Fault analysis of three phase alternator

Sequence Impedance
Aim: To measure the following sequence impedance of alternator

1)positive sequence impedance

2) negative sequence impedance

3) zero sequence impedance

Apparatus Required:

S.No Item Type Range Quantity

1 Transformer 3-Phase 230/230v, 1
2KVA
2 Voltmeter Digital (0-600)V 1
3 Ammeter Digital (0-10)A 1
4 Variac 3-Phase (0-440)V 1
5 Connecting Wires Needed

Measurement of Positive sequence impedance :

Procedure:
1. The machine should be in idle
2. Alternator field winding shorted through in ammeter
3. Apply single phase voltage to A1,B1 terminals of star connected alternator
4. Switch ON the single phase ac supply and rotate the alternator shaft by manually and
note down the ammeter and voltmeter reading in table- keep the shaft position at the
position of maximum field current value
5. The single phase voltage input to alternator terminal ‘A1&B1’ is assumed as ‘X1’
6. Repeat the above procedure with single phase ac input to alternator terminal B1 &C1 is
assumed as ‘X2’
7. Repeat the above procedure with single phase ac input to alternator terminal C1 &A1 is
assumed as ‘X3’

X1=V/2I1

X2=V/2I2

X3=V/2I3

K=(X1+X2+X3)/3

Measurement of Negative sequence impedance:

1. Connection are made ap per the above diagram

a) Field winding should be shorted through an ammeter
b) Alternator should be connected in star connection
c) Short any two phase of alternator. Apply single phase voltage to short phases(A1or B1)
and open phase(C1)
2. Run the alternator as its rated speed
3. Note down the readings and tabulate

Measurement of Zero sequence impedance:

1. Connection are made ap per the above diagram

a) Field winding should be shorted
b) Connect all three phase of the armature winding in series and apply a single phase
variable voltage.

2. Run the alternator as its rated speed
