    ACADEMIC ADVICE

    FOR
    LINGUISTICS MINORS
    If you are planning to develop and declare a Minor in Linguistics, here are
    some possible combinations of Level II and Level III courses, based on
    career tracks/streams. MOST (but not all) Levels II courses require the
    three Level I Linguistics courses as pre-requisites – LING 1001, LING
    1002 and LING 1005. For example, the Discourse courses require one or
    two of these courses, but not all three, and the Patois and Gender courses
    require none.

    THE MINOR IN LINGUISTICS and RELATED CAREER TRACKS


    MINOR IN LINGUISTICS: ENGLISH LINGUISTICS
    English Language Teaching (ELT)/ English for Special Purposes (ESP)
    (Please refer to Ministry of Education document for complete details.)

    LING 2101 – Language Acquisition


    LING 2305 – Introduction to Educational Linguistics*
    LING 2402 – Structure of the English Language*
    LING 2403 – Change and Development in the English Language
    LING 2404 – Structure and Meaning in Literary Discourse or
    LING 2702 – Point-of-View and Meaning in Literary Discourse
    LING 3101 – Applied Linguistics
    LING 3202 – Creole Linguistics
    (* compulsory )

    MINOR IN LINGUISTICS: LANGUAGE LEARNING AND LANGUAGE


    AWARENESS (Linguistics)
    Modern Languages – Français Langue Etrangère (FLE), Español como Lengua
    Extranjera (ELE), and Português como Língua Estrangeira (PLE)

    LING 2101 – Language Acquisition


    LING 2302 – Sociolinguistics
    LING 2305 – Introduction to Educational Linguistics
    LING 3101 – Applied Linguistics
    LING 3201 – Caribbean Dialectology

    A Level II course in Phonology or Syntax or both would also be beneficial. LING


    2801 and 2802 – French-lexicon Creole – Patois (NO pre-requisites) is particularly
    useful for French Majors. LING 2803 – Change and Development of Selected
    European Languages, with a focus on Romance Languages will be offered. Other
    Linguistics courses offered in the LLE programme are relevant for teachers in the
    Modern Languages.
