W TO CREATE YOUR FIRST OUTDOOR JOURNEY

ating an oudoor journey to use as part of The Journey Method

es four simple steps:

Think of a journey from A → B that you know well.

Close your eyes and travel the journey in your mind.

As you do, pick out landmarks, places and features that might

make good stations for storing mental images.

Write those stations in order as a list to the left.

, You'll notice the table to the left has 52 spaces but don't panic!

urney with just 10 stations should be more than enough for your
t memory journey (52 is just the number you'd need to memorise
deck of cards with simple images, or two with complex images.)

en you're done, rehearse the route in your mind. Try it forwards

kwards and from the middle in both directions until you feel
fident you can navigate it and its stations quickly and easily.

ED AN EXAMPLE?

e's my journey from my house to the local general store:

6. Drive way of spooky house

Garage next to gate 7. Furniture shop

Gate out of front garden 8. Alcohol shop

Lane to main road 9. Alleyway

Bank on corner 10. ATM in front of shop

r first journey doesn't need to be any more complicated. But as

grow in confidence feel free to experiment with longer routes.

acing a special marker (like a statue of a golden hand) at every

h marker, and another at the half-way point of a journey will help

u take shortcuts to specific points in your journey.

u may find it helpful to start a memory journey diary to keep

ck of and review your growing list of memory journeys.

hen it makes sense, try to relate the location of the journey to

e information you're trying to memorise. E.g., for sports data,

e a stadium. For history, use a relevant historical site.

u'll find it helpful to have a mix of both indoor and outdoor

urneys to choose from. Try experimenting with what kinds of

tings work best with what kinds of memory tasks!

milar to creating outdoor journeys but with a few extra steps:

Think of a building you know well (this can be anywhere, your

home, school, office, favourtie restaurant, church - anywhere!)

Sketch the rough layout of the building on a piece of paper.

Plan a route through the rooms of the building (see tips below).
Break the rooms into features to create stations if needed.

Close your eyes and travel your planned route.

Write the rooms and room-features in order as a list to the left.

e are some route drawing tips you'll find helpful:

Don't cross your own path (try to keep the route linear)

t's OK to move through walls (this makes tip 1 easier!)

Always try to finish at an exit (this lets you expand your route
out of the building if you have to.

en you're done, rehearse the route in your mind. Try it forwards

kwards and from the middle in both directions until you feel

INSTRUCTIONS

Ok, this one's pretty niche. But if you want to commit

lists of binary numbers or TRUE/FALSE outcomes

(e.g., coin tosses) to memory (or communicate with

the machine overlords of our future) then the binary

numbers and associated characters to the left may

come in handy (you never know!).

As with the other bonus systems, this one should

populate itself automagically from your Dominic

System as you complete it!
