Introduction
Slide bearings manufactured by ABB Zamech Marine are to be mounted in shaft line
assemblies on sea vessels of unlimited sailing region.'
Shaft line bearings delivered by ABB Zamech Marine are of two main types:

Design
The casing of a bearing consists of a housing [1] and a cover[2] connected together
by means of fixing bolts.
In the housing there is mounted a slide shell [3] lined with white metal. The other i.e.
upper shell [4] is mounted only in bearings of "G" type and it is placed on the cover.
Bearing shells are founded in the casing either on cylindrical surfaces or spherical
surfaces (the latter case is valid for an R design version).
In the crankcase of a bearing housing there are assembled oil cooling coils [9].
Bearings are lubricated in a hydrodynamic way. Inside the bearing casing there is
installed a lubricating ring [6] on a shaft. The ring rotates and takes oil that is collected
by a fender [7] in the upper part of a bearing. Then, oil is carried between shells and a
shaft via proper canals.
The bearing casing is sealed with labyrinth oil glands [5], a throwing ring [8] and a
profiled lubricating ring [6].
Bearing casing.
Both bearing elements Le. a casing and a cover are made of grey cast iron, nodular
cast iron or carbon cast iron. The choice of material depends on working conditions
and customer requirements.
Shells.
Slide shells are made of forged, stress relieved semi-finished products and are lined
with bearing metall83 ( SnSb11Cu6) .Thanks to degassing technology of a
base the bearing metal may adhere properly to the shells. White metal adhesion is
controled by ultrasonic tests.
Shells are founded in the casing either on cylindrical surface or - in case of an R type
bearings - on spherical surface, which allows self-acting maintenance of
parallelism between a shaft and a shell.
It is usually Shipyards that make a decision how to found the shells.
The hole in shells is made with H7 or C8 ,C9 tolerance depending on the
manufacturing tolerance of a shaft and bearing working conditions.
Shell lubrication.
Bearings are lubricated in a hydrodynamic way. The lubrication ring is of split type and
it is mounted tightly on a shaft with the aid of fixing bolts. The lubrication ring rotates
and delivers oil to the upper bearing part where an oil fender is located. The collected
oil is then directed between a shaft and shells via oil canals.
Oil flow in a bearing should be periodically checked through a view hole in a bearing
casing. If necessary, the position of an oil fender should be adjusted.

Oil cooling.
Bearing sealing.
Oil glands mounted on both sides of a casing prevent oil leakage. The oil glands have
a specifically formed edge that captures splashed oil and then, directs it again to the
crankcase.
An oil throwing ring is another element that seals a bearing. The ring is mounted on a
shaft close to an oil gland.
The combination of oil gland, lubricating oil ring and oil throwing ring guarantees
effective and non-contact bearing sealing.
Recommended oils.
Bearings may be lubricated with any non-foaming and long life oil. Oil viscosity should
, be determined by loading. In ordinary loading conditions there should be applied a
mineral oil that is an equivalent of VG 68 - 100 according to an ISO norm.
Transportation of bearings.
Bearings may be transported with general transport means. During transportation the
bearing casing and housing should be screwed together and oil gland should be .
mounted. The holes on both faces should be plugged so as not to damage or scratch
the shells. The lubricating oil ring and oil throwing ring should be transported in a
separate box. It is recommended that the pipe delivering water to a cooler should be
unscrewed during transportation.
Assembly recommendation.
Before mounting the bearing must be perfectly cleaned. While shaft line is aligned
pay special attention to protect a bottom shell from any damage or scratch when a
shaft is displaced and moved.
Shaft bearing position is strictly connected with shaft line static deformation and
bearing reaction calculations which are made by shipyard. The basis of proper
bearing montage is static deflection of a shaft and bearing reaction value which
should be achieved with accuracy +- 2 kN.
In practice special adjusting plates should be placed put under the bearing. These
plates should guarantee uniform pressures on the whole length of a shell bearing. The
value of pressure should be then according to reaction calculation for ship service
status. The shape of tin washers should b adapted to the surface of foundation feet.
Bearing feet must be firmly supported before foundation bolts are tightened.
Pay special attention to gaps between a shaft and a oil glands. The gaps must be
symmetric on total circumference.

- the position of a lubricating ring must be in accordance with the dimension A given
in the below table;
- clearance between an oil fender and a lubricating ring should be within 0,2 - 0,3
mm;
- use oil of viscosity VG 68 - 100 according to an ISO norm; the quantity of oil
necessary to fill the bearing is given in the below table;
- the demand of cooling water of max temperature. 36°C - see the table
After mounting the lubricated ring should be placed in a bearing as shown in the
sketch number 2.

Bearing exploitation.
- ensure constant flow of cooling water through coils in case oil temperature in a
bearing exceeds 50° C
- empty water from an oil cooler in case of long intervals in work and low
temperatures
