Statement of Purpose

“Whatever you vividly imagine, ardently desire, sincerely believe, and

enthusiastically act upon… must inevitably come to pass!”
~ Paul J. Meyer

These inspirational words from one of the great thinkers of our time have
been the motto for the greater part of my academic career. I have personally
experienced the truth in these words, as I progressed through my academic career
from school to a junior college and then to University Institute of Chemical
Technology. I am amazed by the sheer versatility of chemical engineering – a
combination of the elegance of the physical sciences, the rigidity of mathematics
and the brute force of experimentation. These qualities of the subject, coupled with
my professional ambition of pursuing a career in research, have motivated me to
apply for graduate studies in chemical engineering.

I have always maintained an admirable academic record. During the

Secondary School Certificate (S.S.C.) examinations I secured 87.60% and stood 21 st
in Kolhapur Divisional Board among some 200,000 students. I repeated the feat
with another superlative performance in the Higher Secondary School Certificate
(H.S.S.C.) examinations where I secured 99.33% in Physics, Chemistry and
Mathematics group and stood 1 st in my college and 2nd in the common engineering
list among 90,000 students in the Kolhapur Divisional Board. My strong inclination
towards Mathematics and Chemistry, and my superior academic credentials
propelled me to pursue the field engineering at the University Department of
Chemical Technology (U.D.C.T.), recently renamed as University Institute Chemical
Technology (U.I.C.T.), the premier institution for Chemical Engineering in Asia.

At U.I.C.T. I have been introduced to the vast and diverse world of

Chemical Engineering. The academic atmosphere seemed to be a perfect abode for
my questioning and explorative mind. Especially so the Chemical Engineering
Laboratory, a beautifully orchestrated, yet elegantly simple showcase of the
fundamental principles; and the Design aspects, which tested the assimilation of
four years of instruction in various subjects. This, along with my industrial
Training at Lubrizol India Private Ltd., a subsidiary of Lubrizol, USA, and my
Undergraduate Research Project in National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, has
given me a problem-solving approach which is indispensable for a researcher.

My two-month undergraduate research project at the National Chemical

Laboratory (NCL), Pune gave me a first hand experience of cutting-edge
research. The work I carried out with Dr. Ravi Kumar (Senior Scientist) on
“Coherent Structure Determination by Wavelet Analysis from Long Time Series
Analysis” was presented at the national-level technical symposium, Prodigy-2002 at
U.I.C.T. During the course of this project, I have mastered various modeling and
simulation skills, analytical and data interpretation techniques. Apart from giving
me an insight into a fascinating field, it has served to orient me towards the
quintessential research temperament.

Environmental and Hazardous Waste treatment is an area that has
captivated me with its myriad of advantages. I am particularly concerned with the
safety, health, and environmental aspects of process manufacturing, pollution
prevention, energy savings and wastewater minimization. This topic is very close to
my heart, since I have presented my seminar on “Treatment of Dairy Wastewater”
with the supervision of Mrs. K.V. Marathe, this year at U.I.C.T. Impetus for this
topic was also triggered when I was awarded first prize for the Best Paper
Presentation on “Fuel Cell- A Frontier in Energy Management” in International
Level Technical Symposium, Chemcon-2001. In Fuel Cells, I am specifically
interested in the development of proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells,
designing of fuel cells stacks. I am interested in Materials for I strongly believe that
developing application-specific materials is need of the day. Personally I have kept
myself well read in this field and carried out literature survey on Carbon
Nanotubes. The potential applications that nanotubes chemistry has in the
electronic industry and the biomedical industry (targeted drug delivery systems) has
thoroughly impressed upon me the impact of materials processing in the years to
come. I would therefore like to work on nanoscale composites, chemical vapor
deposition, electrodeposited ultrathin films and sol gel processes. Apart from the
above, I am keenly interested in Bioprocessing and novel Separation processes.
My interest in this field took shape during our biological sciences course, where we
were introduced to cell-cultures, bio-reactor design, biosensors and enzymatic
catalysis. At this point, I must state that although this is my primary area of
interest, I am equally adept at learning and adapting myself to any new field. I
would quite relish the opportunity of exploring new vistas in chemical engineering.

An extremely distinguished faculty, a milieu replete with academic activity,

and a graduate program, with focus on all my main research interests; which
blends high quality course work and research facilities at the cutting edge of every
sub-field are the factors which have motivated me to choose the Washington State
University for graduate studies. It is my keen desire to participate in pioneering
research efforts being carried out at WSU.

After my graduate studies, I see myself as a professional engaged in cutting-

edge research, either as a teaching faculty member, or in an R&D division in the
industry. I am aware that graduate study calls for a high degree of commitment,
diligence, innovation and sound fundamentals in chemical engineering and I am
confident that with my unwavering dedication and persistence, I shall be able to
face all posed challenges. I sincerely hope to fulfill my ambition of carrying out
original research work and in the process contribute to the research endeavors at
your university, making it a mutually rewarding experience.

In conclusion, I would like to say that personal achievement of any kind must
arise out of positive contribution to one’s community. It is with this intention, and
none other, that I wish to pursue graduate study at the Washington State
University to perform research of the highest quality, contributing to the field of
chemical engineering and to a better tomorrow.
