Structure and Written Expressions is the second part tested in the TOEFL exam.

In
this section, it is necessary to understand your competence or ability in terms of Grammar in
English. The questions recommended in this voice are 40 questions with a given duration of
30 minutes.

Structure
In the Structure section, the questions are given in the form of flowing through
incomplete sentence participants from then leaving to choose the right word or phrase to
complete the sentence.

General Strategies:
1. Study the sentence
Determine what is needed to complete the sentence correctly.
2. Study each answer based on how well it completes the sentence
Eliminate answers that do not complete the sentence correctly.
3. Do not try to eliminate incorrect answers by looking only at the answers
The incorrect answers are generally incorrect only when used to complete the sentence.
4. Never leave any answers blank
5. Do not spend too much time on the Structure questions
Be sure to leave adequate time for the Written Expression questions.
6.Questions in Structure have some patterns which are tested regularly.
7. Time is essential here.

Directions : Question 1-15 are incomplete sentences. Beneath each sentence you will see for
words or phrases, marked (A), (B), (C) and (D). You are to choose one word or phrase that
best complete the sentence.

1. I had finished cleaning the house when my friends arrived. this sentence means that....
A. We were cleaning the house together
B. My friends did not see me cleaning the house
C. My friends came before i started cleaning the house
D. I stopped cleaning the house after my friends had come

Kalimat I had finished cleaning the house when my friends arrived dapat diartikan:
Saya telah selesai membersihkan rumah ketika teman-teman saya telah datang.
 Artinya teman-teman subjek tidak melihatnya membersihkan rumah. Jawaban yang
tepat adalah : My friends did not see me cleaning the house.

2. Dedi : "Arya, how do you inspec in our new criminals?"

   Arya  :" I had the special agent......."

Answer : A
Had (bentuk past dari have) adalah salah satu causative verb. Have diikuti oleh bare
infinitive (V1). jadi jawaban yang tepat untuk kalimat tersebut adalah investigate

C. Must
D. May

Answer : C
Kalimat tersebut dapat dilengkapi dengan ungkapan "keharusan". Modal yang tepat untuk
kalimat tersebut adalah must (harus)

4. The new emploees are furious .. the news about their delayed salary.
A. Receiving
B. Received
C. To receive
D. Receive

Answer : A
Kalimat tersebut menggunakan bentuk present. Kalimat tersebut dapat menggunakan
adjective phrase yang merupakan reduksi dari adjective clause yang menggunakan when.
The new employees are furious (when they are) receiving  the news about their delayed
salar. When they are bisa dihilangkan sehingga kalimat yang dihasilkan adalah "the new
emploees are furious receiving the news about their delayed salary"

5. Airlangga University has a well-respected medical school.

A. As university
B. As public university
C. As the university
D. As a public university

Answer : D
Prepositional phrase  yang tepat untuk melengkapi kalimat tersebut adalah as a public
university yang berarti sebagai universitas publik.
6. Anton : What’s the best way to learn speak English?
Ferry  : … It’s faster and more applicable than just taking regular English course.
 A. Why don’t you practice a lot?
B.  Let’s try do a lot of exercises
C.  You’d better go to the origin countries of the language
D.  How about learning new vocabulary from the dictionary?
Pembahasan : 
Anton bertanya pada Ferry perihal bagaimana caranya untuk belajar bahasa Inggris. Ferry
memberikan jawaban yang tepat untuk belajar bahasa Inggris dengan cepat dan mudah
diterapkan. Dari pilihan jawaban yang terdapat pada soal, maka yang paling “aplicable”
adalah belajar vocabulary dari kamus.

Pembahasan :
Dari dialog diatas, respon dari Hendro adalah negatif dan diperkuat dengan
pernyataannya tentang dimana Dian akan menaruh buku- bukunya? Maka jawaban yang
tepat berdasarkan konteks diatas adalah Dian bertanya apakah hendro ingin membeli
beberapa buku.

10. Mother : Where shall we go this holiday?

Daughter : I’d like to go to New York, mom. But it’s really expensive.
Mother : If we go there, …. How about going to Bali?

Pembahasan : 
Dalam dialog diatas, Ibu bertanya pada anak perempuannya kemana mereka akan pergi
pada liburan ini. Dan anak menjawab ingin pergi ke New York, tetapi terlalu mahal. Si
Ibu menyatakan dengan bentuk If Clause, “ If we go there, …, isian yang tepat berdasar
konteks adalah “we can’t stay there more than 3 days.” 
Answer : B

Written Expressions
Written Expressions, divergent flow in the form of sentences in several parts that
are marked (underlined). In the salsa the diaphragm is spread by the test participant can
determine which chart is not correct in the sentence.

General Strategies:
1. Do not pay attention to the directions (because they are all the same)
2. Look at the underlined word or groups of words
Spot which of the four answer choices is not correct
 3. If you have been unable to find the error by looking only at the four underlined
expressions, then read the complete sentence.
Pay attention that a sentence must have a subject and a verb (predicate).
4. Questions in Written Expression have some patterns which are tested regularly.
5. Time is essential.
6. Never leave any answers blank.

Karena ada kata “both”, maka seharusnya kata kerja yang mengikuti adalah lebih dari
satu dan menggunakan kata “and” sehingga jawaban yang perlu diperbaiki adalah (D),
dari “or” menjadi “and”.

8. Cambodia’s (A) top court is to hear the case as early (B) the start (C) of next winter
(D).
Untuk komparasi, kata (B) kurang lengkap karena seharusnya menggunakan frasa “as
early as”, bukan hanya “as early”.

9. Energy research, medicinal (A), tourism, and copper and molybdenum mining (B) are
important to (C) the economy (D) of Butte, Montana.
Dari daftar kata benda atau noun yang ada dalam kalimat di atas, seharusnya kata
yang digunakan adalah “medicine” yaitu kata benda yang tepat bukan kata sifat
seperti “medicinal”. Dengan demikian jawaban yang perlu diperbaiki adalah (A).

10. Liberty of speech (A) is one of the (B) pillars of (C) Western democracy (D).
Frasa “liberty of speech” kurang tepat karena yang benar adalah “freedom of speech”
sehingga jawaban yang perlu diperbaiki adalah (A).
