — Section Contents

Current Caterpillar 300 Series Buckets

(GP)

They are designed to optimize performance in moderate-

to-easy to penetrate soils that are not highly abrasive.
These buckets take advantage of the easier to load soil by
using a larger tip radius to get more capacity for each
bucket width.

Heavy Duty (HD)

These buckets are designed to work in all but the most

abrasive work conditions. They are much more durable
than the GP buckets. For a given width they have a smaller
tip radius. This insures excellent loadability in difficult to
penetrate soils. They have thicker base edges and larger
GET than the GP buckets.

Heavy Duty Rock (HDR)

Excavators — PSK/GET 7/16/18, 11(42 PM

These buckets are designed for the most severe rock

conditions. They offer the same capacity, tip radius, and
GET as the heavy duty buckets, but material thickness has
been increased and wear plates are larger than the heavy
duty buckets. These buckets use Modulok type sidebar
protectors rather than sidecutters.

Rock (R)

Balderson offers a line of rock buckets that are designed to

work in the same applications as the Cat heavy duty rock
buckets. These complimentary offerings will provide a
broad offering of rock buckets. They will accept sidebar
protectors or sidecutters.

Rock Ripping (RR)

Ruggedly constructed narrow bucket for ripping where

material penetration and the inability to blast is the primary
problem.

The aggressive lip-type ripping design uses five "sharp"

teeth. The teeth are staggered with the center tooth
designed to enter the ground first at a 45 degree angle. The
entire force of the machine is first applied to this one tooth.

The two teeth on each side of the center tooth enter the
ground next with the corner teeth (which project slightly

outward) entering last. These outward projecting teeth are

meant to "slice" the trench, leaving a very clean cut wall
and flat bottom trench.

The rock ripping bucket plate thicknesses are an average of

75% greater than standard bucket plate thicknesses. This
gives more wear material and rigidity.

Cat Ditch Cleaning (DC)

A wide, shallow bucket designed for cleaning ditches and

slope work. Also good for grading in light materials. They
will not accept teeth or sidecutters.

Noncurrent Caterpillar 300 Series Buckets

Trenching (T)

General purpose bucket for trenching. Bucket width, which

determines the bucket capacity, is dictated by pipe
diameter. Suitable for most soil conditions where moderate
impact and abrasion conditions are encountered.

Excavators — PSK/GET 7/16/18, 11(42 PM

Excavation (X)

General purpose wide bucket for excavation. The

excavation bucket has a shorter tip radius than a
comparable capacity trenching bucket providing increased
curl force. Suitable for the same types of material as the
trenching bucket.

Utility (UT)

Light duty excavation, finishing, or cleanup bucket for a

variety of utility applications. Larger capacity buckets for
lighter density materials. Bolt holes are provided for bolt-
on teeth or bolt-on cutting edge.

Excavators — PSK/GET 7/16/18, 11(42 PM

Extreme Service Trenching (ET)

For tough trenching of sandstone, most limestone, etc. with

decomposed or fragmented rock content. The shell, bottom
wear plates, and side plates are 15% to 25% thicker. Also,
most ET buckets have thicker base edges and use larger
GET than the standard trenching version. ET buckets will
accept an optional weld on ripper shank pod on the back.
Equipping the bucket with rippers can extend use of Cat
buckets into applications previously felt to be too tough
especially where penetration is the major obstacle.

Note: Rear rippers are not available on all ET model

buckets.

Extreme Service Excavation (EX)

Available for tough excavation of sandstone, most

limestone, caliche, etc. with decomposed or fragmented
rock content. The shell, bottom wear plates, and side plates
are 15% to 25% thicker. Also, the base edge is thicker and
uses larger GET than the standard excavation version.

Note: A ripper can be installed to extend the EX into

tougher applications.

Mass Excavation (MX)

General purpose bucket for volume loading of packed

ground, tough dry clay, etc. A mass excavation bucket is
similar structurally to an excavation bucket, except it is
wider and has more capacity to take advantage of the
capabilities of mass excavation arrangement.

Extreme Service Mass Excavation (EMX)

A heavy duty mass excavation bucket designed for tough

excavation of sandstone, most limestone, caliche, etc. with
decomposed or fragmented rock content. The shell, bottom
wear plates, side plates, and base edge are thicker and use
larger GET than the mass excavation bucket.

Mass Excavation Spade (MXS)

Heavy duty mass excavation bucket for loading shot rock,

etc. The bucket design has spade base edge with teeth for
improved penetration.

Bank Forming (BF)

Similar to ditch clearing buckets, but with flat floor to help

in finishing jobs (highway, industrial, railway
embankments). They will not accept teeth or sidecutters.

Noncurrent Balderson Buckets

Standard Duty (SD)

General purpose buckets for trenching or excavating.

Suitable for most soil conditions where moderate impact
and abrasion conditions are encountered. They include
adapters and long tips. They accept Cat sidecutters. The
300 series buckets include adjuster groups. They are
straight sided with bottom wear plates.

Excavators — PSK/GET 7/16/18, 11(42 PM

How to identify tip or adapter family?

Place a tape measure across the back of the tip at midpoint

of the side walls.

Example: 3.0" (76.20 mm) measure is J300 family

Example: 3.5" (88.90 mm) measure is J350 family
Example: 5.5" (139.70 mm) measure is J550 family

The majority of the time, the second to last and the third to
last locations in the part number identify the "J" size.

Adapters

The following two types of adapters are used on Cat base edges. Note that most base edges have the adapters
welded in place when they are made at the factory (called edge assemblies). In many cases, the edge
assembly is complete with all adapters. Where indicated, only the center adapters are welded on and the
corner adapters must be ordered separately.

Two-Strap Weld-On Adapters

Available on all Caterpillar Hydraulic Excavators. Welded to the cutting
edge on both sides for strength and impact resistance.

Bolt-On Adapters
Available on Caterpillar 215 Clamshell bucket cutting edges in a two-bolt
single-strap design.

J450/J460 UPDATE

Though similar in appearance, there is a major difference between the J450 and new J460 families. The J460
size is not an increase in width from 4.50" to 4.60". The new J460 parts provide improved retention capabilities
by increasing the pin size from 19.05 mm to 23.81 mm in diameter and the adapter pin bore from 21 mm to 25
mm. The retainer also increased in size. The tips for both the J450 and J460 adapters, however, are the same.
Customers and dealers should be aware that either the J450 or J460 adapters could be on 988/235 buckets and
any other buckets with upsized J450/J460 adapters. Current production buckets are using J460 adapters
exclusively.

The attached list identifies the J450 adapter part numbers along with the J460.

Excavators — PSK/GET 7/16/18, 11(42 PM

Sidecutters as attachments on excavator backhoe buckets provide flexibility to match varying soil conditions.

Blade Type
Two styles of Blade Type Sidecutters are effective in average digging
conditions. Suitable for most soil conditions and provides a strong wear-
resistant cutting edge that helps protect the bucket sides.

Combination
For light to moderate digging conditions. The combination sidecutter
reduces cost by allowing for replacement of the worn extension blade
rather than replacing the more expensive base blade.

Tooth-Type
For tough digging conditions. It consists of replaceable tips pinned to side
mounted adapters. The adapter accepts all tips available for excavator
buckets.

Strike-Off
Protects bucket corners from wear. It affords better penetration and offers
an additional cutting edge surface due to the sharp half-arrow design. The
strike-off design provides protection for the sidecutter/bucket mating
surface allowing a used bucket to be fitted with any of the previously
discussed sidecutters.

Heavy Duty
For tough digging conditions. It has more wear material and
covers more of the sidebar for enhanced sidebar and bucket side
protection.

Sidebar Protector
For extreme digging conditions in high impact applications. Pin-on
for easy replacement; reversible for longer life. Two styles
available: one- & two-piece design. Dependent on bucket type.
