Basic Cal Module 1st Week

The document provides a lesson on the definition of derivative and its relationship to the slope of the tangent line. It defines the derivative as the limit of the difference quotient as h approaches 0. Examples are provided to illustrate calculating the derivative using the power rule and finding the equation of the tangent line given a point on a function. Students are assigned to read the reference material, answer practice problems, and submit a photo of their first quiz by certain deadlines.

Module
Subject: Basic Calculus
Subject Teacher: Genevee P. Resultay

Topic: Definition of Derivative

Learning Competency:
 The learner will be able to illustrate the tangent line to the graph of a function at a given
point.
 Apply the definition of the derivative of a function at a given number.
 Relate the derivatives of a function to the slope of the tangent line.
Date Covered: March16-20, 2020

Instruction:
1. Read the reference sent thru messenger from page 89-95. (Sibs Math connection in
the digital age)

Summary:
Tangent Line to the Graph of a Function at a Derivative of a Function with respect to
point x
f ( x  h)  f ( x )
m  lim
h f ( x  h)  f ( x )
h 0
f ' ( x )  lim
h 0 h

*The two equations are almost the same. It is because every time you get the derivative
of a function, you are actually determining the slope of the tangent line at point x=a.
dy
*derivative of function = f ' ( x ) (f prime of x) = dx (derivative of y with respect to x)

Example1:
Find the derivative of f ( x)  4 x  x .
2

Solution:
(one way)
Read example 2 solution on page 93.
(another way)
Using Power Rule of Differentiation: If f ( x)  x , where n is a real number, then
n

f ' ( x)  nx n1
f ( x)  4 x 2  x (We have n=2 in first term and n= invissible1 in the second term)

f ' ( x )  4( 2) x 21  (1) x 11

f ' ( x )  8 x1  1x 0 (any number raised to 0 is equal to 1)

f ' ( x )  8 x  1(1)
f ' ( x )  8 x  1 answer
Example2:
Find the derivative of f ( x)  5 x  1

Solution:
f ( x)  5 x  1

f ' ( x )  5(1) x 11  0 (the derivative of all constant is 0)

f ' ( x)  5

Example3:
Find the equation of the line, tangent to the graph of f ( x)  4 x  x at point(1,3).
2

Solution:
The derivative of the graph f ( x)  4 x  x is the same with its slope of the tangent line.
2

f ' ( x )  8 x  1 (Substitute x)(x=1 and y=3 by the given point 1,3)

f ' (1)  8(1)  1  7 =m

Using equation of the line ( y  mx  b )

3=7(1)+b
3=7+b
3-7=b
-4=b

Therefore, the equation of the line tangent to the graph is y  7 x  4 ( y  mx  b )

2. Answer the “Work it up” on page 95. Choose only 2. Write on a 1 whole sheet of paper
or on your yellow notebook.Copy and Answer.

3.Send a picture of your first quiz on my messenger (genevee paningbatan) until Monday
(March 23). Keep it and pass it on April 13,2020.

Study Well and God Bless you.
