HISTORY
Kanpur formerly known as Cawnpore, is a
large city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India.
The city is famous for its leather and textile
industries. It is the 12th most populous city in
India. Located on the west bank of the Ganges
River, it is a major trade and commercial
center in North India with the first woollen mill
of India, the British India
Corporation established here in 1876
by Alexander McRobert. The city is widely
regarded as "The Leather City of the World"
and is also nicknamed as "Manchester of
India".
Kanpur is blessed with a rich cultural heritage. Eminent poets
such as Bal Krishna Sharma have played a key role in
promoting this culture. Fair and festivals that are celebrated in
the city, also offer a glimpse of the culture of Kanpur. The
famous Ganga Fair is held for five days each year, attracting
people from all walks of life. Devotees play Holi and take a
Cultures & holy bath in the Ganges. Kanpur has played an important role
in the propagation of ‘Nautanki’, a theatre form. Cultural
events such as Ram Lila provide a platform to budding artists.
Languages Classical Indian dance and music forms are also very popular
in Kanpur. The food in Kanpur is inspired by Awadhi cuisine.
Khoya Laddu and Biryani are some of the famous delicacies .
Hindi is the official language of the state of Uttar Pradesh and it is
also the most widely spoken language in Kanpur. Urdu and Awadhi
are also spoken by a minority. Most of the educated professionals in
the city are well-versed in English.
Kanpur known as an Educational hub of UP. A public
engineering institution Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur is
in the city. It was one of the first Indian Institutes of
Technology established in 1959, created with the assistance of
Education a consortium of nine US research universities.

(GSVMMC or GSVM Medical College) is a state-run medical
college in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the biggest
medical college of the State.
Historical Places- Bithoor
Bithoor is a town in Kanpur District, 23.4
kilometres by road north of the centre of
Kanpur city, in Uttar Pradesh, India. Bithoor is
situated on the right bank of the Ganga, and is
the center of Hindu pilgrimage. According to
Hindu mythology, Bithoor is the birthplace of
Ram's sons Luv and Kush.Some of the most
significant moments of Hindu religion and
mythology are said to be created here, as
being the place of the forest-rendezvous of
Sita after Lord Rama left her, the birthplace of
Lav and Kush, the site where the Ramayana
was written. Bithoor is also the center for
Revolt of 1857 as Nana Sahib, a popular
freedom fighter who was based there. It was at
one time home to many of the rebellion's most
prominent participants including the Rani of
Jhansi, Lakshmi Bai.
Town Of Ghats
• The historic town of Bithoor, once famous by the
name of ‘Bavan Ghaton ki Nagari’, (city of 52
Ghats) is left with only 29 Gahts. The chief among
them being the Tuta Ghat, Patkapur Ghat,
Khanderao Ghat, Rishikul Ghat, Kalvari Ghat,
Hanuman Ghat, Chhappar Ghat, Bramhavarta
Ghat, Pandav Ghat, Jhansi Rani Ghat, Mahapatra
Ghat, Chhatta Ghat, Maharaj Peshwa Ghat etc.
Out of 29 Ghats, most beautiful is the Patthar Ghat
built by the Raja Tikaitrai. The other important ghat
of Bithoor is the Kalvari Ghat, where a large
Ganesh Temple built by the Peshwas exists. Other
notable sites at Bithoor are the Tripura Sundri
temple, Shivananda Ashram, Gyaneshwar
Mahadev temple, Janki temple, Pantha Devi
temple and Sri Gayatri Dham.
Other Tourist Place
• Kos Minar
During the Mughal Period, Sher shah Suri had
constructed a road and built a pillar to earmark the
distance called as Kos minar. The distance
between two pillars was 1 kos (3.2 km). Generally
the kos minar is of 3m height and area (paridhi)
with the top shaped like a shankh. This minar is
constructed with old bricks and lime plaster.
• The Kanpur Memorial Church
The Kanpur Memorial Church was built in 1875 in
honour of the British who lost their lives in the war
of 1857. The Church was designed by Walter
Granville, architect of east Bengal Railway
Famous Temples
• JK Mandir
JK Temple Kanpur houses the idols of Lord Krishna,
Radha, Lord Narayan, Goddess Laxmi, Lord Hanuman,
Lord Ardhanarishwar and Lord Narmadeshwar. The
temple was constructed by the Singhania family in
1960. The temple’s calm environment offers peace of
mind to those who are seeking for it.
• Dwarka Dhish Temple
Situated near Kamla Tower of Kanpur, this is one of
the few temples which piously follows all the rituals. It
has many visitors everyday coming to seek the
blessings of the Lord Krishna from around the city.
Famous Temples
• Jain Glass Temple
Jain Glass Kanpur temple holds its significance for both
religious and architectural importance. It is dedicated to
Lord Mahavir, another name of Lord Shiva and the other
twenty three Jain tirthankaras. The uniqueness of the
temple lies in the fact that the temple is made up of only
glass. It displays beautiful art work on glass and enamel.
The tourists get a visual treat as well and they get to learn
about the teachings of Jainism along with it.
• Mecca Masjid
Mecca masjid of Kanpur city is considered to be one of
the most famous and revered mosques of the city. This
mosque is ancient and is one of the living proofs of the
rich culture of Kanpur that was ruled by various dynasties.
The Masjid is open for Namaaz for Islamic people and
remains crowded with devotees every Fridays.
